SENATE—After our report closed— The Northern Pacific railroad bill wa dis- ‘Cusced until six o’clock p. m., when the Senate adjourned. HOUSE—After our report closea— PERSONAL EXPLANATION. My. Kelley (Pa.) rose to a personal explana- tion, and said that when the Sypher election case “as under consideration, one of his es (Mr. Randall) bad informed him that Mr. fog ets, of Ark., stated that he (Mr. Kelley) bad an- nounced his purpose of voting for Mr. Sypher, because it would secure a: er vote for the iron interest of Pecneylvania. He was not ca- le of entering into any sort of agreement of kind for a vote for any measure. Mr. Kandall said that when he was told that his colleague had made a statement as above, he Went to him,and asked him abont it, stating the authority. Mr. Kelley denied the imputa- tion, but be (Mr. Kandali) wanted to call the attention of the House and of the country to the Zact that all the Kepublican members from Pennsylvania, except Mr. Scofield, had voted on all questions in favor of Mr. Spyher’s side of case Messrs. Myers and O'Neill (Pa.) spurned the imputat contained in this statement Mr K y said be did not know what Mr. Sypher’s views were on the tariff question, and therefore it was not possible that he could have been influenced by any such consideration. He Tose to give a flat denial to the assertion that he had uttered the remarks attributed to him, or any like them. Mr. Rogers (Ark.) said he overheard the gen- tleman say something in regard te Mr. "8 case, and he said it m connection with the tariff. Hemight have been mistaken In his inferences, he construed Mr. Kelley’s langaage just as he (Mr. Kogers) stated it. esers. Orth (Ind.) and Moore (Iil.) corrobo- Yated Mr. Kelley's recollection of the conversa- tion. RECONSTRUCTION OF THE PATENT OFFICE. ‘The regular order of business was then de- manded, and the House resumed the considera- tion of the bill reported by Mr. Jenckes (it. £.) to amend the laws relating to patents, &c. Several amendments were offered and discussed. As it was proposed to transfer copy-right books from the Patent Office to the Congressional Library, Mr. Peters (Me.) offered an amend- sent to increase the salary of the Librarian of ‘Congress to $3.500, which was to. Pending further consideration, the hour ex- pired, and the bill went over. RAN DOMINGO. Mr. Butler made another ineffectual effort fo get in his San Domingo annexation resolu- mn. ‘THE CENSUS BILL. ‘The Senate amendments to the House bill to provide for taking the census were non-con- curred in, and a committee of conference was ordered. THE GkoRGtA BILL. ‘The Senate amendments to the bill for the ad- mission of Georgia were then taken up, and Mr. Butler moved its reference to the Reconstruc- tion Committee. A number of amendments were offered. and also referred, imcinding one prepared by Mr. Bingham providing for an elec- tion of members of the State Legislature and State officers in the fail of 1870, and declaring the State entitled to representation. [This amendment is offered as a substitute for the whole bill.) All the amendments were referred and ordered to be ited. In answer toa ques- tion Mr. Butler ited that he would call the bill up until some time next week. Mr. Trimble (Ky.) was uted a member of the Committee on Pacific Railroads, tofill a Vacancy, and Mr. Van Trump (Ohio) was ap- pointed 4 member of the Post Uftice Committee, also to fill a vacancy. Mr. Kerr (Ind.) offered a resolution directing ‘the Speaker of the House to inform the Gover- nor of Louisiana that a vacancy exists in the first Congressional district of that State; and ponding a vote the House adjourned at 5:12 p. m. ~~ -—___ A FAMILy or Five Persons att Powonep To DeaTH EXcerT One.—By a letter from Hawesville. Ky., we learn that a most terrible calamity befell the tamily of Mr. Hertzoy, living one aud a half miles back of that town, on Thursday last. Mr. Hertzog had purchas:d 2B Quantity of arsenic for the purpose of poison- ing rats. He was thoughtless or imprudent enough to place it in a bottle ina cupboard near another bettle containing bread soda. The next day Mrs Hertzog went to the cupboard to get Some soda to mix into piecrust. She either did not know the arsenic was in the cupboard, or had forgotten about it. At any rate she made the terrible mistake of taking the arsenic and mixing it in her piecrust, instead of the soda. On the same evening one of the pies she had baked was eaten for supper. The family consist- ed of five persons. One of the children, a boy, was absent during the meal. The other four, however, partook of the poisoned pie, and by the next morning every one of them was dead. ‘Their sufferings were dreadful, the poison taking effect ina few minutes after the supper Was concluded. The poor wife discovered her terrible and fatal mistake when it was too late, for, twelve hours later, husband, wife, and two ebtidren had ceased to live. The family were highly esteemed. They formerly resided @ Cannelton, in this State, and had been living in Kentucky about a year—New Albany Ledger - eaten irae Ur oy a BaLLoon.—Prof. Wise, of Lancaster Pa., who was lately in Cumberland, Md., with & party. experimenting in taking instantaneou pictures from balloon, met with a mishap las week. We are afraid it will be found easier to reform than to re-dress.— Punch. 7 Mr. Dickens does not know what nervous- mess means. When asked if he had ever felt fidgety before public cecasions on which he ‘Was to speak, he instantly replied: “Notin the Yeast. The first time I took the chair at a pub- lic dinner I felt as much confidence as if I had Gone the same thing a hundred times before.” &7 Four of the five Chinese printers just ar- vived at San Francisco are ander an engagement te proceed to New York, where it is sald, they will train a number of the most intelligent countrymen in the art. Now, reader, self-abuse, venercal diseases badly cured, and sexual excesses, are all capable of pro- ducing » weakness of the generative organs. The organs of generation, when in perfect health, make the maa. You never hear such men com- plain of being melancholy, of nervousness, of palpi- tation of the heart. ‘They are never afraid they cannot succeed in business; they don’t become sad and discouraged; they are always polite and pleasant im the company of ladies, and look you and them right in the fece—none of your downcast looks or any other meanness about them.
