(CrecvraR.] Officers of the Army in this city ‘Will assemble in uniform at the War Depart- ment, at 11 y o'clock, a. m., Saturday, January 1, 1810, to pay their respects to the President of regiment will present his officers to the Presi- dent. By command of General Sherman: E.D. Townsenp, Adjutant General. —————<e--___ The opponents to George A. Pearre are making great efforts to defeat his confirmation being extensively circulated here, to come from “Many Republicans of Western Maryland,” quoting from an address made by Pearre on November 3, 1367, to the voters of Al- Jeghany county, in which he positively denicd that he was in favor of negro suffrage or negro equality, or that he favored put- ting negroes Im the jury box. The cireu- iar also charges that « Pearre stated to Mr. Samuel Haller—a Republican member of the Maryland Legislature of 65—that the « Civil Eights Bill’ was unconstitutional; and if he were Judge no negro could testify before him under it.” In conclusion, the Cumberland Re- publicans say-—“ We want no Judge who re- Ceives the endorsement of the New York Round Table and the Democratic Bar of Maryland.” it remains to be seen what effect these charges against Pearre will have upon the Senate, but quite evidently they will not tend to smooth the Way to his confirmation. +e2-—____ Donn Piatt, writing to the Cincinnati Com- mercial, thinks the people of Washington need eee more than they do an Exposition; but “ However, let us have the National Exposi tion. Let us have am that will aan public interest inour |, ANd Above wil the e ise and business life of its citizens. The Old story of the cartman and Hercules is appli- Sable again. The spirit of enterprise once | invoked will enable us to build railroads, estab- ish manufactures and do all the things that Wide-awake communities are in the habit of doing. — In New York city the water-supply is so Fcanty that at the Russian and Turkish baths the water is saved economically in tanks after being ased by the bathers, and is pumped back for use again and again. The New Yorkers are not very nice about such matters, and have Btood it quite philosophically for some time; but the other day some ladies at the Russian baths under Wallack’s Theatre found the second-hand Water so foul, and the stench produced by it in 2 heated state so great, that they could not pos- fibly use it. The fact has created some com- iment, and the New York papers are forced to admit that water thus over-used is hardly pleas- ant for bathing purposes. If Washington were caught in so nasty a trick, we should never hear the last of it from the New York editors #ho have so keen an eye for the disagreeables of this city. —————<e--__ ‘The West is not disposed to give up the idea Of getting the benefit of increased representation ander the new census bill, and especially if the whole number is to be inereased to 300. Ac- cording to the usual order of things there would be no election of members of Congress under the the western people mean to get the new mem- bers at the next election, and will be quite likely to have their waf. The question of apportion- ment had to be dropped from the census bill, or it could not have passed the House before the Tecess; but it will come up separately at an early day, and the western men are Tights. The West expects to gain about fifty qmembers of Congress under the new census. though probably costing more there. The Dispatch says ‘that there are but two such in Virginia, George 8. Cady, of Culpepper, and S. P. Moore, of King ‘Wilham, and in neither case does the defalcation amount to more than $2,000. +202- ‘The Savannah Republican says “Mr. Stanton ‘Was a bad man,” and adds, “he was the life and foul of the Federal armies during the late war, and bot for his abilities and unconquerable f cational purposes.” It is right and proper that such grants should be made, but why leave the District of Columbia out in the cold ?
