THE RAILROAD MEN AT PITTSBURG. WHAT THEY SAW THERE. [Editorial Correspondence of The Star.) PITTSBURG, June 16, 1570. Our party of Southern railroad men were met some forty-five miles outside of Pittsbarg by a delegation of officials and prominent business men of that city on hospitality intent, and al- most before we had washed off the dust and grime of a day’s travel, at the Union Depot hotel, they were on band with a programme blocked out for our entertainment, the feature for that night deing a visit to the places of amusement in the city. The performances were not noteworthy, aud the theaters are rather dingy; but one feature struck me as well-worth imitation by our Washington managers, and more particularly by our police. The theater being rather crowded, some of the audience undertook to place chairs im the aisles, but were promptly checked by the ushers, who explained that the act would render the mana- gers liable to a fine of fifty dollars, and that the police would enforce the penalty! We have laws against blocking up the aisles of places of amusement in Washington, but nobody ever heard of their being executed. And a Wash- ington usher who should undertake to keep the passages of a theater free under any absurd pretense of interference by the police, would be considered quite as unfit for his business as a ‘Washington car-conductor who should be green enough to stop at a crossing to pick up transfer Passengers. Our Metropolitan Police is in many respects the best in the world, but is the weakest just in those points where it should be the strongest—i. e., in the execution of disagreeable laws. Every visitor to the seat of government is amazed by the sight of hogs, geese, goats and cows running at large in all the streets, and is disposed to charge the discredit- able spectacle upon our law-makers; bat We bave stringent laws on the subject, only the Police will not execute them. Soof the law pro- Viding for the safety of visitors to places of Smnsement, the police will not execute it. No one who bas seen our leading theater on a crowded opera night blocked up in all its pas. sages with chairs, and with but a single exit for the entire house, but mast look upon it as a regular murder-trap in case of fire or other ac- cident. There will be 4 terrible Teaponsibility tor somebody to bear in case of such accident with its terrible loss of life; and in ali kindness | We advise our police authorities to take @ hint from the manner in which the Pittsburg ‘police enforce such laws. A im the Smoke. This morning early a delegation of ye solid men of Pittsburg, including the Mayors of Pittsburg and Allegheny City, took us in charge for a day's sight-seeing amongst the great manufacturing establishments of ths Smoky City. The day opened with the ever- lasting rain that followed us all the way from Washington; and a rainy day in Pittsburg has probably elements of the disagreeable such as a rainy day has nowhere else on the globe. On such a day the coal-smoke is packed down in this narrow hedged-in valley as if in a well, and there is moist smirch and smut upon every- thing touched that is twice as disagreeable as the unpleasant smirch and smut of adry day. | The Aristocracy of Turnea Up Trow- | in EN fred tbe the nexi meeting of | your Lodge, cde, WEDNESDAY he 224 ae at nf h and ev one of you are person: int Portat ea ery bi the 1, | will be presented. By order serh-2t ‘The millionaires of Pittsburg, the great iron- | masters, and men of steel and of glass, pride themselves upon a sort of tlat-hoatman simplicity | of dréss. Our escort, which perhaps embraced | three-quarters of the wealth of this rich city, | was headed by David A. Stewart, the Stewart | of the famous Columbia oi] wells, and of the great Pittsburg Locomotive Factory, who worea dollar felt hat that looked as if it had served as | @ mark for a target company, and had his rough | and ready trowsers turned up at the bottom, at le Jeast a foot higher than any state of mud would | demand. Mayor Brush, of Pittsburg, had his pants turned up; Mayor Callow, of Allegheny, bad Ais pants turned up. President Carp-gie, | of the Union Iron Mills, had Ais turr-2 up; 80 bad Messrs. It had never struck me that our party Wasa particularly solemnone; but the gloom of the Pittsburg smoke and soot may have hada Gepressing effect. Anyhow we soon noticed | city. The sand for its manufactare is brought from Mifitin county, Pennsylvania, aod the soda ash is found in the vicinity of Pittsburg. The manufacture of ginss was started here as long ago as 1787, and by fo less a person than Albert Gallatin. Now the business has grown to mammoth proportions. For instamee no leas than 70,000,000 botties and vials are made here per annum, and this is but one department. About 500,000 bexes of window glass are made here yearly, and the total value of the annual glass products of Pittsburg is about $7,000,009! The Lyons works visited by us makes the finer flint glass ware, and it is wonderful to see how this pressed glass is made to take the shape, in sharpness of outline and beauty of design of the costly cut glass it has so successfully dis- placed. ‘Next we were taken to the works