Chicago bas now 43,000 more people than Bostop. In the year 1869 Boston had & popula tion of 117,000, leading Chicago. of which the Population was 19,000, by 63,000. Now Chicago has @ population of 277,000. | Cleveland has now a population of 93,018 against 43,417 im 1:69,—largely outstripping ‘its | Special rivals, Detroit and Milwaukee, which | cities in 1860 had each a population of about | 4,000. Now the population of Detroit is 79,601, | In the Western and Northwestern Sta‘es a general increase of population is shown, Illi- nois taking the lead. On the basis of the in- crease in 71 counties the population of Illinois ‘Will be about 2,506,000, or within about 239,000 of the estimated population of Ohio. New England shows more increase than had been supposed, and ber present population is estimated by the returns at 5,500,900. It seems, too, that the excess of women noted in the New England States in 1560 does not exist now to the Same extent. In that year the exces: of women was 50,000, the men being in the preponderance in Maine and Vermont, and the women in the other four States. In the South, the depletion caused by war is | shown in the census, but not to the extent of | overbalancing the increase, with the exception of the State of Louisiana, where it appears that the ravages of the four years of hostilities have not been atoned for. The returns from fifteen parishes or counties indicate that (he population of the State will be less than in 1560. The total pee of the city of New Orleans is 134,638, 782 ten years ago. This seeming gain | a of oath is mainly due, however, to the annexa- tion of suburban towns, just as the apparent in- crease in Boston is made up of the population of suburban villages added to the old city. —se0oes | ‘The recent successes of the French in sorties from the city of Paris by which they captured | some redoubts south of the city and a sitategic point of rome importance north of St. Denis, shows that the Prussian army, strong as it is, is obliged to siretch out in the immense circuit of the investment of the city in a line too thin to | admit of successful defence at all points. The | French, moving from the interior of the circle, and being able, doubtless, by bal!oom reconnois- sances to detect weak pointsin the line of in- vestment, will very likely be successful in more offensive demonstrations of the kind, buat they will have little effect in delaying the fall of the city. Successfut sorties will not bring an oance of provisions to the beleagared city, and hunger ‘must foon compe! asurrender. It is idle to talk ofacity of two millions of people being provi sioned for a siege of any length. Our own exe perience in the late rebellion showed that the immense piles of provisions stored here for army vse, and which were apparently sufficient to | vietual @ million of men for a twelvemonth | melted away under the use of afew days. And the French in this war have shown such singu- lar deticiency im their commissariat, that it is more than probable that signs of weakness in this particular will show themselves at Paris sooner, even, than is appreuended. Any hour we may hear of asudden, concentrated, ir- | resistible attack upon come point in the line of defenee. Mr. Washourn fs a shrewd poli- ticiam, and as he holds the Portland custom house, is able to wielt a good deal of inflaence. If he divides the politicians with Mr. Morrill, Governor Chamberlain's chances will ull improve. — The New York Tribune building is is to be de- molished next year and replaced by the finest printing house of America in comfort and con- verience.
