EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District | CROSBY 8. HOYES........ Editor. WASHINGTON CITY: ‘THURSDAY........0.-..-. June 2, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. “It wan old saying, aud true asit is old: “Show me the —— you keep. and I will tell who you are.’ Should Mr. Emery be suc- Cessful in the election, @ priests and his policy would, necessart by sur- Founding intivences.” a Chvenacle ‘Just so. Mr. Emery ts surrounded by our best citizens, by our business men in a body, by men known and respected for their integrity, by men of all party shades, and by staunch old- line Republicans, white and colored, of the standing of Lewis Clephane, Frederick Bos- well, Z. C. Robbins, John F. Cook, H. A. Hall, Gen. N. P. Chipman, James Kelly, A. 8. Tay- lor, Henry Johnson, A. P. Fardon, Alfred Jones, Alfred Day, Cornelius Clark, A. G. Hall, W. J. Murtagh, H. Kilbourn, A. RK. Shepherd, Stephen Prentiss, David Fisher, @. A. Hall, G. H. Plant, J. R. Elvars, James Hayes, J. W. Freeman, George Boston, J. H. Crane, William Dixon, J. H. Crossman, Geo. W. Hatten, B. Sev- erson, B. McCoy, Palmer Briscoe, W. F. Wi lace, G. W. Linville, C. H. Holden, J. B. Arri- son, Joba Grinder, L. B. 8. Miller, C. M. Bar- ton, W.H. Champion, Cary W. White, R. A. Simms, S. 5S. Riley, F. T. Gaines, L. G Hine, Dr. Wm. Boyd, C. S. Bates, W. C. Bamberger, J. A. Pierce, Wm. Wilson, G. W. Goodall, T. T. Fowler, Frank Reeside, W. A. Taliafero, Peter Hepburn, and the host of other staunch original Kepublicans who now take their stand under the banner of reform. Mr. Emery can be safely left in such company as this. The influences surrounding him will be healthy, politically, morally and every way. How about Mr. Bowen ? What company does he keep? Can @ single business man in thi, city be found in bis ranks? Is there a single original Republican to be found supporting him? Not one. On the contrary, he has alienated all but « few eleventh-hour, bread-and-batter Ke- publicans, and has drawn about him for his intimates a wonderful conglomerate of ex-rebels, copperheads, defaulters, gamblers, cont act- brokers, penitentiary convicts, and all the worst elements of society that just as naturally gather about a corrupt municipal administration as buzzards do about a carcass. In place of the sound, long-tried Republicans who support Mr. Emery, we find Mr. Bowen's main supporters to be ex-rebels like Himber, Jo. Williams, Englisn, J. Marshall Hanna, Donegan, &e. Sc. &c. &c.; such copperheads and negro-haters as Mike Daftey, McKenna, Jim Ryan, A. Gleason, and the rest of them. In place of the entire business commanity, and the great body of our most esteemed citizens of all classes who support Mr. Emery, we have rallying to the standard of Mr. Bowen, and selected by him as his chosen company, such persons as Contract-broker Cook, Gambler Morse, Defaulter Baker, Defaulter Peck, Pent- tentiary convicts Tom Bowie and Sorrel, and the long line of lesser notorieties. “Show me the com; a keep and t tell who you are” Py 7° = A Daniel come to judgment! Should Mr. Bowen be elected “‘his principles And his policy would necessarily be shaped by surrounding influences.” Yea, a Daniel come to judgment! SEARS ie The Registration. ‘The following is the correct number of regis. tered voters in this city, as taken from the offi- cial records of the Board of Registration: Fonrth Ward.... Fifth Ward.. Sixth Ward... Seventh War No record was made by the judges of the respective number of white and colored reg- istering, but an unofficial tally made by some of the challengers makes the falling off in the white and colored vote about equal; that of the whites being somewhat the less of the two. The | tally kept of the registration by the challengers gives Emery a majority of not less than 5,400, supposing all the Emery men who regis tered vote, and this they are pretty sure ic do. No amount of cheating by the Bowen men can overcome this large majority; and in fact they Bnd the penalties for fraud so serious, as