EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District CROSBY S&S. NOYES... Editor. WASHINGTON oITy: TUESDAY... eptember 13 Reading Matter on Every Page, ‘The section of King William in recognizine Napol as Emperor has beer sapposed to hare some signilicance as indicating a jurpose on his part to reinstate the Napolro. regime in power, or at any rate,® determination not to coante- nance a Kepublican form of government for France. This construction of his course seems, however,'o have no good basis. The trath prpb- ably is that King William is a good deal puzzied just new to know with whom he istodeal. There w,*o be sure,a temporary provisional govern nen’ at Paris, but it can hardly be said to have at sumed consistency, sbape and strength to repro- sent the entire country. It was elected by a minority of the French Legisiature, aud is so weak on its legs that already there are symptoms Of its overthrow by the more radical Republi- cans. It may be fairly claimed, indeed, that it more nearly represents the French pcople than does the deposed Napoleon; but docs it really and adequately repreront the pcople of France? Can its action be considered binding on them in the great questions to be settled ? The other great European powers—Great Britam, Russia, and Aastria—have not yet rec- ognized the French republic, probably waiting to see if it promises to live, and when they do, it is pretty certain that Prossia will do the same. ‘That Prussia will undertake to dictate to France who shall be its raler, or what its form of gov- ernment, ts im the last Yegree improbable. Bismarck may essay by diplomacy to “assist” tn the election made by France, bat there will be no dictation. A government imposed on France by Prussia would be particularly distastefal to the high spirited Freneh people; and tt would need to be sustained in power by a muti larger Prussian army ef occupation at Paris than the French army of occupation that has sustained the ——- power of the Pontif at Rome. a New Yoru Rervaiican Pourrica—The can- vass in New York begins to excite come atten- tion now that the State ticket! has been put in the fie is In the Legislature, the Post says, the ns expect to regain many of the dis- ch were lost in 189; for example. Su‘- folk county, the Urst district of Orange; the Srsi and fourth of Albany, Warren, Schenectady, Fulton, Otsego: the second of Delaware; the second of Oswego, Schuyler, Steuben. This would give them control of the Awemb'y. In the congressional districts the nominations have pot been fully made. Inthe Eleventh di - s70. | trict it is expected that Edward M. Madden will + be nominated by the Republicans in placeot General Van Wyck, and that the Democrats will @ again nominate Mr. George W. Green. John H. | ™ Ketcham is sure te be renominated in the ‘Twelfth. In the Fifteenth and Sixteenth dis- tricts there are disaffections in the Kepublicas ranks whéeh threatens to do misehiet. William A. Wheeler has beem reuominated im the Seven- teenth, and his election is deemed certain. In the Bighteenth the difficulties are in a fair way of arljustment, anditis probable that Mr. Ha- thorn, the proprietor of Congress Hall at Sara- toga, will be the successful Republican can- didate. ‘The present indications favor the nomination of Elizur H. Prindle, of Norwich, im the Nive- teenth district. If nominated, there ts no rea- sonable doubt of his election. There 1s a quar- relin the Twentieth district about a successor to Mr. Laflin. Mr. Bagley.-of Jeierson, and Clinton L. Merrian, of Lewis, are eandidates. Af the matter is not adjusted the district may send ademocrat. Ellis H. Roberts, of the Utica Morning Herald, will receive the republican nomination in the Twenty-first district, in place of Judge Bailey. The district 1s close. Gen. Wm. E. Lansing, of Madison, has been agreed upon as the successor to Mr. Churcht!l. The renomination of Mr. Hotchkiss in the ‘Twent;-sixth is probable. The Twenty-eighth has two nominations to make—a candidate to complete the term of Jadge Davis, and another for the next Congress. For years there have been accimouious disputes in this district. Judge Davis bad a majority of 1,600, but his successor may be @ democrat. The Erie dis- trict Bas always been warmly contested. The republicans confidently expect t> elect the suc- cessor to Mr. Bepneit. Im the Thirty-trst dis- trict, Mr. Sheldon probably will not be nomi- nated, but it is very uncertain who will be. -—— ++ee- ‘There has been some speculation as to the business pursuits Vice President Coifax pro- poses to enter upon as hinted in his letter, upon his withdrawal from pablic life. The New York Standard suggests in this connection that in the event of Mr. Greeley’s retirement trom the Tri- dune, to accept the English mission, or by reason of advaticing years, Mr. Colfax will be called upon to succeed him, and that some such reason as this impelled Mr. Colfax to his resolution. We doubt, however, if either has any such idea. Mr. Greeley, apparently, has a good deal of work im him yet, and has no idea of being turned out to pasture, op the retired list for the Test of his life; and pretty certainly Mr. Colfax ‘oul pet consent to play second fiddie apon the Tritune, oF any other paper. An interesting sensational story bas been put 1m circulation to the effect that, as the mext U. 5S. Sepator from Ohio ig to be chosen by the Legislature to be elected this fall, Senator Sherman and Commissioner Delano have made an alliance offensive and defeusive, whereby the former is to be re-elected to the Senate and the latter is to be made Seeretary of the ‘Treasury vice Boutwell, who is to be conveni- ently put oat of the way to make the required vacaney. Unfertumatelr for the trath of the story, Sen- ator Shérman’s term does not expire until 1373, and the Legislatare which is to choose his sac- cessor wili not be elected until two years hence. ‘The imagimative author of the canard hatched his bantling just two years too soon. ——__-+e-- Tt was understood that the Bowen Aldermen last night designed to make some further fac. ous opposition to the excellent nominations vent in by Mayor Emery, butit such was their purpose they sensibly reconsidered it, and in- stead promptly accepted Spalding's invitation to visit hissuperb theater, andsee the bewitching Zavistowski sisters. ———_ -see- —— A project for laying another telegraphic cable from England to America is anronnced in Lon- don.
