EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District WASHINGTON CITY: WEDPNESDAY............Jame 15, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. _| - Pursone leaving the city for the summer can have Tue STaR mailed to their address by | ordering the same at the o‘fice. Terms 50 cents per month. +202. ‘There is, we bear, a strong probability that the Finance Committee of the Senate wil! bring in @ measure of their own instead of reporting . for the action of their body the combined tax ‘and tariff bill which passed the House a ago. This is manifestly the proper course to pursue. The action of the House in strik- img out the clause taxing the gross receipts of railway companies—thus donating about $7.000,000 to those corporations which ought to go into the national treasury—was such as to make the members of that body liable to the charge of being too much under the influence of the railway lobby. The Senate cannot afford to lay itself open to any such imputation. It is due to itself and to the country that it should estore the missing clause, and insist to the last on its No tax can be collected easier, and none is felt less by the people. --202- Ta Mrrnorotira® Brancu Kattroap.— J. L. Kandolph, Esq., Chief Engineer of the | Baltimore and Vhio Kailroad Company, arrived in this city this morning. He has been ir.- structed by President J. W. Garrett of that com- pany, to go over the entire line of the Metro- | politan Branch of their road from this city to the Point of Rocks, with the view of putting the | Work in such a condition as to have it completed Within the next twelve months if possible. The contracts are to be awarded ina day or two for portions of the road not heretofore contracted for, and every thing looks promising for a vigor- ons prosecution of the work. Mr. Randolph will start over the line at once. ss A most conclusive argument in favor of wooden pavements—if one be needed at this late day—is furnished by the experience of 6th Avenue, in New York. Since the paving of that thoroughfare below 59th street with wood, it is noticeable that most of the tine equipages turn off from 5th Avenue to pass over it, while the value of lots fronting on it have advanced ™ value an average of $3,000 each. The same results, bat in even a more marked degree, would follow the proper paving of Pennsylvania avenue, in this city. ‘The opponents of Hon. Leonard Myers, one o} the faithtul and energetic Representatives in Congress from Philadelphia, have adopted the plan of printing in circular form the exploded cadetship charges against that gentleman, and shipping it under the door of every house in his district. This may be a very eifectual mode of electioneering, but if a more despicable ene has ever been devised we have yet to hear of it. Tre Breiat or Mr. Dickens. _We learn by the cable that at six o’cloek yesterday morn- ing the remains of Charles Dickens were con- veyed from his late residence at Gadshill by train to Charing Cross Station, where they | were met by a plain hearse, without the usual English trappings, and three Plain coaches. In the first coach were placed the children of the deceased, Charles and Harry Dickens, Miss Dickens, and Mrs. Charles Col- lins. In the second were Miss Hogarth, sister- in-law, and Mrs. Austen, sister of Mr. Dickens, | Mr. Charles Dickens, Jr., and John Forster. in | the third coach were Frank Beard, Charles Collins, Mr. Owery, Wilkie Collins, and Ed- mund Dickens. The entire party were attired in deep but simple mourning, without bands or searfs. ‘There was no crowd at Charing Cross Station, and the procession was driven at once to West- minster Abbey, where the remains were re- ceived by Dean Stanley and other officials, and placed im the “ Poet's Corner,” at the foot of Handel and at the head of Sheridan, with Macaulay and Cumberland on either side. The | usual tiowers were strewn upon the bier. Dean ‘Stanley read the burial service, when the coffin | was deposited fn its final resting-place, and the funeralof Charles Dickens was ended. Upon the coffin-plate were inscribed the words: “ Charles Dickens. Born February 7th, 1312. Died June 9th, 1670." It is stated that thousands of citizens crowded | the Abbey during the day to look upon the spot where the great novelist sleeps; and we may add, that of all the tombs of England’s great men, none will be visited oftener or gazed upon with more tender reverence—during this gen- ration, at least,—than that of Charles Dickens. At theelection in Baltimore yesterday only 5.013 votes were polled in favor, and 62) against the ordinance for the endorsement by the city of Baltimore of the bonds of the Maryland Central Railroad Company to the amount of $600,000. oe From Shillington we ha ‘ut Yourself in His Place,” Charles Reade’s new novel, com- plete. see. &7 New Urleans wants a foundiing hospital. hector Woodruff, of the Little Roek (Ark.) a ving retiected on his county courtin in bis a oak oem pet inl for maton.
