E. Nourse, of the United States Navy, has pre- bared and published an interesting pamphlet concerning the Maritime Canal of Suez, com- piled from authentic sources of French, English and German documents, and comparing its re- lations and results with the ship canal across the Isthmus of Darian. The chief object of the pamphlet is to show the still more beneficial results for commerce by navigation through the Darien Canal. In illustration of this, tables of the saving of distance by the Darien route, and the influences of trade-wind and currents of the Pacific Ccean im favor of sailing vessels, are given. These tables, accompanied by statistics showing the trade of England, France, and the United States which would pass through the canal at the present time, if completed, were prepared by the Statis- tical Bureau of the Treasury Department, and are quite important. A heretofore unpublished letter to Professor Nourse, from Mr. Lesseps, Chief Engineer and founder of the Suez Canal, appears in relation to the Darien Canal. Mr. Leseeps says :—- You cannot doubt the interest with which I hear, in every enterprise, of the progress of navigation.
