EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on E Every Page, — A new turn is given to th tion” by the morement of Bazaine from Metz to Montmedy by way of Andun. From thisit |. would appear that Bazaine was not so tightly bottled up in Metz as the Prussians supposed, butit remains to beseen if the alert Prossians will allow him to effecta junctnre with McMa- hon, who, ik seems, is moving to that end from Chalons, proceeding north of Verdun. Montmedy is a fortitied town in the Depart- ment of Meuse on the Chiers, 25 miles north of Verdun. It is also on the circuitous line of rail- Toad connecting Mets with Paris by way of Rheims, where Napoleon hes his headquarters. it is about 50 miles from Metz to Montmedy, and it seems remarkable that Bazaine should have succeeded im getting away that distance unde- tected by the Prussians, who appeared up to Sunday to hold him ina vice. We are inclined yet to question that he is @ Montmedy, bat he may be heading in that direction. There are contticting reports as to the position of the Crown Prince, one ts the effect that he is marching on Paris south of Chalons, another that he has formed @ junction with Prince Frederick Charles west of Metz. Lf he is in the last named position, he may lave been recalled from the march on Paris, to aid in meeting the new strategic movement of McMahon and Bazaine. If he is vet on the way to Paris, McMehon in marching in the op- posite direction to join Bazaine, would seem to be imitating the movements of Hood to the rear of Sherman in the famous march of the latter to thesea. It remains t> be seen whether McMahon will have better luck than befel Hood. LaTer—By a later telegram from London it seems to be confirmed that the Crown Prince bas abandoned bis direct advance on Paris, to go to the support of the Prussian centre and right, near Mets, threatened by the combined forces of McMahon and Bazaine. ——= been — . ‘The engineers of the several railroads center- ing in Baltimore having been requested by the president of the Union Kailroad Compan: that city to consider the question of the practicable route for the Union Railroad from the northwestern boundary of the city to join with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Western Maryland Katiroad, Baltimore and Potomac Rail road, the Northern Central Kallroad, Bal- timore, Philadelphia and Wilmington Kailroad, thence to tide water at Canton, have adopte: what is known as the Baltimore and Potomac Kailroad route, for which they have anordi- nance of the city giting them the right to tannel under the beds of the streets from the western limits to Jones’ Falls, The engineers all concur in the report except Mr. Kandolph, of the Bal- timore and Ubio Kailroad, who approves of the route as an engineer, but is of the opim jon that it will operate unequally and to the disadvantage of the road he represents, so that the Baltimore and Ohio Company will probably seek @ route of their own. The Baltimore and Potomac railroad has con- demned by jury all the land they require for them route up to the city limits, and juries are to be summoned next month to condemn the property up to the mouth of the tunnel, which is to commence at the junction of: Gilmor and Winchester streete- The tunnel will commence at Gilmor street, passing from thence under the bed of Winchester street, close slong the line of the northern fence of the Cathedral burying ground. After it crosses under the bed of Fre- mont street it will enter the ground secured for a western depot, between Fremont and Penn- sylvania avenue, making an open break in the tunnel. From thence it will pass in a tunnel under Pennsylvania avenue to the entrance of ‘Wilsn street, and thence under the bed of Wij- son street to the Northern avenue, and under the bed of Northern avenue to the Falis. —-+ee- —___— MARYLAND PowrTics.—About tive hundred white and colored Republicans assembled last night at Mount Vernon Hall, in Baltimore, in Attendance upon a mass meeting called by those favorabie to the nomination of General Adam E. King as a candidate for Congress from the ‘Third Congressional District of Maryland. General hing is well known in this city, having been on the stat? of General Augur dering the war. A goodly portion of those present were, it appears, favorable to the nomination of R. Stockett Matthews, Esq.. instead of Genera! King, and the disorder was so great that the meeting broke up in # row without accomplish- ing anything. They seem to manage things better in the Fourth Instrict. The Republicans of Carroll county met in convention on Monday last, and With great unanimity instructed their delegates to the Lvistrict Convention to vote for the nomi- nation of Hon. John E. Smith as their candidate for Congress. The New York Herald comes out strongly in faver of civil service reform, dwelling more es- Pecially upon the pernicious custom of changing clerks at the dictation of every Congressman or politician of influence in the dominant party. ‘The Herald dates the growth of this bad prac- tice since Lincoln's time, and charges it upon the Kepublican party; but it really had its origin in the times of Jacksonian Democracy. Itts, however, @ pernicious practice wherever and whenever originated, and if the Republ* an party did not give it birth, they are respon- sible for adopting it. That it should be broken up there is no doubt. but that it will be is du- bious so long as the “ patronage” of this sort is held to be the perquisites of members of Con- gress, to be used by them in paying for elec- toneering work. —<26e-——__ A correspondent inquires, elsewhere, by whose Permission it is that a circus, now exhibiting here, is permitted to syuat down on 6th street, near Pennsylvania avenue, to the detriment of the rights and interests of the residents in that vicinity; and also why the same shew is permit- ted to streteh an ungainlystructure of boards along the most conspicuous portion of Pennsyl- vauia avenue?
