Lewis McKenzie, “who has been so active in trying to obtain a subscription of a million of dollars from our citizens towards the completion of his railroad to Cincinnati has advocated the imposition of a tax per capita on all passengers coming over that road who come to Washington by the Washing- ton and Alexandria road on the ground that the latter road takes trade away from Alexandria and brings it to Washington.” To this quota- tion we appended the enquiry “What has Mr. McKenzie to say to this?” and im answer have Teceived the following from that gentleman : Editor Evening Star: 1 had seen what the cor- Fespordent of the Baltimore Gazette had said about me, but such is my aversion te appeari the papers. We agree with Mr. McKenzie asto the impor- tance to Washington of this shorter route to the Ohio and direct line to the Hampshire coal fields, if the road can come direct to the “ west- ern part of the city,” but do not see how it will greatly benefit us, or be of “‘ more alvantage to Ww ‘ashington than Alexandria,” it its main stem is to continue on as now to Alexandria, with only an elbow switch for Washington at Four Mile Run, and with the depots, machine shops and headquarters of the rcad in Alex candria. Our community is alive to the need for m3re Tailroad éacilities, and is ready to mcet Mr. MeKenzie fora square business-like arrango- ment that will afford proper guarantees that Our money shall be expended really for the ben- efit of this city.
