EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District "CROSBY 8. NOYES.. Editor. WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY... December 27, 1569. Reading Matter on Every Page. ena "Alexandria the London and Hamp- Saane Kailread. Twe or three days ago we quoted from the Weshingion correspondence of the Baltimore Gazette a statement that Hon. Lewis McKenzie, “who has been so active in trying to obtain a subscription of a million of dollars from our citizens towards the completion of his railroad to Cincinnati has advocated the imposition of a tax per capita on all passengers coming over that road who come to Washington by the Washing- ton and Alexandria road on the ground that the latter road takes trade away from Alexandria and brings it to Washington.” To this quota- tion we appended the enquiry “What has Mr. McKenzie to say to this?” and im answer have Teceived the following from that gentleman : Editor Evening Star: 1 had seen what the cor- Fespordent of the Baltimore Gazette had said about me, but such is my aversion te appeari the papers. I thought 1 could stand itvand had determined to let it pass, till Fajen ser Script in the Evexrxe Stan. I made no such statement in the City Council or any where else. Asa member of the City Couneil I had voted to give the Washin, Alexandria & Georgetown road the free ane of ‘way into St. Asaph street, and I would hardly now consent to lay a passenger tax on that road. When the matter was introduced into the Councli, I Speen | stated I did not believe the Toad conld nd the resolution was re- ferred to the Committee of General Laws = ascertain whether we had any such tl Incider taliy and playfully talking about ne said, I thought when ight came, renee woata be better at their homes if they | to, than running to Washington to Thantetwan operas. I think so, still. About the Sabocription © to the Alexandria, Loudon and Hampsh: Nee og it would be a great ching tor for the Captian of the nation to have a rvad coming into the western part of the city from the Great West, doing away with the constant complaint of want of facilities in reach- ing Washington. I am not importuning or beg- ging anything; neither do I intend to. If we can, with ration of Wi }» Take a road to the Oblo Fiver shorter byau, ser) ailes than any other route. I apprehend it will be of immense advantage to Washington, more than to Alexandria, besides opening up the Fichest mineral regions of Virginia, by a com- paratively easy route. Time will’ determine Thether ‘they avail of the opportunity pres sented. Lewis McKenziz. We agree with Mr. McKenzie asto the impor- tance to Washington of this shorter route to the Ohio and direct line to the Hampshire coal fields, if the road can come direct to the “ west- ern part of the city,” but do not see how it will greatly benefit us, or be of “‘ more alvantage to Ww ‘ashington than Alexandria,” it its main stem is to continue on as now to Alexandria, with only an elbow switch for Washington at Four Mile Run, and with the depots, machine shops and headquarters of the rcad in Alex candria. Our community is alive to the need for m3re Tailroad éacilities, and is ready to mcet Mr. MeKenzie fora square business-like arrango- ment that will afford proper guarantees that Our money shall be expended really for the ben- efit of this city. We do not expect to get indem- nity for the past, (i. ¢., the money given withou! i to our positive disadvantage, to the vand Alexandria ryad,) but ought at least to have an eye to “security tor the ru- ture.” — It scems by the published letter of Governor Bowie to the President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company, dunning the latter for the unpaid ~titth of the gross recerpts from Passengers over the Washington Branch,” that | the money derived from this swindle upon the traveling public is “ absolutely needed to provide for the expenses of the State.” In other words. The Suez Canal, according to Mr. Smalley, the in’elligent and apparently fair-minded rep- Fesentative of the Tribune at the great opening, will do for steam vessels less than two hundred feet im length and drawing less than fourteen feet, but he estimates that about $20,000,000 and nearly a year's time will be required to bring it up to the original promise, and to make it really available for commercial purposes,—the great need being greater depth of water and straight- | ening Of certain short curves.
