Largest Circalation in the District | «* WASHINGTON CITY: ‘TUESDAY... -+-Jamuary 11, 1870. Reading Matter on Every Page. Speaker Blaine’s receptions will be at his residence, 406 15th street, each Friday evening of the season from 8 to 11 o'clock, commencing Friday, January ith. Mrs. Blaino’s receptions will be held every Wednesday from 2 to5 p. ——___—_ -+ee- —__—_ The Board of Aldermen last night decided with great unanimity that a form of government for this District will not do at all, and that the present form of municipal government is the correct and indispensable thing. Therefore, they ‘most earnestly and solemnly protest” to “against any movement having for its object the placing of this District under a board of commissioners,” &e., &e. It is natural that the Aldermen should look with disfaver upon any movement calculated to rotate them out of office, but what say the peo- ple—the tax-payers? They can speak more disinterestedly. The “present mode of govern- ment” for this city has been thoroughly tried, and with results apparent to all. Now, in consideration of the present deplorable financial condition of the city, the heavy debt and rapidly increasing rate of taxation, would it not be just as well to give the tex-payers an opportunity to express their views? There are doubtless objec~ tions to the commissionership form of govern- ment, as well a# to the present form, but we trust Congress will not aceept the unanimous protest of the Aldermen as by any means the unanimous voice of the tax-payers. ——-<ee- —____ ‘The press of the country quite generally cen- sures the strike of the telegraphers as hasty and ill-advised, and advises them to recall their action and go to work before their places are filled. The Trades’ Unions of the country, While in many instances giving support to the teyegraph strikers, do not accord to the strike an entirely hearty endorsement; in fact the ‘Trades’ Unions as a body find the burden from “ strikes so heavy that it is proposed to change the form of organization to the eXtent of recog- nizing no local trade strike that has not been first endorsed by a National organization. Still it is not to be denied that the striking telegraphic operators present a very selid and determined front. The company is equally obstinate and determined, but as the loss must be heavy on both sides, we should suppose that seme fair, clear-headed arbitrator could speedily arrange a settlement of the difficulties. see Miss BaTEemay.—This actress drew one of the most crowded and fashionable andiences of the season at the National Theatre last night to witness her impersonation of the Jewish Maiden in the dramatization fron the Freneh play of Deborah entitled “Leah.” The President's family, Gen. Sherman and family, and Gen. Porter were present. Miss Bateman’s rendition ef the part was most natural and un- afieeted, free from the stage rant that mars some of our best actremes. and yet was given With a power and effect truly grand. Mr. Jordan. as Rudolph, fully maintained histrepu- tat “Leah” is repeated to night. +22 We sce it stated that a newspaper is soon to be started here by colored men, with Rev. ‘Sella Martin as editor and Fred Douglass as one of the writers. Mr. Martin has been brought be- fore the public quite prominently by the lead- ing part he has taken in the agitation of the mixed school question. He was, at one time, a writer for the New York Evening Post, and has had considerable training to fit him for the | tion editorial tripod. Fred Douglass has had large newspaper experience as contributer and con- ductor. oe ee ‘The Washington correspondent of the Balti- | more Gazrite says that now that the Intelligencer | is dead beyond possibility of resurrection “par- ties have arranged for the issue of a purely Democratic paper” here. Washington needs a good many things, but we doubt if she is hank- for a “purely Democratic pa- Per,” or a pur-ly political paper of any kind. However, if any body thinks so, and has the money to experiment in that line, the thing can ie triedom. It will heip the printers aud pa- per-makers at any rate. ———+200-— ‘Two of the most important of the committees im the Eeumenical Council are those om faith | and on the propositions of the Bishops.
