Courier gives the following particulars of a case of cruelty in the former city: “The chief topic in the town now is the out- rageous treatment of their neice, Miss Mollie Stevens, by Mr. Liva Lafond and his wife. The accused were arrested yesterday on a charge of most beartiess cruelty toward the young lady whom they had in their power. The matter has been much talked of for several weeks in that portion of the city where Lafond lives. The neighbors have observed how Miss Stevens was beaten, starved, apeense and otherwise infamously dealt with. She has had no sufficient or decent clothing, and she has been kept in most filthy condition, so as to deter her from ventu1ing abroad should she get out of her ee pohoad <= is room she has ol stood piteously begging every one who came in hearing for bread. She has almost daily been heard to shriek and écre: under the biows and other torments intlicted upon her by her unnatural uncle and aunt. Some time ago a number of ladies rushed into Lafond’s house to her rescue, and found her held down upon the tioor by her aunt, who was stuffing salt in quantities into her mouth, ayes and pose. On Sunday last, her cries becoming heartrending, the neighbors again invaded the Premises, and caught Lafond himself, armed With @ paddle bored full of holes, holding Miss Stevens’ clothing above her head and beating her pittilessly on her bare person. She is a ekeleton, bruised and scarred from head to foot, scarcely able to walk alone, and ost an idiot from her sutterings: Clothes had to be given her, yesterday, to cover her, before she could be brought into the police court. ‘The examination of Lafond and his wife is postponed until to-morrow, and Miss Stevens has been placed in charge of a tamily that will take good care of her. Her guardian and brother. who live in an adjacent county, have been sent for. All the parties are said to be re- spectable and of good family, and the guardian of Miss Stephens pays Lafond a liberal monthly allowance for her board and clothing.” ———— ee A BrNoLep Cownrping AvPair.—We have information that Bob Toombsattempted to cow- hide a Methodist minister a few days % because he would not swear as a witness, as Mr. Toombs desired him; but the preacher, not being one of the over fastidious, grabbed Mr ‘Toombs by the throat and would have damaged no wind-pipe, had not the bystanders taken em apart.
