Ag iF TIGERS PD TE Ie Hey ta OEE a SE NE) xe PAG Seb Ag Bowe. » EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District ~ WASHINGTON CITY: SUESDAY..........Desember 14, 1969. We sare You're Bight, Then 6 ‘We are giad to note that at the late railroad meeting at the City Hall the speakers, while showing proper zeal for the object in view of in- ertasing the city’s railroad facilities, seemed impressed with the necessity, heretofore pointed ‘out in these columns, of starffng right in the matter of affording sid to the railroad projects seeking to secure the endorsement of the Car- Toration. We repeat : let it be distinctly understood that ¥e do not propose to buy switchas.or elbows. ‘We want main stems radiating from Washing- ton; and every dollar we spend should go to build up a raflroad system for this District that shall make the country penetrated tributary to this city. We want the engin® houses, repair shops, depots, &c., here, and full securtty of an authoritative voice inthe management of the reads, to ensure that they are not rin adversely © ourdnterests. To secure thege ends we can better afford to spend miilions, than to fritter away somo hundreds of thousands on switches and elbows on roads running past Washington. ‘This city threw away a good deal of monéy on he Washington and Alexandria road, gimply to enable that road to disc Wash- ngton, by taking soutien through our city to Baltimore cheaper’ if dropped here. And Baltimore merchants hal the advantage of the same discriminatiog against our mer- chants in sending freight to Virginia. Just now the Loudon and Hampshire toad is making activ? efforts to get aid fgpm the District oities; and that aid ought to be extended, and With a liberal hand, if the proper guarantees ean be secured for eur protection, But we Teally cannot see what Washington is to get for het money if the main stem is to run, as at pres- ent, to Alexandrja, and we are to have nothing ut an elbow from “Four Mile Run.” There is already a switch connection between the two roads—the Louden and Hampshire and the Washington and Alexandria road—near that oint; but the advantage to Washington is not ppreciable. With such elbow the freight would to goto Alexandria, as at present. Washington, with s popalation of 129,009, has a right to some- thing in the railroad way besides switches and cibows; and while we wish well to Alexandria it is rather too disinterested an act in us to pay money to build @ road solely far her benefit. Our city in giving aid to any railroad enter- prises must also see that the money goes to legiti- mate ends; must beware of playing into the hands of the railroad “rings” that are gobbling up the railroad franchises of the country for Speculative purposes. These speculators operate in railroad franchises just as they would in stocks, or grain, or cotton, without regard to the interests of the public further than their own anterests may run in the same channel. These railroad specultors have monopolized most of the northern and western roads, and are now €xtending their operations south. The modus operandi is to bay up a majority of the stock at a low figure, and then by securing State, county, or city aid to so inflate the stock that they can handsomely without risking or spending bp od Of their own. It will be necessary for our corporate authorities to keep their eyes wide open in ‘limg with any of these adroit gentle- men of the “rings.” We must see that our money goes to build us railroads, and not to ‘enable them to “bull” their shares. ——— Dr. Frothingham preached in New York on Sunday onThe Foes of Society.” Consider. ing his connection with the Richardson-McPar- land marriage ceremony, so-called, we should say the reverend geutleman ts entirely familiar wth his onbj Indeefl, he has only to look little mirror in the crown of his hat to © releetion of one of its most striking il- | gamous wedding is still the current New York, and Horace Greeley and y Ward Beecher have some more cards | knows no proof against McFarland to sustain the charge he (Beecher) made against him of being guilty of “the only offence whieh | is a Scriptural ground for divorce. — A letter of ex-Governor Wells, of Virginia, is lished, in which he advocates the immedi- mission of Virginiaand the removal of all | Political disabilities. ee George W.
