| FORTY-FIRST CONGRESS. a Pee THE FENIAN Rarp. -} — INVASION OF CANADA. le in * Skirmish—_Defeat of the « gr of United cers— of General @'Neil— Extent of the sions the From the dispatches received here from ; vafious points, it would appear that at least ten to tifteen thousand men were being concen- trated for the latest Fenian advance on Canada, | which seems to have met a check yesterday, by | the defeat, near Franklin, just over the line, of the vanguard, under the command of the Fe- nian leader, Gen. "Neil, who was subsequently arrested by the United States authorities. The New York papers of last evening say that at least 8,000 men left that city. The chief move- ment appears to bave been directed against | ‘Canada Fast, from two principal pointe— Ma- | Jone, in Franklin coanty, New York, west of Lake Champlain; and St. Alban’s, in Franklin county, Vermont, on the east ot that lake—each within short marching distance of the Canadian frontier. Malone is somewhat over two hundred miles north of Albany, and St Alban’s about | two hundred and nty miles northwest of | Boston. The princ’ inovement yesterday ‘was from St. Alban’s. A SPEECH. Athalt-past eleven o' clock yesterday morning, the Fenions, an had been for several hoar; | busy f wz their arms and otherwise | getting om faction at Hubbard's Corner, a half mile beyond Franklin, took ap their line of march, and when they arrived near the house of Alvah Richards, about twenty rods this side of the border, halted, and Genera O'Neill made the followin: ig speech: i—Soidiers: ‘This is the advance guard of the Irieh-Amsri- ean army for the liberation of Ireland from the yoke of oppression. For your own country you now enter that of theenemy. The eres of your ‘wountry are npon you. Forward, march.” ‘The advance company was from, Burlington, and was commanded by Captain W: Of that city. At the conclusion of Gen. O'Neill's he lifted his hat and replied:—“Gene- ral: | am proad that Vermont has the honor of leading this advance. Ireland may depend up- on us todo our duty.” ‘A PIOHT. ‘The advance was then resumed by flank in the open road, and as €apt. Cronan’s company passe! Richards’ House, aud were descending a ittle hill towards the lin line, they were mg by a sharp volley trom some Canadian troo; ¥ position been concealed. The ‘was instantly returned by Capt. Cronan’s men, and quite shatp fire was kept up for somé time. The Canadians were posted behind rocks and trees, and bad, of course, the advantage of the “boys in green.” It is reported that one of the Fenians was killed and Captain Cronan ‘wounded inthe thigh. The skirmish was wit- | nessed by a number of citizens. United States Marshal Foster and Deputy Marshal Failey took a commanding position part of the he way UP the hill, and were under fire all the ti AN ARREST. At about 2o’clock, when General O’Neill had gone to the right of his command, , General Fos- ter Lad bis close ‘near Hon, and immediately arrested Genoral O'Relli by virtue of the Pi resident’ ‘s proclamation. The | General said he refused to be arrested, and he | had a force which he would use for nis protec- tion. The United States Marshal seing a lot of Fenians near at hand threw open the carriage Movement —| door, and with the help of Failey thrust the Fe- Bian leader on the back seat. The officials leaped into their seats and left in hot haste. ‘The General arrived at the Weeden House, in St. Albans, at 4o'clock. ONeill was soon after arraigneé before United States Commissioner Jacols M. Smaliey, for violation of the neutral- | ity laws He waived an examination, and in | default of 220,000 bail was taken to Burlington in the evening to be committed. DEMORALIZATION. A later dispatch from St. Albans says: “The arrest of Gen. O'Neill has fallen like a wet blanket on the Fenians, and reports from the front this evening say they are badly demorai- ized. ‘The Fenians tought well, but it is evident they were not reinforced as they expected. ‘There cannot beat the outside, at and about the place where the skirmish took place, more | than 40 men, whereas ammunition for four times that number had been provided.
