EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District CROSBY 5S. NOYES. +. Editor. Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON OITY: THURSDAY... -October 27, 1870. ‘There is nothing new in regard to the Cor- missionership of Internal Revenue, except that General Pleasanton, of New York, is now re- garded by shrewd judges as the coming ma: Additional weight is given to this view by the argument that New York, having no represent- | ative in the Cabinet, is entitled, by reason of her weaith, population and commanding posi- tion, to this place, which, if not equal to a se: in the Cabinet in point of honor and dignity, is | hardly less desirable on the score of importan and responsibility. grounds are urged for the appoimt nent of Mr. Douglass, in behalf of the State of Peunsylva- nia, d bis friends exprers the belief that he will yet receivethe appointment. Mr. Kichard- son, of Massachusetts, and General Cowen, of Obno, are also still considered as having a fair show,—tbe former as the favorite of Secretary Boutwell, and the latter on general grounds; bat the geographical objection, or rather the fact that their States are now represented im the Cabinet, is urged against them by their oppo- nents. Whether this will have weight in the end remains to be seen, but it is not believed that the President will frefuse the position to the best man,or the one he considers best, on grounds so frivolous. Still, as stated above, all things considered, General Pleasanton js re- garded as just now having the chances in bix favor. +s0e- We have a speck of war on the home horizon. ‘The New York democracy take in high ds adgeon the fact of the government sending troops there to enforee the execution of law passed by Congress for ensuring the purity of the elections ‘There is to be a great mass meeting of the democracy in New York to-night, at which it is expected the government will be pretty roundly berated, and possibly there wil! be some foolish talk of resisting the United Stites troops. At apy rate the head-lines and inflammatory edi- torials of some of the democratic papers would seem intended for that mischievous end. A* we understand it, the troops are not sent there with the idea of making themselves offen- sive m the way of menace, but to be held in reserve in the vicinity of the city in case their presence should be necessary to enforce the law, threats having been loudly made that its en- forcement would be resisted. But that their Presence then in any shape will give great offence is quite evident, and we judge that = efiect will be to imerease the Jemocratic ma- jority in the city rather Raneteretes. ~ +20e- ‘THe STaR AND THE Reeves = some days a controversy of a personal character has been carried on between the Republican and ‘Tae Star, which has probably net been edity- ing to the readers of either paper, and which seems to be about a8 profitless as somuch mud- Hinging. We bave neither the taste, time, or space for ‘he prosecution of @ gutter wariare of this sort, and propose to stop it just here. ‘The readers of the two papers, respectively, can settle for them- selves “who begin’d the war” and who has had the best of the fight Probably their verdict will be that “honors are easy” and not much to brag of on either side. ‘The annual election for members of tae tirst branch of the Baltimore city council took place yesterday. There being no republican opposi- ‘ton ticket, the vote east was very lightexcept in the hve wards in which there were independent candidates. All the regularly nominated demo- cratic candidates were elected. The total vote cast for them was 8,782, and the vote cast for the independent candidates was 1,430. Total vote cast in the city #,212. The total vote cast at the last municipal election, in 140, was 18,570, being 8,658 more than at the Present election. The total republican vote last year wees, 120. There are about 48,00 voters regis- tered in the city. ‘There was a marked decline in the prices of coal at the great auction sale held in New York yesterday, as compared with those obtained at the last montaly sale, the average falling otf being about 60 cents per ton. Ninety thousand tons were put upon the market. and though every effort was made to force up the prices, great sluggishness was exhibited throughout, and it is not believed there will be any material advance hereafter. s2e0e- - A New York gunsmith has been arrested for Substantially the same}, bern causing the death of a burglar by means of a Weapon fixed to explode on the opening of a window, and the question fs raised whether the jaw permits the setting of deadly man traps even for the purposes of defence and protection. | ‘The law of public opinion will be apt to sustain the deed, <.se-—__ ‘The stern of the wrecked steamer Cambria bas drifted ashore at Islay, Scotland.
