: EVENING STAR... Largest Circulation in the Distriet CROSBY &. HOYES........Baiter. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY.......Jamaary 26, 1978. Reading Matter on Every Page. The real-estate speculators out West are al- ready quarreling for the spoils in ease of the removal of the capital. Every prospective city im the West has its ring of speculators, who want to get the capital located on their unpopa- lated lands in the hope that they make their Pile by the operation. The Chicago Tridune, the sponsor for the capital-moving project, finds it necessary to admonish these rurai localities that they have no business to put their finger in the Pie; that it is settled that the capital, if removed, shall go to St. Louis or Chicago. Asthe Tribune has always said that Chicago doesn’t want the capital, and concedes that its insalabrious ¢li- mate wouldn't suit Congress, it amounts to a choice between Chicago and St. Louis, with (Chicago counted out. And it ts rather cool in the Tribune to berate the country real-estate speculators for their impudence in propos- ing to work the capital-moving scheme for their own benetit, when the original pro- ject to take the capital to St. Louis is notoriously a scheme for the benefit of certain Teal estate speculators of St. Louis co-operating with Chicago specniators who happen to own Teal estate opposite St. Louis. Why should’nt the country speculators have an equal show with the city speculators’? The Tribune lets the cat out of the bag by saying that the “immedi- ate property of which the Government would Fequire to obtain the title for the location of the Government buildings and collateral purposes would not exceed two thousand acres, and per- aps one thousand would be all that would be accepted as @ gift.” Exactly. The real estate speculators will induce the city of St. Louis, or the State of Missouri, to buy of them one thou- sand acres to give to Uncle Sam for the site of the Capital, and then they will sell him the ‘other acres he needs at their own price But to get the amount ot land necessary it will be requisite to go far outside the city limits and create a capital city on the prairie, even to set- ting out the sapling trees that will not in fifty years afford shade enough to cool the brows of our national legislators. Unele Sam is not likely to be duped by the speculators into entering upon a job the cost of which he can not count, but which is certain to amount to hundreds of millions of dollars. oe The politicians of Cincinnati are somewhat disturbed by a story lately put in circulation that Internal Revenue Supervisor Clarke (late ‘Third Auditor) proposes to move from the Sixth Obio District to the First, and there become a candidate tor Congress to succeed Mr. Strader. They aver that they have no objection to Mr. Clarke running for office wherever he will, bat they do object, and with some foree, to any per- son using his position as a revenue officer to farther his interests as an aspirant for any other honors. This sounds like good doctrine,—the Presumption being that if he does his whole duty as Supervisor he will haye little time two look after other offices; but if office-holders «idn’t use their present place as a stepping stone toa better one, we might well say the millenium is upon So eee es Tae ANNEXATION or Great Barrars—A handbill or poster has been issued in Great Brit- aim proposing, as “‘a remedy for the existing distress” in London, “that proper and lawful means be adopted to effect the annexation be- tween Great Britain and her colonies and the United States of America.” The paper gives as | the result of annexation that the risk of war would be taken away by the removal of jeal- ousy and bad feeling, and that the savings from the reduced military expenditure could be ap- plied to ameliorate the condition of the poor. The handbill says, also, that a project is on foot to promote annexation by meetings, lectures, the press, &c. Allright. We will annex Great Britain and make three new States of it, to add to our ge- lorious Union.
