EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District "CROSBY 8. NOYES......Rattor. WASHINGTON OITY: TUESDA Y..1000..-----.Oetober 25, 1970. Unele Gideon's Galaxy Romance. The Galery is an excellent magazine of its kind, lively and sensational, and all its writers are of the class who know how to spice an arti- cle or a story to suit the market. And so, when it was announced that the venerable Gideon Welles bad written a piece for the Galary, and , th. it was actually to be printed, its readers began to think that their favorite magazine had | At | ae fallen into its dotage. But the publishers knew what they were | In about, for the “piece” written by the venerable Gideon proved to be a frisky assault upon bis cabinet colleague, Secretary Seward; all about the abortive effort to relieve Fort Sumter. The Ancient Mariner of the Navy Department, while hibernating in his Connecticut home, has evidently been sucking bis paws in a very dis- satistied mood over figare he made in the Sumter affair, and the mammer in which he was ignored by the diplomatic Seward. He charges, im the Galazy, that Seward spoiled the Sumter expedition by indacing the President to detach the steamer Powhatan from it to go to the relief of Fort Pickens, and all “unbeknownst” to him the aforesaid Welles. It seems, however, that Welles was considered by his colleagues rather a garrulous old soul, and his department somewhat leaky, and that was the reason the Pickens expedition was kept @ secret from him. But as regards the inner history of the affair, the Venerable Mariner, with all his diaries and data, would seem to be a good deal in the fog, and he falls into a number of serious mistakes. The communication of (en. Montgomery C. Meigs, which appears elsewhere, supplies the necessary links in Uncle Gideon's narrative, corrects his blunders and misconceptions, and furnishes a most interesting and important his- torical contribution. Rough on Logan. The great champion of the capital-moving movement bas been Gen. John A. Logan. in season, and out ‘of season, General John has pounded away at the removal business, and un- doubtedly had reason to suppose that he had thereby earned the everlasting gratitude and support of the capital-wheelers, and St. Louis realestate speculators. But alas! and alack! capital-movers are ungrateful, as well as re- pubifts, and now that General John A. is up for the United States Senate in Il!inois, what does the great organ of the “movement,” the St.Louis Republican do, but turm around and rend that gentlemen's aspirations in the most vindictive manner. A terrier shaking a dead wood-chuck, or # bull tossing a bundle ot red rags, is nothing to the buffeting givem by that paper to the Honorable Geveral. “The old stagers are dis- posed of,” says the Republican, ‘poor Yates has succumbed to the invisible spirit of wine; Palmer disappointed his friends, and exuausted bis ammunition in the struggle with Trumball, and is not likely to touch a higher political peg than the one where he now hangs; while Koer- ner, Judd, and the rest of the respectable fossils hide their diminished heads in the presence ef the bero of the Big Muddy. The era of little men having fairly arrived, Logan naturally comes to the front,” Xc., Ke., ete., ete. And then the Republican, after pausing to get breath, “goes in again, and styles an & man of all calibre,” wanting ‘intellectual and moral weight.” a “blatant demagogue, server up of clap-trap “in villainuous rhetori. a dealer in “sheet-iron thunder,” a“‘bombasti-_ eal windy speechitier,"” whose ‘presence in the Senate will do Illimois no credit”; with mach more of the fame sort. It the Republican were in earnest in itzadvo- cacy ef capital moving, or had not abandoned all hope of carrying it out, that paper would certainly go in for Logan, tooth and nail for the Senate, as a great point gained. That it does not do so, but furiously assails him, shows that the St. Louis crowd consider their removal Dantling as dead, and done for. s202e- Baltimore city has a population according to census returns of 257,599. The population in 1860 was 212,418, showing an increase of 55,181 im the last ten years. The result has surprised and disappointed many Baltimoreans who, put faith in the accuracy of the amended report of the census commissioners appointed by the city in June, 1568. Their total was 352,136, but Mar- shal Goleberough expresses his belief in the correctness of the enumeration made under his direction. —— ee Much to the surprise of every body, the rail- road company is furnishing round trip tickets between tuis city and Baltimore during the rupning races there this week. Now, if the managers of the race course hai business tact and enterprise enough to properly advertise their attractions a considerable attendance from Washington might~be secured. As it is they only present an opportunity without an indace- ment. +200. Poor muddled Connery is in agreat fuss and fever because he is continually beaten by Tus Srar, and even by the Chronicle in getting news. While he is fassing about in his picayune way interviewing boot-biacks and manufactar- ing bogus accounts of weddings, he lets all the important news slip through his fingers. It was different when Harris was there. Poor n: biting Murtagh had better pay Harris what he wes him, and put him at the helm again. —+20e- There were 455 voters registered in Baltimore yesterday—343 white and 112 colored. To-day and to morrow are the last days of registration in Baltimore city prior to the November elec- tion. To-morrow the democratic party have Primary elections in the several wards for members of the First Branch of the City Coan- cil. Inseveral of the wards there are two can- didetes, “Regular” democrats and “Independ- ent” democrats. +20e- — ‘al moving convention—so-called— meets in Cincinnati to-day. The only del on hand last evening were Capital-Mover Rea- vis, of Mistouri, G. N. Stewart, of Alabama, and C. T. Forchy, of Texas, of the executive ommittee. a Muddled Connery and thum).bi ng Martagh are ina great trouble about Tag Star. Don't worry.
