EVENING STAR. Largest Circalation in the District * WASHINGTON OITY: Reading Matter on Every Page. Tux Consgcticut ELection—The annual State election in Connecticut occurs on Mon- day. April 4. The following are the tickets which have been put in nomination : Gow wana em M1. 3 E. English. ernor.... d = l. jas. E. be Lieut. Gov. Marts ©, Tick Pond. Compt'r.... Jas. W. Mensing. Seth 3. Logan. In addition to the above, a new Legislature is to be chosen, to consist of twenty-one Senators and two hundred and thirty-eight members of the lower House. The present Senate consist; of fourteen Republicans and seven Democrats, and the House of one hundred and thirty Ke- publicans and one hundred and eight Demo- crats. The State administration is Republican, having been elected last fall by majorities ranging from 411 on Governor to 2,200 0n other candidates. The contest for Governor was be- tween the same candidates last vear as now,and Was very active and close. The Democrats have shown no great activity in the present canvass- but have taken some heart lately from the fact that by the failure to promulgate the Fifteenth Amend ment in season for the election, the Ke, publican party cannot avail themselves of the colored vote of the State. There seems to be no reasonable doubt, however, that the Republican Party will succeed by as large a majority at least, as on last year. : seee- ‘The spring trade in New York (wholesale) has thus far not been satisfactory, and this fact is | explained on the ground that the country buy- | ers, in expectation of a sudden return of specie payments, are making only small purchases for their immediate wants. The idea that, in some way hoped for but not explainable on any legiti- mate theory, a full return to a specie basis may happen at almost any moment, has wrought a good deal of mischief to business. It is quite cer- tain that we shall not reach the specie standard FIBANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Government Secarities. Wasurneton, March 26, 1810—Jay Cooke & = pe . eo ‘YoRE—yinet “13x "eae dne sy, yes. 08%, Fontorties vncecsloin Lewis Johnson & Co. quote stocks and bonds in home and markets as follows: New Yorg, M. 26.—First Board—U. 8. 6's, lg 1362, b> ag 109%; ay new ed except by the action of regular monetary laws; | T and which, though working surely, work slewly. | In the meantime trade is accommodating itself | everywhere to the fall in gold, and the resulting | fall im raw materials and goods. It will ane | been noticed, by our advertising columns, that | the dealers in this city have very generally and | very promptly marked down their prices to the lowest standard calied for by the gold quota- | tions. In view of the probabilities that gold in its fluctuations will rise considerably again, cus- | tomers here are sensibly taking advantage of the current low prices, and most of our dry | goods and other dealers seem to be doing a pretty | brisk spring business. = ‘Those who favor the re-enactment of the in- come tax law get very little encouragement from Horace Greeley. In speaking of it, that eminent publicist says: “We regard it as the | most unequal, unfair, inquisitorial, perjury- | provoking tax ever imposed, and hope it may not be renewed.” In spite of the numerously-signed remon- strances against it which are daily received from every quarter, it is still given out that the Secretary of the Treasury, the Commissioner of Internal Revenue, and the Ways and Means Committee are all in favor of the re-enactment of the law, though in a moditied torm—such as slightly reducing the rate now charged, for in- stance; but this assumption can hardly be well founded. But even if it is, it will not be likely to hold good for a great while. The danger of electing a Democratic Congress next fall will probably bring about a change of opinion be- fore the close of the session. And a refusal to materially reduce taxation this year means 3 that. A pretty lenient divorce law has been intro- | @uced in the Massachusetts Legislature, and seems, thus far, to eucounter no opposition, having passed the House almost unanimously. It makes separation for five years, even by mu- | tual agreement, a cause of divoree, if the parties were living in the State all the time; permitaa | divorce for desertion after three years instead of | five; leaves both parties to a divorce free to marry again; and authorizes the court to @arry into effect any arrangements regarding property that may have been agreed upon by divorced couples. Hitherto in that State adultery and utter desertion for five consecutive years have | been deemed necessary for a divorce, and the offending party has not been allowed to marry | again without the special permission of the Su- | Preme Court. One effect of its passage will be doubtless to restrain the rather extensive emi- gration of badly yoked couples from the Bay State to Imdiana to get the benefit of the lement divorce laws of that State. The Mobi le Register has « bilious article in favor of redeeming Alabama from the Radi- cals. Itsays there are only two “methods by which a conquered people can regain their sov- ereignty, and they are both before us for a choice. They are the ballot and the sword. No one thinks of the last now—the time is not yet ripe for it. But the other is within our reach, a per- fectly practicable as well as peaceful and lawful weapon.” Does the Register propose to inaugu- rate another rebellion? The Savannah Republé- | can is equally fierce in its diatribes, and asks the following question: ‘« When, oh! when will the American people drive from power and Visit with a merited punishment the unprinci- | pled, graceless, abandoned, God-defying usurp- | ers, who, day by day, are bringing contempt | wpon the country, uprooting all that is good | and virtuous in the land, and forging chains for | themselves and their children?” | em aaa ‘The Committee on Propositions and Griev- ances of the Virginia House of Delegates have agreed to « report in favor of repealing the act the so-called Southern Associa- ian ar etl ween Orphans, be- A cause of its being a lottery concern, and, as | aed | to be) an exclusive and most love! lemor Mille Pate he S47 Se | a a family, $7433.75. 2°. cea active at Madic. fe or yellow.
