EE Eo EVENING STAR. Largest Cirealation in the Distriet CROSBY 5S. NOYES........Editer. Reading Matter on Every Page. Why Net? ‘Why should not Washington be in winter, from its mild climate and its various attractions while Congress is in session, what Saratoga or Newport is to the country in summer? Why, for instance, should not the upper-tendom of the ‘Ne thern cities who take their summer residence ‘the experiment, and his fine team may be secn ‘sed to spin along over a smooth road after a Yast team. And yet this wretchedly paved street, dreaded by man and beast, needs only a good wood pavement, such as that of Wabash avenue, Chicago, for instance,to make it the Sinest drive in America. We doubt if even in ‘the world a street of such noble proportions can he found in the heart of a city, so well adapted for the display of handsome equipages. ‘Its im- Perial width makes it now concededly the finest Street known for parades, processions, &c., and it needs nothing but a good pavement of wood— dry, clean and smooth at all seasons of the year—to make it the resort of the fashion of the country during the sessions of Congress. Self- reservation, however, must warn the business men of the Avenue not to permit this matter of paving the Avenue to be longer neglected, unless they want to see their business trans- serred to some parallel street above that shall be wide awake enough to forestall them with a good pavement. Their first business should be to get authority from Congress to iay the pave- ment. If Government will pay its propor- tion—as it ought, at least to the extent of paving in front of its own property—well and good; but if there is any hitch in that quarter, it should not be allowed to delay the measure a moment. Let the property holders, the Corpo- ration and the strect railroad divide the cost among them; the Corporation paving the inter- Sections of streets, the property holders in front of them, and the street railway their track and the distance outside they are compelled by their charter to do. It should be entered upon at once. Any one who imagines that the Avenue Will maintam its business supremacy with its Present wretched pavement must be an infatu- ated Avencodis, indeed! — A Massachusetts says good Btyle Sting memegereasann again in jhe shire. A farmer takes a load of wood to market, it pays = a a of flour, which has not we case before in nearly ten years.” peas style of things,” indeed! Ex- cept in the matter of grain, perhaps, farmers were never so profitably situated with respect dv the value of their products as compared with other articles of daily consumption as they have Deen lately and as they are now. And this with- out taking into account the discrimination in their favor in the levying of taxes. It used to be, ior example, that a dozen of eggs would hardly pay for a yard of commonest brown musbn, nd @ pound of butter would buy no more than & yard of ordinary calico or a pound of sugar, How is it now? The purchasing power of a dozen of eggs is equal to fonr or five yards of the Same sheeting, while a pound of butter is good for at least four yards of good calico or as many Pounds of choice brown sugar. And so on through the whole category. — +20: There is nothing like truth telling and fair dealing. A servant girl in San Francisco, who hired in a family under the representation that it consisted of only five persons, at the rate of ‘$60 per month, recently claimed and commenced Suit for a proportionately larger amount be- cause there were nine in the family instead of five, the number for which she had contracted to work. The suit came to trial, when the points raised were: Whether the employer had 2 right to exact more labor than she stipulated fer, and whether, if more labor was performed, the employe had a right to collect in proportion to the amount of labor performed. A large umber of authorities were quoted, and the Case tinally submitted for decision. The court, Riter consulting all the authorities cited, ren- Wered a decision favorable to the plaintiff, and Rave Judgment for an additional allowance of $2 per month. —+.0e- In consequence of the recent seizure of all the vgarin the bonded warehouses of New Yerk 1 Brooklyn, for alleged frauds in weighing, irade in that article bas been seriously inter- fered with, and the price has advanced from 2 to 24 cents per pound, according to. grade. At is to be hoped that it will not turn out by and Dy that the officers engaged in making the Seizure were in a combination to get up a corner in sugar, and invoked the power of Government ‘to do what they lacked the nerve and capital to accomplish in the usual way. But stranger ‘tuings have happened. ———_-+e2--_______ A new obstacle to the suggested annulment of the Richardson-MeF arland wedding by the New ‘York courts, on the ground that the Indiana di- Yorce of Mrs. MeF. was not lawful or regular, is found in that clause of the Federal Constitu- tion which provides and requires that “Fall faith and credit shall be given in each State to each of the public acts, records and judicial Proceedings of every other State.” This would Seem to dispose of the matter, so far at least as ‘that phase of the case is concerned. ——__-+ee-____ QvrEr NaMEs.—We are in receipt of a new weekly paper entitled Bortram’s Cheek, pub- li-hed by W. H. H. Bartram, at Midland City, Mich., under the novel motto “Beauty and Business.” This is nearly as bad as The Jimple- ente, which is the title of a tri-weekly paper pub- shed at Jefferson, Texas. —_+-ee-____ It seems to be conceded by our agricultural exchanges that the report of the Commissioner ‘©f Agriculture for 1563, and accompanying mat- ter, is the most valuable volume that has yet ‘been issued from that office. ‘That excellent weekly, Every Saturday, is to be further improved by Messrs. Fields, Osgood & Co., who propose to make it an iraperial folio about the size of Harpers’ Weekly, with first- Class illustrations in each number. ——__—-<ee-_____.
