There were no regu- lar challengers, although fiiends of the various Prospeetive ward candidates seemed to be moving about lively. Before the opening of the pol's*there was a large crowd waiting, and kad the judges sat even till 9 o’clock p. m. they would bave been kept busily at work. As it was 551 mames were registered (319 white and 232 col- cored) against the first day’s registration last year of 554 (304 white and 20 colored.) This. Hall was then calied for and said that he felt a profound interest in the prosperity of this city, and all must unite to rid the city of one who had defrauded the people ont of their taxes and rights. (Applause. The speaker gave a history of Mr. Emery during his resi- nee in this city, and assured his hearers that under the leadershipof Mathew G. Emery cor- ruption and traud would be unknown in our municipal affairs. Mr. Emery, as a business man, had a reputation above bi chs and he is respected by our entire popalation, standin ashe does without spot or blemish.
