' EVENING STAR. Largest Cirealation inthe District | = WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDA February 1, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. Reet Repiren e e a ee ae Has Louis gels Gone been playing the part of the sick lion to draw the revolutionis‘s into his fave to be demolished? But yesterday he was, According to general report, on his death-bed, & Wreck physically and mentally; and his sceptre Seemed within ¢asy reach of any firm hand dis- [posed to grasp it. To-day we see him towering supreme over the tumultuous revolationary masses, holding the Feigns of empire with all the vigor and more than the astuteness of the Great Napoleon. We doubt if in the whole career of this remarkable man he has shown more sagacity and alertness than in the matter ef the suppression of the Fevolutionary mob of 100,000 men on the day of the Victor-Noir funeral. Everything had conspired apparently to aid the leaders of the revolution in their purpose. They had im the murder of Noira powerful provoca- five to inflame the people, and make the Goy- ernment, and especially the Bonaparte family, ‘Bnpopular; and the funeral occasion afforded a ‘Pretext for bringing together the entire revolu- tionary force in a mass of truly formidable pro- Portions. The revolutionists were largely armed, and it is stated that there were not less than fif- teen thousand revolvers in the line, s weapon in its capacity and deadlines far beyond anything ever before in the hands of the mob of Paris. But Napoleon's preparations to meet the emergency had been early and sure. It seems that he entered upon the preparations for a vigorous defence, in less ‘han am hour after the news of Noir’s murder reached Paris. Pietre, Napoleon's trusted chief of Police, prepared an ambuscade for the revolationists, and had the attempt been made to form a funeral procession to traverse the streets of Paris with the coffin of Noir, there would undoubtedly have been a fearful massa- ere of the people. The rain, which began to fall about noon, served to put a dam- | per upon the enthusiasm of the revolu- Uonists; but the Emperor did not put his trust in that. All day long he was on the move Im his carriage from one point to another- Whe arrangement of troops was admirable. Twenty thousand men in the different barracks in the city remained under arms all day; the Operators were at the telegraphic machines which are in all the buildings, and the cavalry ‘was kept ostentatiously promenading. The se- eret police, of which there are several hundred, always employed on such occasions, went and came incessantly from Neuilly, and it is said that fully two-thirds of the people around the grave of Noir were police disguised in plain clothes, but amply prepared against any riot- Kochefort was the object of the greatest watch- fulness. Orders were issued for his instant arrest if he attempted to bring his faneral procession into Paris, and*in case there ‘was any attempt made to rescue him, or to riot on his account, he was te be court- martialed and shot within twenty-four hours. ‘Towards five o'clock the procession of 100,000 People began to come down the Champs Elysee, returning from the funeral, making a traly formidable and threatening appearance. But there seemed to be nothing on the Government side to oppose them. No cavalry appeared in front or rear, and the motley crowd marched ©n, singing “* Mourir Ia patrie.” All at once, we are told, as the head of the procession ap- Proached the Palace of ,& loud, s0- norous drum-beat breke on the air—K-K-R-Itan, Yan,tan. The workmen pricked up their ears, the sidewalks, which had two minutes before been vacant, were swarming with policemen, each with a hand on his sword-hilt. Behindthe palace the measured tread of soldiery was heard, and up into line gradually came at least 5,000 of the chasseurs, small, lithe and “ crying to get into a fight.” It would have been a fight, and not merely @ massacre, for the workmen and civilians would have been so wild, had they been fired upon, that they could have done wonders without weapons. But no one had anticipated seeing soldiers rise, as it were, out of the ground, in this astonishing manner, and the avant garde of the workmen began to break. ‘Whereupon an estafette scampered off to tell the Emperor that there was nothing more to fear. A judge of the peace advanced, read in rattling tones the sommation to retire, and the Second drum-beat came in loud and vivid. Then bp marched a regiment at the rear, and, as at the third, the word “fire!” is generally given in that decisive country of imperialism, ‘the procession decided to go no further that day. Had the people persisted in its attempt to have a demonstration inside Paris, the Empe- yor would Lave taken the opportunity to sweep all his enemies to destruction. Since the ignominious failure of the ‘“revolu- tion” the leaders are quarreling among them- selves with intense bitterness. Rochefort, who it seems, fainted two or three times on the line of march, is denounced as a coward, and M. Flourens, one of the writers on bis journal, the Marseillaise, has refused to co-operate further with Rochefort, because at the decisive moment he hesitated to act. Rochefort in reply says that they had to meet 100,000 soldiers, and “all the cannon imaginable;” that the revolutionists would have been obliged to besiege Paris to gain tue strategical points on which a struggle could be engaged, and that the ‘intentions of the day” had been imprudently rumored at their previous meetings, so that the enemy was fully advised of their purposes. Altogether it is quite evident that the revolu- tionary leaders im France sadly lack the | brains if not the nerve to co pe with Napoleon. | A new article of iron has been presented for exhibition at the Geological Maseum of the General Land Office. It is a sheet of rolled iron three feet long and twelve inches wide, and ‘weighs but 3} ounces. It is thinner than ordi- ary writing paper, and will floatupon water. it has a fine polished surface, and its evenness and texture is superior to any thing of the kind we have ever scen. It was manufactared by ‘Wm. F. Rogers, of Appolls, Pa., and is used in the manufacturing of buttons, ornaments, &c., where very light and elastie texture is required. ‘This character of manufactured iron has here- fore come from Russia. The extreme thinness or tenuity to which the process of rolting has re- Guced this sheet. shows how pure and malliable the metal has become when under treatment in the furnace. The surface is equally smooth with ‘the best Russia sheet iron, and the whole pro ‘one harmonious government, should be attended by every citizen interested in the welfare of the District. It is desirab?e, above all things, that the give us the enlarged powers we need, and it will be a great pity if we fail to realize any bene- fit from that disposition by disagreement among ourselves. a “4 SEA ov TrovnL¥a”.—Some idea of what the hquor trade of the United States amounts to may be gained from the fact that on the pont | ts ‘The vexed qnestion of the rights of Justices of | ‘the Peace to imprison persons tor the nonpay- | ment of the matter is looked to "with much in- | feet Fs. | Government sales of 8,000,000 acres of ‘Texas lands, disposed of for unpaid taxes, Drought into the Treasury only $6,000.
