The Republicans have nominated Gov. Stearns for re-election, and the Demo- rats have pitted against him Gen. John Bedel, who was also the candidate of the party last year. Besides the regular ticket, there are labor reform and temperance candidates in 32,004 votes—Republican majority, 3,773. In the Legislature there was a like majority of 59 on joint ballot—the Senate 9 Republicans, 3 Democrats, and the House 193 Republicans, 140 Democrats. It is seven years since the Demo- ersts carried New Hampshire, and they do not ‘Se m disposed to give h work to the pres- ent canvass. At any rate, they have no promi- nent canvassers in the field. The Kepublicans have some half dozen able speakers at work, including Senators Patterson and Nye and tative Dawes. ——_-<e--__ ‘THE Workixc Peorix.—The strike of Brick- ayers’ Union, No. 6, of New York City, to main- working for $150 and ¢1 @day. The master stone masonsof New York have resolved that after March 10th the Of the stone masons shall be #4 per day of 9 hours. +20e- New E1cut-Hove Law.—Mr. Hennessey has introduced a new Eight-Hour bill in the New aa Legislature, which makes it a misdemeanor for any contractor on Government work to compel his employes to work more than eight hours per day, and any State officer disregard- ing the law is to be deemed guilty of malfeasance in office. The present ‘Eight-Hour law” in that State is found to be a good deal of a farce, and this amendatory bill is intended to make it stringent. danger- of the Failroads, and let the public and commerce be Protected. It must come to that in theend, and the sooner Congress goes to work about the mat- ter the better.” ———_-.se- A great deal of complaint is made, and espe- cially by Inboring people, concerning the incon- hours designated by the Assistant As- pcre tin Revenue to receive income returns. These hours are from 2 to 4p. m., the ‘Most inconvenient in the day for those in busi- nessor at work. There seems no good reason why the hours should not be later in the even- ing—say, from 7 to 9 o’clock, and we would sug. g¢4t to the revenue officials that they would do ‘® great service to the public by changing the hours in this way. Ex-Governor Brownlow, of Tennessee, has published a card in the Knoxville Whig, in which hesays: “I am in favor of setting aside the present State GovePhment of Tennessee, and the doings of the State Convention and the present legislature, and of the appointment of a Military Governor, backed up by national treops, which will put a stop to the wholesale murder of white and colored Unionists. That Congress will do this I have no sort of doubt.” ——_~+ee-__ ‘The letter of President Grant to Mr. Boutwell, Written at New York last September, a little before the gold panic, is conclusive evidence that he was not in any ring, and had the single wish to act for the best good of the country. If further testimony were needed—as it is not—of the integrity of the President in this matter, it will be found im the report of the congressional investigation committee. +22 Mr. I. N.
