EVENING STAR. | Lin te " WASHI I NGTON CITY: +++eee-Sameary 1, 1870. _Reading Matter on Every Page. The New Year. On m this day, the first of the year 1870, we ten- der to our readers the compliments of the season, aul wish them hea!th, happiness and prosperity. May the year in which we have just entered have for them a happy opening im the enjoy- ment of the festivities customary at this season, be prosperous in its continuance, and leave them content at its close. The past year has been one cf prosperity and success te the People of the District of Columbia. It has brought to us a large increase of population, Wwitnesed the initiation of new enterprises and the strengthening and enlargement oj old ones. We have been exempted from great calamities by fire, flood or disease during the past twelve months; and the new year, we hope, will be one of still continued prosperity, in which our city will maintain its growth, extend its limits, and attract to itself a stil! larger business and success. ovis sand Sout atk eta in tang or on new associations, new responsibilities and new prospects. May we be prepared to turn the lessons of the past into beacons of the future, ‘and if all will make the best of their opportu- nities for good, and perform thejduties devolved © on them to the best of their ability we have no sioubt the new year will be a happy oue for thea, if not in the realization of all their hopes, ‘at least im the consolation of having done right. —_—__<se--— SATURDAY... ys beng my pent: Wectingion ph pimp tee rela- ion proposed extension dria, Loudon and continue to Alexandria, with only an elbow switeh toe’ We at Four Mile Kun, and with the deyot, machine shops and warters at Alexandria.” Oh no, certainly! But we suppose the Nision would be perfectly clear, if the railroad and everything connected with it, coal tbe plum in the midst of city, one the Cotporation ox citsere of Washes mn oF citizens = Alexandria Gazette. Well, it certainly does'nt strike usin just that light. The Gazetie is apparently not aware | that the Loudon & Hampshire Railroad Com- pany bave applied to the District cities for a large sum of money—one or two millions of dol- lars—to aid them in the proposed extension of their read. We don’t expect to have the rail- Toad, and everything connected with, plumped down here without cost to us, but we have a Fight to ava that if we contribute this large sum Of money it shal’ be applied in a way to be of service in building up a system of railroads for Washington. not fer Alexand:ia. And we repeat tha we don't see how Washing- ton is to be greatly benefitted by a switch from Four Mile Run while the main stem of the road continues to Alexandria. But we do not blame Alexandria for her dispo- sition to build herself up. It is greatly to her inhabitants, credit, a city of ten thousand that she has railroads of her own, with machine and repair shops, depots, stations, &c:, while Wash- ington, a city of 120,000 inhabitants, doesn’t own 4 foot of rail, and has only the loan of a couple of shabby station-houses. We simply don’t want to perpetuate this state sees = Alexandria cannot blame us if we propose to spend what money we have to spend on rail- Toads—not on switches, but on railroads ra- dating from Washington and having their headquarters here. It is announced that the Democrats of Cham- paign county, Ohio, are ranning Harry Ford, a colored man, for State senator from that dis- trict. The tickets have printed upon them the aphorism that “‘ 1f he is white enough to vote, he is white enough to be voted for.” It happens that the district is very strongly Republiean, which fact is the only thing calculated to throw »uspicion uron the ea:ncstness of the nominating party. rans The Eritish Cabinet have nearly agree, it is Ne; said. to settle the Icisb land grievance by a measure which wili omit the Irish demand for fixity of teuure and Mr. Bright's scheme of peasant proprietorship.
