_EVENING STAR._ DOUBLE SHEET. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page, ” WASHINGTON OITY: SATUBDAY......... We are compelled again to print a double sheet, to relieve the pressure upon our columns. | It be seen that the holiday season is open- ing early, and advertisers are already begin- ning td call the attention of purchasers to at- tractive wares in the holiday line. We propose } to give an attractive position and descriptive reference to our holiday advertisers this year, snd those who desire to do a heavy Christmas business will do well to be soon in the field with their announcements. “ The early bird,” &c. = soe ‘The silly story of a coolness between the gor- ernments of Europe and this country, which we had occasion to deny a day or two since, is repeated in a modifled form in one of the New York papers of yesterday. The whole thing is the merest moonshine, and had its origin in a heated imagination or troubled conscience. It is not impossible that there have been times when the intercourse between the representa- tive of the Czar and the appropriate branches of this government was not as frequent or cor- dial as at others, but if so, it will be found, we apprehend, that such state of facts was in no wise connected with the Eastern question or the ‘nternational reiations of the two countries, but was baced entirely on considerations of a per- sonal character. Indeed, the gossips had it at one time that there was likely to be a reorgani- zation of the Muscovite embassy here, but had st occurred no political significance would have beew attached to it. ———~<2-___ ‘The Washington and Georgetown Railroad Company have found an organ in the George- town Courier, and the Paving Commissioners are berated soundly in that paper for requiring the company to pave their tracks to correspond with the rest of the street. Mayor Emery and General Michler are rapped over the knuckles, and ‘‘as for the opinien of Obristopher Colum- bus Americus Vespucius Delano, the new Sec- retary of the Interior, who forms part of the Commission tor paving the Avenue, very few of the resident population can reasonably be expected to care over-much,” says the Courier. The railroad company, we take it, will not gain much by this sort of vilitication of public officers charged with the duty of executing the 1 requiring Pennsylvania avenue to be Paved in “the best and most substantial manner.’ And it is @ pretty good joke that these Chat- bam-street gentlemen, who omit no op; to bleed the people of the District, should un- dertake to speak for “the resident Population.” —— os A Noss Cuantry—Elsewhere in to-day’s paper will be found the charter for an inetitu- tion which must commend itself to the liberal- ity of every citizen of the District of Columbia. We refer to the proposed hospital for the treat- ment of the medical and surgical diseases of ebildren.. By reference to the terms of the charter it will be seen that the distinctively commendable features of this institution are:— Ist, Freedom from sectarian or denominational intluence; 2d, Open to the reception of all sick children; 34, Relying on the voluntary contri- butions of the commynity for support; 4th, Es- tablishing classes of disease, and consequently securing greater professional attainment in each; Sth, The services of al! physicians being gratuitgus ‘The list of corporators, it will be observed, includes the names of some of our best eitizens, of both sexes, and the suecess and permanence of the establishment should be assured from the start. —_—_-<ee--__ It must make the frugal and decently disposed stockholders in the Washington and Georgetown railroad company feel very sick to see the man- ner in which their money is wasted by the present management in continuing to lay down the for- bidden cobble stone nuisance between the tracks on Pennsylvania avenue, when it can remain there for so short atime. Had the same amount of effort and means been expended to procure the required wood pavement at once, it would baye been true economy, and President Kiker swould De entitled to and receiye at the same time the thanks of the pubiic and those of the right-minded stockholders. As it is, the cost of the disgraceful work now going on under his direction must very soon be a dead loss, and the innocent owners of stock made to suffer to that extent; for the change is bound to be made sooner or later. Meantime the company is sink- ‘ng deeper and deeper in public contemptevery day. —_—_____-«ee-- —— THz Lats Fieative ty France-—Elsewhere will be found an important cable telegram from Lendon summing up the results of the recent fighting in France, from which it appears that the army of the Loire was successful in piereing the Prussian line in several places, bat that Gen. Ducrot was repulsed in his sortie trom Paris, hence no junction of the French forces was effected. The situation in Europe is such tbat great anxiety is felt hereto learn further particulars of recent and contemporaneous events; and the announcement from New York that the accumulation of dispatches there for Europe is to be cleared off, before we can re- ceive apy telegrams from the other side is ag- gravating, and gives rise in some quarters to the belief that the delay is from some causes not specitied. The Senatorial question in New Jersey bids fair to be badly complicated before it is dis- posed of. In view of Senator Cattell’s bad health, it bas been understood for some time that be would not be a candidate for re-elec- tion, and other combinations were made accord- but recently he bas improved in strength, and is again prominently brought forward, and the situation is consequently somewhat 2mbar- rassing. Itseems to be conceded that if Mr. Cattell’s health is sufficiently restored, his chances are best, and that after him Mr. Fre- li pghuysen i is the most formidable candidate. Some democratic paper in Maine claimed, recently, that the result of the election showed that Mr. Blaine’s popularity was ‘‘waning,” but the Augusta Journal shows that at that election be ran nearly 20 ahead of the liepublican State ticket in hie district. — +s0e- ‘The great anxiety in official and | diplomatic circles to-day to hear from Europe, shows how seriously the loss of our communication by cable with the Old Worid would be felt. -s0e- Since her betrothal to the Marquis, the Prin- cess Louise of England is understood to be the historical ‘maiden all forlorn.” Tax GovenwMentT Suit Against Jay Cooxe & Co.—The tostimony in the suit brought against , Jay Cooke & Co. for the re- covery of the value of several thousand dollar” worth of counterfeit seven-thirty bonds, which were sold at the Sub-Treasar, ded betore Judge pat of Destrict Court, Tar Kwa ” St. 1987S 0} “Mpeveen — or 3 Carsrm awn Tax Working Men's Unto one o!
