LETTER FROM COBG'S ISLAND. Bathing, Fistng and Ganning. Conn ISLAND, ore Virotnta, ? August 5, lid. |§ Dear Star:—A long stretch of white, glisten- ing sand spreading out into the ocean as far as the eye can reach, a vest expanse of heaving, surging waters, breaking ‘madl: inst a reat of grayislr rock, a seething surf of milk-white foam splashing fitfully over a smooth, hard beach, a score or more geoups of gaily-attired bathers plunging gleefslly among the breakers or gathering shells and other curiosities tossed up by the sea, a miniature village of suow-white frame houses covered with a luxuriant growth of creeping vines, a vista of rustic cottages peeping picturesquely irom among green trees and hedges, a tremulous back ground of 0 and the distant Virginia mainland, are the mn objects upon which the eye of the traveler ashe looks forth from the verandah of the urious hotel on Cobb's Is! Cobb House. DESCRIPTION OF COPB'S ISLAND. Cobb's Istand is, in a certain measure, in its swath lothes, ‘That js, it has hardly come to be known 93 a full-grown watering place, and it yet lacks the anaual rush of fashion to estab- lish it a8 one of (he serside resorts. Its claims to popular attention and patronage are not weak- ened by ths fact, however, for it+ unequaled surf advantages, the genuine hospitality of its hotel owners, an¢ the thousand and one other attractions so necessary to its own prosperity, and so grateful to the traveler, are matters of established fact, and as such cannot, in the long run, fail to gain for it a wide-spread and permarent reputation, second to that of no other watering place in the country. ITS REMARK ADLE FEATURE: ‘The island, which 's about four miles long by two broad, takes its name irom that of its owner, the father of the three proprietors of the hotels ‘on its eastern coast, who many years ago bought it, itis said, at the remarkable figure of $150 and 4 bushels of salt. It is, in reality, a long sand bar thrown up above the level of the sea by some mighty convulsion of nature, and not, »s many have been led to suppose, the result of extraordinary tidal intlaenees acting on the vcean bed beneath until an island was formed ‘The latter theory may be shown to be incorrect by the fact that a long stretch of reef protects it seaward which never shows a sand deposit, and that the water immediately beyond attains a depth of nearly forty fathoms, and is clear and green even in the stormiest of weather. More- over, ol “ervations made during the last eight yerrs, during which the place has been open as a public resort, show that the island has lost rather than gained in dimensions, its northern extremit, ng been worn away by the waves toa dis of thirty feet or more. HOW TO REACH THE ISLAND. ‘To reach Cobb’s Island from Washington one is compelled to make someting of a detour, and this, perhaps, is the only drawback to the most perfect enjoyment from the moment of leaving that city to the return to it. ‘To be obliged to lay over a day in Norfolk is never agreeable, even in winter, unless one has acquaintance or business there, and their patience comes into play largely a» a_ virtue; in summer it is almost unéndurabie. ‘The blistering heat thatprises perceptibly from the parched pavements, the ilapidated appearance of the houses and city gererally, the evident want of cleanliness in the streets, roken down, wearicd air that seems to have settled like a pall over the entire com- munity,—sad result of the late wer,—are far from being attractive, and it is with a sigh of hearty reliet that you step on board of the boat which is to carry you to your place of destina- tion on the other side of Cape Charles, distant about forty-five miles. ‘The trip from Baltimore to the island is pre- ix id, known as the tes, able because of its an view of the whole island and the Sither bout $7: tis incl ade ither way is the same, a ri rt be bing, fare and t ground as the scene of some of the events of the late war, will en- feasicaesten oie erates Owe ful sce Sides of him the passage to the lower capes. My own immediate servant bore the name of dwckcon. He told me confidentially one day that he bel to the Jackson family, who settled in V t hundred ‘ since. He, himself, had been a slave, and had persed through a dozen ditferent hands until the emancipation proclamation of President Lin- coin had set him free and sent him on his way — He entered the Union lines early in spring of 183, where, in common with many of his fellow-treed- men, he thought a life of ease, without work and the o cares of life, awaited him. Discovering tos mistake, he ebliged to have recourse to the frients’ of his former master. One of these happened to be old Mr. Cobb, who took bim into bis family and installed him into the office of walter at the hotel which bears his name. Jackson is an original genius, whose acquaintance is well worta cultivating. Like the generality of his race, he has a copiors iow of iangauge, though not’ always happy in the selection of his worrs, and somewhat inclined to chcumlocution and verbiage. He can tell vou the intimate history of a score or 80 of old \ ir- : lies, and bis recollections date back ssiderable accuracy to the begivning of the present century. SEA AIR AS is SEA ATR. ‘The bracing salt air, which here never dies away, contributes Jargely to the