Thousands of notes and contracts made prior to February, 1562, have of course been settled in greenbacks, and inquiry is wade whether these settlements can now be reopened. and whether debtors can be compelied to settle on a coin basis. Lawyers hold that if greenbacks were accepted without protest or reservation, there can be no such thing as a reopening of the cases. All unsettled contracts entered into before 1362 can now, on the prineiple laid down in this decision, be en- forced in coin. This necessarily brings all out- standing corporate and city bonds, as well as individual obligations, issued before the opera- tion of the act, within the judgment of the Court as pronounced, and that without attempt at legal evasion, the decision being beyond ap- peal. Some doubt, however, is entertained as tothe course which may be adopted by the ‘States, against which there is no legal recourse, in the event of their continuing to pay in cur- rency. ‘The greatest effectot the decision will be in the matter of mortgages upon real estate; but many of these are made for four or five years and un- der, and the savings banks and capitalists have long ago given up in most cases the idea of col- lecting them im gold. Some States will proba- Diy pay their interest or principal in coin after this decision, but im a great many cases the credit some States would be very happy to receive the principal and interest in currency. ‘The railroadteompanies that have bonds due, or falling due, under thisdecision, will have to pay in gold. The decision generally is accepted as having a decidedly conservative tendency. It adds ma- terially to the transactions to be conducted upon ® coin basis; and, so far as it familiarizes the public with specie opgrations, it will have a marked effect in mitigating the common indis- position to change from the paper to specie basis. ‘To this extent, at least, the decision is a large step gained toward the resumption of specie payments. ‘The New York Jenkins has carried his enter- Prise to the extent of invading the church sanc- tuary, and a New York paper catalogues not only the names of the ladies who attend Grace Church, but also the dresses upon their persons. The toilets, Jenkins says, were in general “quict,” and he complains that individually they did not present “* much scope tor the aman- uensis of fa- Bat if it is understood that Jenkins is w be ent each Sanday, this diii- culty may be obviated. But it pays. From a poor man a short time ago, Helmbold is now a millionaire; and all from advertising. —seee- ‘The abuses to which the working girls ot New York are subjected to, at the hands of iheir em- ployers, have finally caused an effort to be made | to organize this class of operatives into apro- | tective body, so that when once the scale of prices is secured the girls may be enabled, | through their Uuion, to hold it.