pushed home on them by the Reform Vigilance Com- mittee that they are pretty thoroughly cowed. It is a noticeable fact that every case of frand sn illegal registration has been traced home to ithe Bowen ring. In not a single instance has Such a charge been made against the Emery qpen. Mayor Bowen's exhibit of the condition of ine corporation finances sent to the Senate com- mittee is a rich showing of bogus assets. We trust that the committee will not rest content with Bowen's data, for it will be easy to demon- Strate that there is not a reliable figure in his whole statement. Let other witnesses baving knowledge of corporation affairs be summoned; the City Collector, and the City Register for in-tance, whe are necessarily posted in regard to the finaneial condition of tue city. Mr. Bowen is on trial, and his testimony is that of a defendant ins case on his own behalf. But if the corporation has a hundredth part of the assets put down for it by Mr. Bowen, te proves himself the most incompetent of officials that Le Ca”Xot realize a dollar upon them; that his dishonored cheeks are afloat to the extent of nearly $294,000, that the corporation account with the First National Bank has been over- drawn nearly $200,000 more; that from $200,000 to £300,000 of certificates of indebtedness ie sued by ward commissioners are afloat in the street, and a featipg debt of more than half @ million with a funded debt of $1,410,824.33. And that at the same time the corporation Ia- borers have not been paid for months and that @very scrap of corporation property, even to the chairs im the Mayor's office, is under levy to Satisfy executions obtained by hungry corpora- tion creditors. Let the Senate Committee, before making up their judgment on Mr. Bowen's rose colored statements, listen to the story ot the poor Iabor- ers who are selling their ward scrip for 30 per Ccut. shave to the pawn-brokers. —___ +202 —___ ‘The Chicago Tribune aptly remarks concern ing Jeremiah Black’sstandereus intimation that Mr. Stanton went tnto Mr. Limcoln’s Cabinet in consideration of a bribe, that ‘“‘the fact that Br. Stanton, after six years’ exercise of the BTeatest powers ever put forth bya War Minister, atied from overwork and in poverty ts asufficient uuswer to the vulgar slanders of one who lacks @ven the intellect to perceive how great an ‘honor it is to as small a manas Jerry Black that dhe was once succeeded in office by such a man ms Stanton. He ought to feel the same pride over the incident as the inseet that crosses the field of Lord Rosse’s telescope, when the next object to follow him is the ptanet Jupiter.” ‘The Chesapeake and Obie Canal troubles have been renewed by the recent $00,000 to Mesers. McKaig and Walsh, of Cum- perland, by a jury of citizens of milleged damages to their Witch to straighten the line of the soe —____ Elsewhere will be found the admirable direc- tions of Majer Kiehards to his force tor their guidance on electionday. Full provisions have been made for ensuring to every voter the right to cast his ballot without hindrance, and it is Bow quite certain that the election will be one wf the quictest and most orderly ever held in this city. -s0-- The Infallibility debate continues animated in the Ecumenical Council, and will probably Be concluded about the end of July. & 1 GO TO THE MASONIC HALL TONIGHT and enjoy the pleasant scene there iy. | rait. Three conditions aré absolutely essential to health, viz: @ good appetite, easy digestion, and the ability to sleep soundly. Seven-eighths of the many thousands who suffer from indisposition, yet do not labor un- der serious disease, complain that they ‘can't eat,” that their stomachs are “out of order,” or thét they “don't sleep well.” Wor this class of ailmests few persons think of calling in a physicisn. Nor is it necessary. inasmuch as @ courseof Houstetter’s Bit ters will certainly relieve the derangements of the stomach, the liver, and the nervous system, from which want of appetite, indigestion and slaepleas- ness arise.
