EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District CROSBY S&S. NOYES........E@iter. WASHINGTON CITY: RUESDAY.... --Mareh 8, 1870. “Reading Matter on Evry Page Receptions. The next reception of the Speaker of the House will be on Friday evening, March 18th, from 9 to 11 o’elock. Mra. Blaine’s receptions will be held every Wednesday of the season, between the hours of 2and5 p.m. s20e- Repecep Taxatioy—We have before us a list of more than sixty of the leading Republi- can papers of the country, all of which unite in @ demand for reduced taxation. They repre- sent every section of the United States and all the various elements of the party which placed the present Administration in power, as well, and a large majority of them strongly urge the entire abolishment of the income tax as the best means of accomplishing the demred result. ‘That form of taxation they pronounce the most irouisitorial, corrupting, and unequal yet de- vised, and the one of all others most calculated to produce bed feeling between the people and the Government. 5 So unanimous an expression of opinion from such a faithful reflex of public sentiment and powerful auxiliary as the press can hardly fail to have a controlling influence on Congress, and corresponding legislation may therefore be counted upon with a reasonable degree of conti- derce. Indeed it is understood that a large number of the Republican members of both Houses are already warmly in favor of the mea- sure, believing that they will be defeated at the Polls next fall unless their constituents are in someway relieved from the oppressive burdens under which they now labor. ———__+ee- ‘The New York Tribune of yesterday has a tong and savage article on the proposition to lay down the Stow Foundation Pavement in some of the streets of that city. It character- izes the action of the Councils in the premises 85 a gross outrage, and argues that, from the manner in which it is constructed, the pave- ment in question must prove worthless. Of the motives or the action of the city fathers of New York we can, of course, know nothing; but experience has shown that the pavement referred to is very far from the fail- ure which the Tribune predicts that it must be. A sample of it put down st the mtersection of Pennsylvania avenue and Eleventh street, in this city, nearly two years ago, has so far fully justified the promises of its proprietors and more than met public expectation; and in San Francisco, where it has been used for a mach longer time, and subjected to severe and con- tinuous use, it has proved to be a decided suc- cess. So good an impression has it made here, at any rate, that the people of Washington will be very glad to take it_until they ean find a better one—in exchange for the almost impassa- Die streets with which they are at present afflicted. They may possibly have a better one in New York, but if they have it has been well kept out of view. +02 ‘Witt sor Fratrersise—The Baltimore An- ‘ual Conference of the M. E. Charch South, now in session in Baltimore, has refused the fra- ternal messengers from the Baltimore Annual Conference, (Rev. Messrs. Slicer and Bear,) in session at Frederick. While expressing re- Speet for the messengers personally, they de- clined the overtures of the Conference. After this action, which was by yeas and nays, the “fraternal messengers” retired, declining to be introduced personally after their rejection as fraternal visitors. The influences at the bottom of the action of the Southern Conference are connected with the clatms for certain ¢bureh property and pulpit. ——_—_—_-<+ee- The election in New Hampshire occurs to-day. There are four tickets in the field. The Re- Publican candidate for Governor is Onslow Stearns, the sitting Governor, who has been nominated for re-election, and Charles P. Gage, for Railroad Commissioner. The temperance ticket presents L. ©. Barrows and Henry 0. Pierce, a brother of the late President. The labor reformers have nominated Samuel Flint and George Roberts, and the Democrats John Bedel and Michael T. Donohoe. The whole vote for Governor last year was 67,781. Gover- not Stearns had 35,777 votes and Bedel 32,004 ‘votes, a Republican majority of 3,773. ——_—___- +02 A New Use vor Drrtomacy.—A New York paper has a story that a Russian subject, named Alexander Reno, who was sentenced to the pen- itentiary of that State for twenty-three years “*for one of the most horrible crimes any hu- man being can perpetrate,” has been pardoned by Governor Hoffman and released from prison seventeen years before the expiration of his sentence on the sole ground of his family con- nections. The statement is that the convict’s father is attached to the personal staff of the Emperor, and that his release was due to the “ blandishments of Russ!=» diplomatists.”” aa “Elsewhere will be found a very full and inter- esting report of the interview held by our citi- zens yesterday with the Senate District Com- @ittee upon the Territorial question. A portion of this report appeared in yesterday's STAR, but from the great interest manifested in the subject we publish it to-day compiete. ——— ‘The citizens of Baltimore will to-day cast their ballots for or against the ordinance suthor- izing the city to endorse the bonds of the Wes- tern Maryland Railroad Company to the amount of one million four hundred thousand dollars. “No Prxsmwts.”—High life in New York bad a wedding the other day, upon the invita- tion cards to which were engraved the signifi- cant words “ No Presents.” Gertixe Dows To Harp Pax !—Our money report shows that gold dropped to-day to 1114.
