Terms 50 cents per month. +<ee-—___ After years of that hope deferred that maketh the heart sick, our city has reason now, we think, te look to the early completion of one if not two of the important railroad connec- tions promised us with the North and West. ‘The operations on the line of the Baltimore and Potomac road at last begin to look something like business; and the work on that still more important road, the Metropolitan road, con- necting Washington directly with the West, has now reached astage where its completion within a few months ms a matter assured. The work has been progressing steadily at the heav- iest points on the line, and has now been re- sumed at this end, and will be prosecuted vigor- ous ert Murray, has commenced work at the point reached when operations were suspended by reason of Mayor Bowen’s raid upon the line. In the early stage of bis contest with the railroad company Mr. Bowen undoubtedly had the mpathy of this community, in the belief that his motive was to protect the interests of the city; but it soon became apparent that other motives were at the bottom of the vindictive opposition made by him against the operations of the company d when it was found that this petty warfare and protracted litigation only served fo benefit the lawyers and delay the con- struction of this important work, a general feel- ing of dissatisfaction grew up, which had un- doubtediy considerable to do with Mr. Bowen’s defeat on Monday last. We trust, now that Mr. Garrett can have no excuse in the obstacles thrown in his way by Mr. Bowen, that the work will proceed without | pause to its completion. Such, we hear, is the full atention of the pip aman The condition | of the work is about as f : On about one- fourth (over eleven miles) ia ‘the road to the Point of Rocks the track is,down. All the heavy work (excavating) on tl rest of the line me, and contracts on eleven sections of the lighter work will soon be finished. A large force is at work at Monocacy river getting out stone, and at all points of the route we learn that the work is being pressed with the vigor | characteristic of Mr. Garrett's operatious when | he sets about a thing in earnest. ‘The Metre -politan road will andoubtedly be in full operation by the time the Conneltsville and Pittsburg road, of which it is @ link, om pleted, and then Washington city will have the benefit of greatly shortened connections with the West, by the way of the Baltimore and Ohio road. and the Northwest by the Pittsburg route, and will also reap the great advantages to be derived from tapping the rich valleys of Maryland and Virginia, and of opening up a portion of has only necded railroad facilities to put it on the advanced path of agricultual and manuface turing progress. It Mr. Garrett will only go ahead and give us this important road, he will soften down the entertained against him here amazingly; he will follow it up by relieving us from discriminations in faroref Baltimore, we may come in time to vote him a public benefactor. On the principle that half a loaf is better than no bread, we suppose the country ought to feel grateful over the prospect that the income tax law is not to be perpetuated inthe fulness of its present iniquities. And we do not doubt it will be grateful in a degree proportioned to the | measure of relief afforded. But this mitigated thankfulness is in danger of extinction from the | Proposition now before Congress to abolish the | {ax OM the gross receipts of rasiroad companies. \ ‘Tuts scheme stmpty monstrous. The revenue now derived from that source, some $7,000,000 | in amount, comes from the receipts from pas- senger travel alone; but if the tax were re- moved, does any person suppose that a traveler Will be able to ride any cheaper on a single railroad in the United States? Not one far- thing. The proposition is, in plain language, nothing but a plan to tran fer so mach money from the public treasury to that of rich and | gtasping monopolies, without a particle of — efit or semblance of beneiit to an overburden and long-suffering people. ‘This is a little too bald. It seven million dol- lars can be spared from the yearly revenues of the nation, as we doubt not it well can be, why not take it from the tax now laid on sugar, coffee and tea, which can no longer be classed as luxuries, but are absolute necessities of the laboring man and woman, instead of making an outright present of that vast sum to soulless corporations that get everything and give nothing in return? Our national legislators should reflect long and well before taking a step at once so foolish and so wicked as doing this thing. Having done it, they would go before their hard-working con- stituents with heavy odds against their re- élection, and over their defeat they will find no one to drop a tear. —-200- An incidental question of considerable lite- Tary interest will arise in the minds of most of the reading public in connection with the death of Mr. Dickens. That is, whether his last work, A large force, under the direction of Rob- | | weeks ago on the country north of Washington that | | the feree which the Spaniards say captured it | The Baltimore American has something to say about the abuse by Tae Star and Tie R-publi- con “of gentlemen non-residents of Washing- ton who have had nothing to do with the elec- | tion troublesthere.” Th> American has showns | degree of misinformation in regard to our “elec- | tion troubles” hardly cre litable to a paper pub- | lished within forty miles of us,and the Wash- ington papers who have been in the thick of the fight will prefer to receive admonitions from some better qualified authority. Indigestion is generally accempanied by constipation, and the gentle cathartic operation of the Bitters is no less important in cases of this kind than its tonic effect upon the stomach and tue bilivry gland, Beauty of person as well as health depends in no small degree upon the regularity of the excretive functions.