comfort and appetites of the guests. There is but one por- tion of the day when the ocean breeze fails to move the tree tops and long rows of hedge. This 's about noon, when the gests are mostly within doors, engaged in writing letters or ing a mid-day siesta. But it does not last The morning breeze, after 1's short re- spite. renews ive! towards the close of the at- terncon, and by tive o’clock blows stittty inland, crowning the heavy swells with the whitest or snow caps, and causing the pleasure craft to skim mertily along, the sea gulls watine birds te overhead in ex bers, At night—giorious comtort—one sle under a blauket. Cobb Island, like any other place has its drawbacks. Fer instance, the carriage drives are limited and lee pleasant than those of Newport or Long Branch. ‘The country has more barren aspect owing to the fact before stated, fits being a sand bar, and the in- land scerery wants diversification; its contines, foo, are somewhat resiricted, and amusements & recreation are limited to whatsea and the tire side can produce. ut the latter are sutticient. Any place that offers a beach shelving gradually with the ocean without a dangerous undertow to swrep the ungu .rded bevond their. depth; which abounds in ail sorts of finny and feathery gue; that has good home accommodations aud agreeably society: has attractions enough for teng, whether the drives be nized Or a sandy road, iu a rock- agon. NO PLACE FOR JIM FISK. The President, Fisk, dr., Vanderbilt, Astor, and other purse-plethoric fashionables in the North, will never tind their way to this latitade, because their trotters would be cramped for want of sea-room. ‘The abacnce of good roads isnot felt, however, in the multitude of other attractions, and we at Cobb’s Island manage to yess the time without so much as a thought of ennui intruding itself, WHAT ONE DOES AT COnn’s ISLAND. There are several methods of whiling away the honrs of daylight, and the routine is gene- Tally the samt with persons of both sexes. Everybody rises with the sun—or, at least, not later than six o’clock. ‘There is a strong breeze then sweeping in from the ocean, which neces- sitates warm clothing, the ladies appearing in high-necked dresses, with a scarf around the throat to protect it. Inthe early morning the cc tunes are picturesque in the extreme, espe- cially those of the ) Who may be seen tumbling among the breakers as soon as the sun has lifted above the horizon. A PRETTY RATHER. ‘These early “ducks” are principally of the masculine gender, though occasionally a jaunty hat, with its long ribbon fluttering gaily in the wind, eh soft face underneath, resque bathing dress enveloping and yet scatve concealing a form of delicate outline, may be seen nearly every morning suwikinz out seaward as boldly as the staunchest male swimmer. This lady is one of the daughters of a couthern Sen- ator, whose name I ld mention were she not at my elbow to enforce the preservation of her =. There are always one or more surf boats in attendance, manned by stout, lusty fel'ows, whose sole business it is to keep an eye on the venturesome. XO UNDERTOW. Their services are merely nominal, how- ever, for there is no undertow, and it is an easy matter for ope going beyond his depth to regain terra firma again, the incoming waves performing the office of carrier for him. HOW THE DAY 18 SPENT AT CONB’S ISLAND. About ten o’clock in the morning, by which time several hours have elapsed since breaktest was discussed, the beach swarms with bathers, and until eleven, when, to use a nautical © pression, the sun is over the foreyard and it is time to “smile,” (mysterious word—not wholly uknown, however, to the sterner sex,) the scene is merry in the extreme. By noon all are comfortably housed. except such parties as are busy with the book and line, or sailing to and iro in the open sea beyond the line of surf. The water here uts abounds in fish of all the various sorts pr tothe South. Sea trout, tailors, Sheepshead, hogshea:l, tiounders, crabs, ete., are canght in great profusion. The hotels might easily be supplied by what their guests Drought home with them, but they have their own puid fishermen, so that a large quantity of this delicate food goes to waste. THE PARADISE OP SPORTSMEN. ‘To those who are fond of shooting an exten- tive field isopen. The beach towards the close ef the afternoon is fairly alive with water fowl; curlew, plover, grayback and sand snipe it, and many other species of birds tiock to the shore to feed on the muscles and other food left by the retiring of the sea. One evening last week Messrs. Godfrey and Burch, of Washing- ton, shot one hundred and twenty-four dierent birds in less than two hours without once leay- ing the verandah of the hotel. Mr. N.F. Cobb, who takes charge of the fishing and shooting SS bas so arranged it that guests can have heir hooks baited and guns by a servant without charging it in your bill as extras. OYSTERS ON THE HALY SNELL. The oyster houses are on the beach, nearly contiguous t> the Cobb’s House kitchen. Here one cam go and enjoy the delicious bivalves fresh from the water without stir:. The shuck- ing house stands within a tew fet of the spot wl the oyster rakes are in operation, 80 that the oyster i**clt comes from a shell that fs drip- ping with the water that a moment before cov- ered it.
