=|] SS Se EVENING STAR. Receptions. ‘Mrs. Grant's receptions will be held every ‘Tuesday during the season, between the hours of 2and4 p.m. ‘The next reception of the Speaker of the House will be on Friday evening, March 18th, Tom 9 to 1! o'clock. Mrs. Biaine’s receptions will be held every Wednesday of the season, between the hours of 2and5p.m. . sit Exouise Orera.—Miss Hersee, the young English prima donna of the Parepa troupe, male something of a hit in her debut as Arline last night. She is decidedly attractive, personally, and bas a fresh an‘l pleasing little voice, which she uses—with the exception of the irritat ng fashionable tremolo—to good advantage. Her petite igure is just suited for the part of Arline. She sang “I Dreamt That 1 Dwelt in Marble Halls” very sweetly, giving also the correct em- phasis in every case, a particular in which Eng- lish singers are apt to be deticient. Altogether, she is a very acceptable acquisition to the Parepa troupe. Mr. Castle, who is a great favorite in Wash- ‘Ington, did fairly well; although toward the end he grew somewhat weak. With the exception of these two artistes—and the Aautboy—the perform- ance did not come up to expectation. Seguin, Who appeared last night as Devilshoof, is a goo: actor, but an indifferent singer. G. F. Hall, who appeared as a substitute for Campbell, made a very awkward Count Arnhem. He will be re- membered as concertizing with Ole Bull, in which capacity he acquitted himself with con- siderable credit; but it was evident last night that he had not the training for the operatic stage. De Sola, as Florentine, does not bear criticism. The chorus and the orchestra were good, very good; as were also the scenery and costumes. To-night have the eagerly anticipated “Marriage of Figaro,” performed in English for the first time in Washington, and which will bring out nearly the whole strength of the Com- pany—Parepa, Mrs. Seguin, Rose Hersee, Nord- blom, (the new tenor,) Campbell and others. ————_- -eee- It does not seem to be generally known that the Alexandria, Loudoun and Hampshire Rail- Toad Company has obtained a charter to extend their road through the State of West Virginia, from the Virginia line, by the best and most Practicable route, to the Ohio river, and with authority to change the name of the road to the “* Washington and Ohio Railroad.” By the lo- cated route the distance from Washington to Cincinnati is 355 miles, to Chicago 475 miles, and to Memphis 880 miles—making it, it is claimed, the shortest route to the West from the National Capital by any road now built or Projected. When completed it will afford a competing line te the West, and will, to a certain extent, aid in supplying needed railroad facilities for Wash- ington. There seems to be a little hitch in the Pro- posed railroad from Alexandria to Fredericks- burg in consequence of a contest for supremacy between two opposing charters. The oldest ot these charters expired during the war, but the time was extended by the Military Governor of Virginia, and there issome question of the le- gality of that action. From the importance of this enterprise, making a connecting link in the great shore-line railroad south, there is no doubt that work will ‘oon be commenced under one or both of these charters. Considerable grading has been done heretofore under the old aanter but we are not aware to what extent it will be ailable for the contemplated road or roads. +2. The recent steady fall in gold and the approach of currency to par has induced merchants to set their business upon that basis. The advertis- ing columns of the New York and Philadelphia bewspapers contain announcements from retail dealers that they have marked their goods down to a gold value, and that where change is nec- essary it will be given in silver. The sensitive- ess im the markets over the announcement of the sale of an extra million of gold in March, shown by the decline of two per cent. in pre- mium, indicates that the operatorsare beginning to despair of being able to sustain the premium. ‘The attempt to show that Western and Southern Products must fall off has failed them and it looks now as if they might make a stampede at any moment tc realize. This would probably bring gold dow to 8 or 10, at which figures silver would j amediately come into geneval circulation. A very slight cause weuld then bring gold down to par and add to the volume of the currency some $200,000,000. We shall then have more currency than we know what to dv with, and expansion resolutions will be heard of no more in the House. So mote it be! nes There is confusion confounded, just now, in consequence of the mixture of old numbers and bew numbers upon the houses. The contractors and the citizens should co-operate to get the new numbers placed as speedily as possible on every house in the city. At the same time it ay be well to allow the old numbers to remain on for a season, in connection with the new numbers, as a matter of convenience until the public is familiar with the new system. The old numbers might be desiguated by an erasure line across the face, made not so heavy as to obiiterate the figures. The contractors should | exercise care in the designation of streets at the corners, as we hear of numerous blunders in this | way calculated to mislead the public, and espe- cially strangers. — Ata meeting of the Public School Board ot Baltimore last evening a memorial was read from a number of colored citizens, stating their belief that the efficiency of the schools intended for the benefit of colored children would be materiallv promoted and their success assured,by committing them to the direction of teachers of their own color. They further state that they do uot desire that persons now acting as teachers In these schools should be superseded for the Purpose of appointing colored teachers, but that as vacancies oceur colored persons of both | sexes should be permitted to compete for the Positions to be filled. The memoral was laid on the table. <2 —______ The public interest is now so great in regard to the proposed change in the form of District government that it is doubtless only necessary to call attention to the fact that a mass meeting of citizens of the District in favor of the terri- torial plan of government will take place at Lincoln Hall to-morrow night. General How- ard, Judge Fisher, Hon. A. G. Riddle, John M. Langston, W. H. Philip, and other speakers Of prominence will address the meeting. 22+ resigned in Congress to-day up to a — boom orp agar alse cd amend rules call for petitions will be enlarged to. embrace a call yikgemranna sand — istic story or sketch by Brett Harte, (evidently,) entitled “ Brown of Calaveras.” <26ee “A man who is liberal in advertising is liberal | im trade, and such a man succeeds while his SF Handy-volumes—Pocket-books. ‘In Pennsylvania the colored Pa ‘from 10,000 to 12,000. =—_ will head thirty miles of Raa y wooden 7 A measure for ‘the Stibtchment of Indian , been proposed in the Missouri Leg- FINANCIAL AND commERcian. Asan indication of stusitiyenest of the diTom ent markets in Wall strect, we may cite the fact | that the announcement Monday of the sale of an extra million of gold for the month of Mare! caused a decline of two per cent. in the premi- um, and brought the stock market to the verge ofa panic; and withdrawal of this extra $1,00),- | 006 gold yesterday checked the downward course | of values, and started all the marketson the up- ward turn, culminating at the close yesterday afternoon ina general fit of activity and baoy- in the Gold Room and on the Stock Ex- change.
