EVENING STAR. Largest Circalation in the Distriet WASHINGTON CITY: _Reading Matter on Every Page. Several bills designed to put an end to polyg- Congress, amy in Utah have been introduced in and we see that some of our seem to think that it needs nothing but a little whe ¢3 me legislation to: x i pate that objection- able institution, root and branch. They seem to be ignorant of the fact that Congress has already passed laws sufficiently stringent to that end; but the difficulty is to execute them. So longas the anti- Mormon community look upon polyg- ‘®my as a religous institution to be defended at all hazard, there ig no probability of breaking it down in the courts of Utah; and the Govern- ment would put itself in a ridiculous attitade by undertaking to enforce the one-wife system by military force. It isa knotty problem to deal with, but it will likely be solved on Brigham’'s Geath, if he should not before that time find it convenient to receive a “revelation” duty @f the practice of polygamy, which they all affect to bear as a painful cross. It is stated that Brigham is not quite so enthusiastic a polygamist as he was when a younger man, and in one of bis late discourses at the Tabernacle he intimated that he would not object to have am expression of the views of the members of the church, male and female, upon the question. As he gets further into the sere and yellow leaf he may be the more inclined to accept a revela- tion authorizing the Mormon husbands to aban- don their expensive system of housekeeping, which, by the way, is getting more and more Onerous, now that the Pacitic railroad has intro- duced all the world’s fashions and laxuries to the Mormon wives. —_—_-~<e-e-—_____ Tt seems that the English exhibition which Senator Sumner thought might interfere with 1871, issimply a trade exhibition designed to be held anuaally in London, taking only two or three classes of articles each year. That of 1871 is toembrace applied art, woolens, porcelains, &e. The fact that this exhibition isto be held in England is rather @ matter of encouragement to us, as showing that the exhibition system is deemed so important an element of national Prosperity as to be made a permanent institution there. And there is no reason to apprehend that the Washington Exposition will be overshadowed that in London. The artists, inventors, and manufacturers of the old world are seeking new openings for display and new customers, and will eagerly avail themselves of the good oppor- tunity afforded of presenting their wares and achievements to the notice of forty millions of people on this side of the Atlantic. Meantimes aswe have pointed out, our own artists, inven- tors, and manufacturers cannot afford to con- ede the field to their rivals across the water, but must perforce be on the ground with their best and latest work. And this rivalry must result in making the exhibition one of exceeding interest. ———__-<e2- ‘The Failey Virginian advocates a line of rail- road, and direct communication, from Washing- ton city and Alexandria, via Culpeper Court House, Madison Court House, Stanardsville, Swift Run Gap, and Port Republic to Staunton. it says that the railroad from Alexandria. as far as Culpeper Court House, is almost on the iret line to the western terminus of the Chespeake and Ohio Road. But, as at Culpeper Court House, it makes a detour to the Southward, it argues that a road from Culpeper to Staunton on the line, and along the route mentioned, would be a most valuable as well as a direct one, and would strike through the heart of Madison and Greene, and then after touching the North- West line of Albemarle, drain some of the most tertile portions of Kockingham and Angusta. ——-~+0e- “AN AGGRAVATING Srectacts.”—The New York Commercial says that “the Spanish gun- beats as they moved down the bay yesterday, following the flagship one after another in line, aggravating spectacle. The people who gather- edalong the Staten Island shores, indulged in language not the most mild and moderate. Those people, however, who are disposed to allow their sympathies to get the better of their judgment, should recall the dire consequences which would have followed had we not subjected ourselves to the humiliation of releasing Mason and Slidell.” ———_———_-+ee-___ The Young Men's Christian Association have under consideration a proposition to strike out ‘the word male from their constitution.
