EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the Distriet ~ WASHINGTON CITY: SDAY November 15, 1970. To Advertisers, Im consequence of the great pressure upon our columns, and in order to properly accom- rcéate our advertising patrons, and at the -ame time give the news of the day with oar completeness, we shal! publis SUNDER, a Dornie or eight-page edition of Tae Stax, Saturday until after the holidays. As that special issue will contain a large extra amount of literary, agricultural and miscella- ‘s reading matter, it will ha: wn unusually wide circulation, both at home and by tra: | mission through the mails, and bence will be a particularly desirable medium for commani- cation between business men and the general public. Advertisements intended for the Satarday edition may be sent in at any time. — One Instance on Record where Adver- ising did not Pay. We have great faith in the efficacy of adver- tising, but we are afraid that even the libsral expenditure of the railroad company in that | line for the last week will fail to relieve them of the odium they have incurred by refusing to pave their tracks on the Avente. The same “mount of money would have gone a good deal farther im doing the work than in excusing them for not doing it. The “arguments” presented by them are— Ist. That the cobble stone they are now lay- ing is “a splendid pavement,” and “needs bat to be seen to be appreciate:t Just so. 2d. That wood pavement “is ruinous to the feet of horses,” and that “horses cannot get a footing on the wood pavement.” [The experi- ments of McNeil, Fisher, aud other eminent engineers. have shown the vast saving in horse- Mesh, horse-shoes, and carriage-tires by the use of wood pavements over stone; the wood pavement, by its superior elasticity, causing less percussion and abrasion. Dr. Ure, an aus thority who will not be questioned, estimates (see bis Mechanical Dictionary for 117) the saving in the life of horses used upon wood and stone to be in favor of wood in the proportion et 5to 2. The fact that horse railroad companies are required to pave their tracks with wood on all leading streets inother cities where wood | pavements are used, shows that it is no hardship torequire the same of them here; and at the same time it shows the absurdity of the claim | that horses cannot draw on wood pavements.) sd. That the cobblestone, “20 far from being ® blot on the street, will be favorable to the ap- pearance of the Avenue—especially as the com- pany Aare the reputation of keeping their track swept clean.” (Italiesours. No levity.) ‘th. “The wood pavement will take general travel from the railroad track, and thus enable the cars to make better time.” (They make excellent time pow—especially when transfer passengers are in sight ) Sth. “The Washington people have no right to complain how the road. is run, so long as they didn’t build it.” (Yes, if they support it.] 6th. The editor of Taz Stag has been a di- rector of the road and ‘‘his friends” have done this anJ that and the other in the way of water- ing stock, issuing bonds and indating prices by whieb ye that are dark and tricks that are vain,” they bumbugged and bamboozled those untiedged innocents, those lambs of the morn- ing, those sucklings without guile, the novices of Chatham street and Wall street, inducing “their beguiled innocent parchasers to give $15 = share for $50 stock.” (Now, we do not mean that the railroad com. pany shall escape from the paving issue by any cuttlg-fieh strategy of this sort. We have no interest whatever, and the public have as little, im the squabbles for supremacy among the Northern stockholders of the road, and their criminations and recriminations as to the past and present mavagement. It is sufficient to say that it has always been owned and managed by the Northern interests. But should any persons have the curiosity to follow up this vein of in- quiry it will probably be found that if any stock was worked off at 75 per share at a large profit on “innocent purchasera,” the operator im the transaction will be discovered not a thou- sand miles trom the pawnbroker's establish- ment of Henry Hart, Chatham street, New York, the said Hart being the present vice pres- ident of the road, and the individual who dic- tates its management, including its refasal to pave its share of the Avenue. It will be found, too, probably, that if any watering of stock or issuing of bonds was done at any time the chief cook and bottlewasher in the transaction was Director Henry Hart, now Vice President Hart, and the real manager of the company’s wires.) ih. One of the stockholders of Tae Stag aid” to have an interest in wood pavements that would ‘‘be benefitted by the addition to the wooden pavement of Pennsylvania avenac,’ hence, &e. {Another piece of cuttle-fish strate- ay. Tocharge interested motives upon an assail- ant is usually the resort of a defendant in a par- ticularly tight place. We have no interest in wood pavements to the extent of a dollar, dime, cent, or mil, and no man interested in wood pave- ments bas ever suggested alineor syllable of aught we have written in regard to wood pavement», or the selfish course of the railroad company, But if we were in this wooden line we cannot for the life of us see what benctit we should get by “coercing,” the company to pave their tracks, since the company is allowed by the law to do the work itself—always providing that they do pace them and not relay them with the abomninable cobblestone. | Sth. Because the Connecticut avenue railroad has not been built, therefore the impecuntous and no account people of Washington would never have built the Avenue railroad, and can never be sufficiently grateful to the disinter- ested gentlemen of Chatham street who run it at a heavy loss to themselves solely for the good of the people. (Sympathy of the public respect- fully solicited for the disinterested gentlemen et Chatham street who invest their money in our railroads and run them for nothing.) 9th. “Noone with asoul as capacious as an oyster can quibble abeut a sum eo paltry as siz cents @ pamenger.” [Italics not ours. Public indignation respectfully solicited against the oyster-souled people who quibble about paltry sixpences.) 10th. “ That no pavement is as good as stone, and in the opinion of the deponent none other ‘than stone should be used between the tracks of borse railroads operated by animal power,” the deponent being Robert Squires, premdent of the Third Avenue Railroad Company, of New York, and the stockholders of that com- pany owning the stock of the Washington and Georgetown Railroad Company. Thas the en- dorsement in this case is just about the same as if the avenue railroad line should endorse the views of the 7th street railroad line, or vice versa. —— And—yes—some railroad man out in Mem- pis bas been found to advise the company to stick to their cobble stone. They mean to. This is the sum and substance of the com Pany's defence. It is of the flimsiest descrip tion and simply serves to show that they begin to appreciate that a defence is needed. The fact that the press and pablic of the city with entire unanimity have decided against them. Sipe pert connaeaton for the interests of public, and proper sympathy with measures of public improvement necessary for the growth and prosperity of the city.
