EVENING STAR. Largest Cirenlation in the District .Edttor. CROSBY S. NOYES. “Reading Matter on Ey on Every Pager WASHINGT« IN OIT ¥: MONDAY. October 24, 1870. a is ered that their wickedest man is not John Allen, br! the man who set up that statucof Linc »In at Uaion Pav! We nm Star. it the man who set up the execrabls ef Lincoln in front of the Wasningt Hall’ Did he survive that wickeder dee Baltimore Sun. For some reason the Baltimore Sun is partic larly “down” on our unpretend: ng Wasiiagion on Statue of Lincoln. Well we are not prepared to Say that it is not faulty, and open to sharp criti- cism, but we can say after seeing all the thousand and one designs offered before the Committee of selection, that this was the best. Nearly every artist in the country sent a desizn, and notoriously the worst were the most am- Ditious ones, Imagine the lank figure of Lincoln in a Roman toga, and with a wreath of laurels encircling his thin three-story head! Imagine bim in a smart talma cloak; or in military cos. tume, full-chested, defiant, glaring, poking the air with asword! Mostof them had him poking the air with something, either a sword, a tran- cheon, ora roll of manuscript. But the greatest absurdities were committed in the attempt to idealize the homely face, and Isuk figure- ‘These had him draped in shawls, togas, talmas, Ke., &e., to fill out the figare for artistic effect, but the result invariably was to make somthing palpably absurd, and sure to be scouted by the Ameri people. For one thing, Lincoln never wore ashawl, or a cloak; he did wear an over- coat, and it is rather surprising that no artist has thought of meeting the difficulties of his figure by draping him in such a garment. The full length portrait of Lafayette at the Capitol, in which be is represented in a surtout shows, that that garment can be used with effect, giving fullness and dignity to the igure, and in a per- fectly legitimate manner. Well, as we were going to say, the com. mittee after examining & great many de- signs, and listening to the representations and claims of the various artists, came to the conclusion that the model presented by Lot Fiannery was the best, altogether; the attitude being simple, unattected, and Lincoln- ian, and the ikeness good. And it was not only the best presented then, but no better has since appeared te our knowledge—certainly that by Browne at Union Square, New York, is not, though e pretentious, and by an artist of leading reputation. This may not be saying much, however, for in our opinion the artist who can make a full length standing figure of Abrabam Lincoln, fully satisfactory both to artistic tastes and to the practical views of the American people bas not been heard from yet, even if he is born. SAA ‘The capital moving convention meets to-mor- row at Cincinnati—that is to say, it assumes to meet, though delegates bave thus far been ap- pointed only from four States, Missouri, Iowa, mois and Ohio. However, Reavis & Co. can ick up some bogus delegates from the streets, bey did st St. Louis last year, and thus fill out gations.” The convention will doubt- less have a jolly time in Cincinnati, be dead- heeded at all the shows in the city, and have a chance to sample the best whisky in that famous hen after orating and resoluting ‘ale old style, they will adjourn, leaving the capital where they found it. ‘The letter of Col. Forney (given elsewhere) to the convention, in answer to an invitation to b> Prescnt, is a most conclusive argument against the removal theory, and is stated with a degree of cander and good temper calculated to win conviction on that side of the house. It will be seen that he brings as his witnesses against the Project the leading men cf the west, and he Fests bis ease on their testimony. Ss +e. and The Sunday newaboys, either actuated by a spirit of mischief, or prompted by the advice of bad counsellors, seemed to be unusually noisy yesterday morning. They make a great mis. take in this. A large majority of our citizens, we are weil satistied, do not object to the little fellows adding to their scanty weekly gains by the vending of Sunday papers in a suitable way, bot when a group of half dozen or more lusty fellows congregate on a single corner or in frent of any particular locality and vie with each other in making the air hideous with their un- necessary yells, as they very frequently do, they become an unmistakeable nuisance, and run a Tisk of being abated accordingly. They are in no immediate danger, however, so long as they do not destroy common comfort nor outrage a decent respect for the Sabbath, and these things they should be careful not to do. ————-«ee- Kev. Dr. Newman, of the Metropolitan Meth- odist church, yesterday very pointedly and ef- fectually rebuked the too common practice of advertising church and secular matters from the pulpit. He protested against the habit of taking from the hour and a half devoted to divine service from fifteen to twenty minutes for the purpose of giving publicity to material atairs—a duty which can be performed with more propriety and vastly more effectiveness through the columns of the newspapers, which are maintained for that and kindred purposes. ‘The Dr. is as sound on advertising as he is on polygamy. ~ -<oe- — New Pepticatioys.—B. It appears to us, however, that suf- cient care is not taken to replace the earth cade removed or disturbed in doing the work. Unless this is thoroughly puddled or ‘ammed in and the road bed made as solid and smooth as before, there cannot be a first-class pavement secured. In that, as with nearly every thing else m life, very much will be feand to depend upon a firm foundation. ——-<ee- As bas already been foreshadowed in Tat STR, the question of successorship in the De- Partment of the Interior is definitely settled, the President having stated on Saturday even- ing that the position had been tendered to and accepted by Hom. Columbas Delano. This Oficial announcement of the fact will put at rest the stories of sensation mongers, and ceprive the public of a good deal or rather Spicy reading. Nevertheless it isas well to have the truth formally made known. --— +20e- ‘The great Fiynt-Cooledge dress-making law Suit, which has jarred the fashionable circles 0f Boston for some months past, cams to a cen- clusion last week, the jary cutting down the Dill from $1,911.11 to $1,188.30.
