The exhibition of power is always interesting to mankind, we had it here on a Titanic scale in the manner in which immense masses of iron ani steel we handled, cut and mauled by modern machanic appliances. It appears that the legal and political disa- bilities imposed upon Mr. Ackerman by the fourteenth amendment were removed by tle act approved on the lith of December last, in which his name appears with about fifteen hun- dred others. The opposition to him would seem, therefore, not to be based upon strictly legal objections, but rather upon the question of propriety in the President choosing a constitu- tional adviser trom that class, while plenty of men at least equal in ability and reputation to Mr. Ackerman, and without any taint upon their patriotiém, could be had for the place. R. &.,had taken position for the time being as engineer, and had run us over'a decidedly circuitous course among the mountains at the rate of very nearly fifty miles an bow the Bowels of the Earth. At Irwin Station we stopped to visit the Westmorland Coal Mines. These mines are of the ordinary character of the bituminous coal mines in the hills m the vicinity of Pittsburg and were selected for inspection mainly on ac- count ef their ease of access from the railroad. A steam car ran us up the heavy incline to the mouth of the mines, when we took awule train, consisting of coal cars and other low-hung vehicles, drawn by mules, and passed entirely {through the mountain, a distance of about a mile, emerging at a point on the other side, where the coal is delivered from a plat- form directly into cars to be taken to market. Each excursionist was provided with a tin lamp affording a flaring «moky blaze and it required some study to manage the lights and keep heads and elbows out of harms way in the narrow passage, which was, perhaps, five and one-half feet high, and of a width to barely acccommodate our vehicles. Fun and discomfort were about equal, or rather the fun, astrequently happens, was created by the dis- comforts. A lank, preacher-editor from Geor- gia, whose immense length of limb was supple- mented by one of the tallest stove-pipe hats ever seen off the stage, came to grief more than Once in the passage, as did also the venerable tral, Mr. Hollins, who had donned an immense new silk hat to do honor to the trip. Spotswood- Luck and other little jokers of the four-feet-ten persuasion of course were delighted. At the mouth of the mine where the coal is shipped, there is an immense pile of slack coal, or screenings, which so far have not been made avaitable, though various experiments have been made to manufacture them into brick- shaped lumps for fuel, or to use the screenings in the manufacture of glass. A Pittsbarg glass factory has spent about $150,000 in experimenting to utilize the screenings but an insuperable difficulty has been, thus far, in the impossibility of regulating the intense heat made by their use. The fuel-brick experi- ment bas been more successful, but has failed pecuniarily from the fact that good coal is so cheap and plentiful hereabout that the best lump coal can be supplied at the house for eight cents per bushel. The day will speedily come, however, when the screenings will be made available. Asone of the coal-men remarked, there is a fortune in those immense piles of screenings lying at every pit-mouth; and the way to realize it will be speedily bit upon by some inventive Yankee. c. 5.
