EVENING STAR. Largest Cireulation in the District CROSBY 8S. NOYES.......Editor. WASHINGTON CITY: THERSpDAY. «August 235, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. ‘The war telegrams from Europe to-day are of the same conflicting ebaracter as on yesterday im regard to the position of the contending armies. It is asserted and denied that Bazaine is cooped up im Metz. It is stated from the French side that the fact that prisoners taken by Bazaire at Gravelotte are arriving at Sois- | fon, is proof that the French communications with Metz are intact; but it seems now to be conceded on that side that Bazaine has not left the vicinity of Metz—certainly that he has not got away to Montmedy, fifty miles from Metz. That McMahon has abandoned Chalons there seems to be no doubt, but we are left in uncer- tainty whether he bas fallen back on Paris or bas gone forward to the relief of Metz and Ba- zaine. It is also stated that the Prussians are push- ing on to Paris again, and that they are to-day in possession of McMahon's deserted camp at Chalons. This column of the Prussians at Cha- lons may be only a reconnoissance in force, as it does not appear probable that they will move at once on Paris with McMahon and Bazainein their rear. But the Prussians may fee] themselves strong enough to move on Paris without regard to the vastly inferior force of McMaton and Bazaine combined. They have the possession now of short inside lines, and can advance on Paris or fall back on their communications in much less time than the French can reach the same points. And though in some respects the sitnation would seem to be more favorable for the French than it was five days ago, it is difficult to figure out any advantage gained by them caleuiated to alter the result. ‘The Germans in that five days have been gathering themselves up for another blow, and there agems to be no reason to doubt that when Gelivered it will be quite as effective as the pre- vious crushing strokes. The details of the late battles show that the French fought with des- perate gallantry, but that they were not only outgeneraled, but literally crushed by over- powering numbers. The correspondent of the Tribune, writing from a Prussian stand-point, concedes that the French were catnumbered two or three to one. It is useless now to inquire bow it was that Napoleon made such a terrible miscalculation as to the relative force each side could put in the field; the fact is before us, and the conela- sion is irresistible that the same vast prepon- derance of numbers will by its own momentum overrun all resistance. ‘The Parisians stil! hold to the idea of a battle and a French victory achieved since Saturday, but there are no particulars or location, and the report wouldseem te be of the same character a8 previous rumors of successes in the field, pat \ n cireulation Yor stock-jobbing or other purpo- ses. The only conflict approaching the name of & battle was a sortie made by the French garri- son at Toul on Wednesday, when, according to French reports, 700 Prussians were killed. +202. We have no ill-will whatever to the American Press Association, believing that the newspa- pers who take either from them or from the As- sociated Press are benefitted by wholesome com- Petition on the part of the associations. Bat that association will gain nothing by misrepresenta- tion. There is, for instance, not a shado: of truth in thestatement that “Tae Evextya Star last night printed half a column of the dis- patches of the American Press Association and headed them from ‘A private source.’ ” We have to say that every word of our dis- Patches come to us by Associated Press from 3 York, and the American Association knows perfectly well that such is the case. While on this subject we may add that such charges come with bad grace from that quarter, since on yesterday their bulletin appropriated a half a column of Associated Press dispatches Printed by us the preceding day, and the head- ing of which was changed to read “A corres- Pondent at Paris telegraphs,” sc., in place of the heading in our despatch “The following is a special to the Courier des Utats Unis.” “The telegrams from private sources,” refer- red to in our dispatches, are obtained direct from certain bankers in Wall street, who throw a to the press generally, without dis- inetion. The fact that the Prussians with their needle guns have been threatening them from the east has been pretty well understood for some time past; and yesterday came the melancholy intelligence that that fearful old smooth bore, “Victor Hugo, has appeared on the western shore of France clothed in the uniform of the home guard.” Poor Paris!
