There are, no doubt, numbers of estimable ‘Women who protest in a quiet way against the female suffrage business, but they will pretty likely share the fate of respectable male hank- ets on election day when they come in collision with the hurrah boys. The hurrah girls will most likely win. ‘Two Territories (Wyoming and Utah) have Biready adopted woman suffrage. Kansas has adopted it in part, and will soon fally, and the ‘Constitutional Convention of Illinois has agreed. Dy a vote of 40 to 21 to submit the question toa Special vote of the people. Senator Lewis, Franklin Stearns, Charles H. Porter, Lewis McKenzie, James H. Platte, George W. Booker, Joseph M. Humphreys, Lewis Lindsay, ‘HH. L. Wigand, and others, representing the va- rious shades of Republicanism in the State, Were present, and all seemed anxious to har- monize. The result of this desire was shown yesterday, when the conference unanimously adopted a platform declaring themsetves in fa- vor of an immediate enforcement of the four- teenth and fifteenth amendments to the consti- tution; universal amnesty; pablic education at public expense; the encouragement of internal improvements; au honest entorcement of the mew State constitution, and a hearty support of President Grant’s administration. Resolutions were introduced denouncing Gevernor Walker, Dut they were voted down and a substitute ‘adopted “ that this body have no confidence in the alleged Republicanism of the Governor of Virginia, but do not consider it worth while to Characterize his political course.”” —— Is Tax WATER To ne CT Orr ?—A commu- nication from Col. T. B. Samo, Engineer in ‘Charge of the Washington Aqueduct, was read in the Georgetown City Councils last evening, in which that officer says :—“ It is possible that Doth Georgetown and Washington may be en- tirely deprived of Potomac water, as the appro- Priation tor supefintendence and repairs of the Washington Aqueduct is completely ex- hausted.” We learn that the House Committee on Appropriations have cut down the estimates for the necessary expenses (which were calcu- dated on the basis of the closest economy pos- sible) very congiderably, and have prohibited @ny excess of Expenditure beyond the reduced appropriation. If Congress insists upon this reduction and restriction, it is not easy to see how the water supply can be kept up. eee “Floors to let™ is sign that may now be seen in many parts of New York city to an extent xever before known, and upon houses which landlords would never at any previous time have rented in that way. There is a hint here ‘that should not be lost on Washington landlords. There is no place in the country where houses divided in this manner would find so many and good tenants as here. It is true, we have few Or no houses at present adapted to this style of diving; but a little ingenious carpentry would S000 work wonders in that direction. Or better ‘Still, some of our large builders should try the experiment of putting up a block or two of houses expressly arranged for this style of life, Which secures the comforts of housekeeping on B moderate scale, without the expense of keep- ing up & complete establishment as ordinarily planned. We are sure they would find profit in at. a +20. — Weare glad to hear that Mr. John Purdy, hose giass manufactary was destroyed lately by Gre, proposes to rebtild the works immedi- @tely, and to construct them of fire-proof ma- ‘terial. Mr. Purdy, in a quiet, unpretending ‘way, was doing excellent pioneer work in start- ing manufacturing operations here. Washing- ton will enter upon its true career of prosperity ‘when others of our capitalists commence the Same good work of fostering and building up manufacturing enterprises here.
