B. PRENCH. HIS.DEATH THIS MORKING. SKETCH OF HIS LIFE. Arrangements for the Faneral. Our entire community were shocked to-day by the unexpected announcement that Major B. B. French, who has for several years past held many important positions of honor and trust in our midst, expired at 1 o'clock this morning at his residence, No. 137 East Capitol street. He has been in ill health for a few weeks past, but it was not feared that he was afflicted with a mortal disease. The immediate cause of death was diserse ofthe heart. He leaves a wife and two sons, one of whom is a resident of Boston, and was with him at the time of his death. He had been sick for about two weeks, but rallied so much that yesterday morning he arose, dressed, and was so apparently well that he played three games of crivbage with his eld- cst son, Frank, who had been telegraphed for trom , About el sped hope het og It was so severe at times that he could be heard far outside the premises oaning with pain. Doctors C. M. Ford and illiam P. Johnston tried all in their power to relieve his excessive suffering without avail. He was such a strong, hearty man that nature made a fearful stry le to hold its own, only to most excru agony of ceased. ‘The last time he was seen In public was on the occasion of the press excursion to Giement a ow weeks snce, waen he seamed as well as ever. but coi excessive fatigue in walking home from the boat. = _ Mr. French’s “<< in the Masonic fraternity is well krown. At the time of his decease he was Lieutenant Grand Commander of the Supreme Council of the Thirty-Third degree, besides having been Grand Master of the Dis- trict of Columbia, and Grand Master of the Knights Templar. Indeed so allied had his name become with Meso that one of the mest Gourishing lodgcs in this city bears his bame. SKETCH OF B18 LIFE. Benjamin B. French was born in Chester, Rockingham county, New Hampshire, on the 4th day of September, 1800. He was the sonof Daniel and Mercy French. His mother’s maiden name was Brown, She was the daughter of Ben- jamin Brown, of Cheater, and sister of Francis rown, aneminent divine, who at the time of his death, in 1821, was president of Dartmouth college. ‘Mr.French was the only child of his mother, who when he was eighteen months old. His facher was a lawyer of high stancing, = ‘was for several years. it was the earnest desire of his father and friends that he should enter » which he declined o, tae go tae to Leryn with a view of goin, Disappointed in obtaining a berth a board a ship, he enlisted as a soldier in the army of the United States and was station- ed at Fort Warren, on Governor’s Island, in the harber of Boston, with a ent of the eighth regiment of infantry. He was, soon after enlisting, ay ited a sergeant and performed his duty fait iy for about four months, when, at the solicitation of his iciends, who provided a substitute, he left the army on the lth day of September, 1419. He then returned to his father’s, and although contri to his own inc’‘nations, commenced the study of law, which he pursued with dili- gence for tive years, that being the time fixed y the bar rules of New Hampshire. At the February term of the court of common pleas for the county of Rockingham, held at Ports- mouth, in 1825, Mr. French was admitted an at- torney at law; and inthe month of March fol- lowing, commenced the at Hookset, in the county of Merrimack, from whence, in Sep- tember, he removed to Sutton, and married Elizabeth S. Richardson, daughter of the pay William M. Richardson, lef justice of thi supreme court of New Hampshire. Mr. French entered immediately into ful ice, and with bis industry and natural tact, would provably have taken a respectable place at the bar had he contin! his proiession. He was elected assistant clerk of the senate of New Hampshire, in June, 152i, to which office he was twice reelected. In'l%32 he was elected a repre- sentative from the town of Newport, in his na- tive State, towhich he had removed, and was reelected for the two sucgceding years. For three years of the time Mr. French resided at Newport, he was editor of the New Hampshire Spectator, a democratic FORGE, and is sub. scr.ption list more than doubled while it was under his control. It was afterwards united with the New Hampshire Argus, and edited by Hon. Edmund Burke, and is still published at New- rt. Porte was appointed an assistant clerk of the U. S. McNulty, and when the latter left the oflice of Clerk of the House,on the !sth of January, 1545, the deceased was elected to that office. re was also unanimously re-elected by the next and several succeeding Congresses. He was also member of the Levy Court, and the Oldest Inhabitant's Association. He was kuown thro: it the country for his high standing in the Masonic fraternity. He was Grand Master of the District and Past Most Eminent Grand Commander of the Knights Templar of the United States. His title of Major, by which he has always been known, came from the fact of his baving held a major’s commission in the New Hamp- shire militia. Young Kelly was examined and cross-examined at consider- able length, and although he did not come out entirely free from suspicion, still there was nothing on which to reasonably found the belief that he had anything to do with the crime—at least directly. Some of his statements may be hereafter contradicted, and thus his statements be altogether discredited; but at present there appears to be not the slightest probability that he can im any way be connected with the murder. It may, nevertheless, have been committed by some one with whom he is ac- quainted, and with whom he may have conversed about the Nathan family and their great wealth. He admitted of an enlistment in Lawrence. Mass., under an assumed name, in 1961, and that since his diseharge from the army, in 165 be has been without regular employment. In contradiction to previous testimony, he stated he had a conversation with two men on Madison Square oy the evening before the murder. Other testimony proved that the “dog” with which the murder was committed had been seen about Mr. Navhan’s premises one year .
