EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY... eovse-ee May 27, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. Epttor or Star—Sir: In «statement by Max Haselbach, published 1 STAR, a reference made to which demands some notice from me. Mr. says:—“Mr. Bowen to reach other class of readers than bene reached by his ‘Now Era edited Mr. Martin = absent from the city, and will wot return for some weeks, and I am of course unable to say what propositions ny or may not bi Been made to him, or accepted by him; but, in justice to the proprietor, allow me to state most emphatically that the New Zra has accepted no proposition to support Mr. Bawen. My position in connection withe@he paper is such that all moneys bel to it must pass through my hands, and I ire to state most unequivocally that the New Bra has not receive one dollar from any one, directly or indirectty, totntucnce ite course in regard to the municipal pS TS TE I have to say is been diddied oat of his money, and I hope the transaction wi exposed. TH Hawes il be on behalf of proprietors of New Era. The above communication from Mr. Hawes presents a curious subject of inquiry. It has been stated in the papers heretofore with great positiveness that Mr. Sella Martin, editor of the New Era, had, asa consideration for sup- porting Mr. Bowen, reteived the privilege of farming out certain contracts, and that he bad recetved quite a sam froma man named Stewart for a job of this sort. Max Has selbach, in his statement, testifies that Mayor Bowen made a bargain with Sella Mart . for the latter to edit the Zra in his behalf. Now Mr. Hawes—and we understand that he is a thoroughly reliable gentleman—stat2s most emphatically that the Vee Era has not received one dollar, directly or indirectly, for th port of Mr. Bowen, and that if any money has been paid for such parpose, “that some office- holder has been diddied out of his money.” Now the question is who got the money? If there is a diddier in the case, who is he, and where is he? It is rather hard on Mr. Bowen if be, in his somewhat extensive newspaper pur- chases to secure his re-election, should tind that he has been dealing with irresponsible parties rot able to make delivery of the goods. Tom Florence has utterly failed to give him the promised democratic candidate; and now ii would seem that oer worthy Mayor has been chiseled by somebody in his fancied parcha of the support of the Bra. ‘The five hundred dollars given to Tom Flor- ence to support him, biographically, and picto- Tially im the Sunday Gazese proved a wretched investment, because. as om avers, the Emery men got his engraver drank, so that he turned outench a “Rogucs’ Gallery” looting piciure of Bowen that it con'd not be used. The same bad luck has followed the Bowen-Fiorence “Democrat” venture. where Tom, undertaking to fil! out his contract to supply a democratic candidate, with picture to match, at short no- tice, bas been obliged to use an old woed cat that everybody recognizes as an undoubt-1 Dkeness of Dan Sickles. Bowen's disgraceful hand-bill publication has done him so much harm that he very properly tries to escape any responsibility for it; but, as shown by the Hasselbach deposition, he will Bave to shoulder the odium. Altogether, Mr. Bowen is not a success as a newspaper strategist. ——-.ee--__ The Chronicle of this morning raports Mr. George T. Downing as making ths remarkable statement at the Sixth Ward Bowen meeting Inst night : “There was a conspiracy in this city ty starve out colored me” by reducing the value o: the city | bonds; but he was happy t) say that there was a perty of gentlemen in the Ca: itol whe int aded to farvi-f the money to kecy the ev. lit of the city up.” Mr. Downing is not held in the hi-h-st esti- mation by the colored people of Washingion, | and bis word is not likely to mislead them. His silly lie as to the cause of the city’s deplor- | Able Buancial condition meods no auvwer, but if | he eam be believed in the other part of his alle gation that there are gentlemen at the Capitol | prepared to pay off the Corporation creditoas | then is Downing worthy of attention. Down- ing has the information. Downing knows. Downing Will bave callers. We dare say that Downing wii. be the most sought-for individual in the city within fWenty-four hours, or as c50n asthe new: is circulated. Now, the question is, + Downing reliable ? a Bowszy’s Five Parexs, “Two Datry.”— Still another campaign paper is announced this morning as having been started in the interest of Mayor Bowen,—thix one to be printed in the German language. These personal organs cost ‘a great deal of money, a+ Mr. Hasselbach’s state- ment published yesterday shows; but the money wrung from the people in the shape of taxes appears to be con<idered lawful prize by these municipal harpies, and we suppose it may 3s ‘well be spent m this way as any other. And let them pluck the goose while they can. Their time is growing short. 200+ Tue Weekty Stam, now on our counter and in wrappers ready for the mails, contains «Lady McNamara’s Story,”"—to be read at mid- pight; the great Emery ratification meeting; Printing Burea Charge of ro ok’s) Six Hundred; the Fenian raid; the ite Gatation; Municipal Politics everybody mery except corporation panera, the Proc of Congress; Railroad Matters; ty News; W: ‘News and: Gossips the Co People; Courts; the a Creful Items of Domestic Econom: ay Pe Sketches, De; ntal and Local News; A, cultural and Housekeeping aon dome and latest Te Dispatches from of ‘the world. ‘Tux Censvts—General Walker, Superinten- dent of the Census, has prepared the sehedules for taking the same under the act of May 23d, reco.