of the West- inghouse Alr-brake Company, where the new style of air-brakes for railroad cars, already de- scribed, are manufactured. Next we Inspected Shoenberger’s great Rol!l- ing Mill and Nail Factory, where 1,590 men are employed, and 800 kegs of nails of ali sizes are here of seeing the new process of mixing pul- verized ore with the melted ore as.it comes from the furnaces, which has attracted the attention of some of the members of the British Diplo- matic Corps at W: and induced a re- cent visit to Pittsburg for its inspection. improved. ‘The Steel Spring Works of A. French & Co. were the next visited. These works are devoted to the construction of springs for railroad cars. In the afternoon we were taken to the Pitts. burg Locomotive Works, (D. A. Stewart Pres- ident,) where cars and locomotives are made throughout. Three hundred men are and they turn out work at the rate of about fifty first-class jocomotives per year. After this we visited some more of the five hundred and sixty- two “works,” or merufacturing establistments of Pittsburg, and then— Went up in = Balloon, Boys! — or words to that effect, for we were mounted in a sort of car and jerked up through the pall of Pittsburg smoke with a perpendi: made per day- An opportunity was afforded | It is claimed that the product of the puddling | furnaces is not only greatly increased by this | process, but that the quality of the iron is also | that suggested a direct ascent to the clouds. Pittsburg has the disadvantage of being situ- ated on a narrow tongue of land, hemmed in by nearly perpendicular hills four or tive hun- dred feet high. She has no capability of ex- pansion except by surmounting these preeipices; and the process of zigzags by which these heights are attained has been a serious drawback to communication between the business ‘valley and the heights above. Some inventive Yankee has now devised the plan of an inclined plane rail by which cars are run up and down a track feet long at an angle of 35 degrees. The grade ts so steep, in fact, that the racket-wheel, used for eafety in inclined plane railways elsewhere, cannot beemployed here, as it would fly off. At the White Mountains, what is called the “per- pendicular railway,” has only an angle of 19 degrees. ‘The cars on this Pittsburgh incline are moved by stahonary engines at the top and are drawn by wire ropes. They run from 5 a.m. to 11 p. m., and hare accommodated as high’ as 5,500 passengers in a day, taking from twenty to thirty passengers toa load. The railway looks frightfully dangerous, but the American people will risk their necks at any time to save a cil cumbendibus of a mile, and this new wrinkle is likely to solve the problem how Pittsburg shall | get elbow room; and enable her to expand to a | city of five hundred thousand and perhaps-a million of inhabitants. Our first stop was at the Union Iron Mills, which are devoted to the manufacture of iron bridges, fire-proof material, &c. Pittsburg, from its wonderful conjunction of navigation, and manufacturing supplies, coal, iron, petroleum, chemical salts, &c., may be said to be the most favored spot on the surface of the earth for manufacturing operations in iran, steel, glass, &c. So partial has Nature been to Pittaburg in her gifts that her manu- facturers are able to compete with the rest of the world, with heavy odds in their favor. ‘Thus im the matter of iron bridges, the Key- Stone Bridge Company, in the service of which these Union Mills are engaged, has virtually the monopoly of iron-bridge building for the country. The extent of its operations is only Himited by the extert of its capacity to perform work. Mr. J. H. Linville, Presidentof the com- pany. tells me that the work contracted for this year will amount to about $5,000,000. This in- cludes the great bridge at St. Louis, having three spans of 515 feet; that in Cincinnati 2,000 feet long and with spans from 290 to 420 feet; that at Belaire (fer the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad) having one span of 36 feet, one of 210 and three of 200; bridges at Keokuk, Middie- town, Connecticut, Baltimore, and at points all over the | The reputation of the Pittsburg-made bridges | *s due largely, no doubt, to the care given to the working of the iron. For instance, the iron here is worked to sustain 60,000 pounds to the Square inch, while the strength required is but 10,000 to the square inch. Other Works. The Diamond Steel Works of Messrs. Par! Brother & Co. was the next Pittsburg « ° visited. Our railroad men were greatly inter- ested here with the exhibition of the quality of the steel made by hammering it id and doubling it down in repeated layers -.thout « particle of fracture. Only experts in these matters could appreciate the real excel- Jence of this work, and those of this class in oar party declared that they had never seen any- thing approaching it in any part of the worl. ‘The process of converting iron into steel, the deearbonization in black-lead jars under intense | dea heat, the casting into ingots, and the wonderfal process of hammering, rolling, &c., were all of great interest, and we could lave spent hours here with satisfaction.
