EVENING STAR. Largest Circalation in the District 1 CROSBY 6. NOYES........Editor: | WASHINGTON OITY: THURSDAY... _Reading Matter on Every Page. Seaapiggealints Yves quantinn 46 corastty sa | ta the action of the Congressional committee in regard to the affairs of the customers of the Safe Deposit Company. In his card, published | im Tae STAR yesterday, the secretary states that “there was no inspection of the books or business of the company made, or attempted to Le made, nor was such a thing even hinted atby the chairman,” but on the other hand, a morn- ing cotemporary alleges that it has“ indisputa- | ble authority for the statement that the index book, at least, was taken to the committee- room, and it was examined by the committee;” and further, that a canceled check was exhib- ited, which tended to show that business rela- Uons had, at one time, existed between the coi pany and at least one of its customers—a prom- iment professional gentleman of this city. The condition of things which this contro- versy seems to establish is anything but credit- able either to the congressional committee or the Safe Deposit Company. Nor is it satisfac- tory to the public. If the books and affairs of an institution established solely for the safe keeping of valuables are to be laid open at the call of any person, and the contidential relations which exist between it and the public exposed even in the slightest degree, its usefulness is well nigh destroyed. Nor is the committee which undertakes such inquisitorial proceed- ings, except in a grave public emergency, placed in a much better attitude before the public. During the continuance of the war, when the national life was to be protected at any cost, the People could tolerate pretty loose sloshing | around on the part of investigating committees | and detectives, but that day has gone by. The necessity for arbitrary power has passed away. The —a of it should be buried ate. — Ithas bees reserved for a church in | Robraska to combine the possibility of protit with benevo- lence, after a fashion which throws in the shade | the rafting church fairs in vogue in this part of | the country. To cancel the mortgage debt of the churel, non-interest bearing bonds in sums of $100 have been put upon the market, payable in ten years, and as a means of securing rapid subscriptions, two eomparatively large prizes, to be awarded by lot in the same fashion, are offered, the one a £2.00 United States bond, and the other a bond of half that amount. The inducement for the good Christians of therefore the chance of getting their money back with interest at the father steep rate of two thousand per cevt., or two hundred per cent. per avnum. oe ‘The legislative investigation as to the worki ng Of the order of St. Crispin in Ma | sachusetts 1s | still im progress.
