The Pacific Railroads. Anesteemed correspondent takes exceptions, | in a private and friendly way, to the comments printed in these columns a few days ago upon the Teport of the Commission last appointed to ex-— amine and report upon the condition of the Union and Central Pacific Railroa:s. Or, rather, he thinks, that if we had quotedall the Commis- sion had to say upon the point as to what, in their opinion, constitutes a first-class road, the force of our criticism would have been broken, if, indeed, it had not been rendered entirely use- Jess. EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District | __ CROSBY S. NOYES. WASHINGTON CIT “ON .Nevember &, 1869. _ Reading Matter on Every | Page. The Bible in the Pablie Schools. _ ‘The contest in the Cincinnati Board of Edaca- tion over the question of the exclusion of the Rible from the public schools of that city ex- cites very general attention, bat its natare seems to be a good deal misunderstoo in som2 quarters. The Board of Education, after pro- tracted and stormy discussions, by a vote of 22 to 15 decided to exclude the Bible asa text book sl the singing of hymns in the public schools; andthe impression has gone out that the vote for exelusion was effected by a combination of the Catholic members, Israelites, and Free- thinkers. An analysis of the vote, however, shows that this was not exactly the case. The Catholics voted in a body for exclusion, but the Protestants were divided, as were the Israclites and Free-thinkers. Some of the Protestant members voted for the exclusion on the ground that it woald remove the incentive for separate | sectarian schools onthe part of the Catholics. Itis qtite evident, however, that the Catholic authorities do not propose to accept Bibleless schools in liew of schools of their own. It isa wonder where all the books of travel over the well trodden routes of the world, find pur- chasers; but that they do, is indicated by their produetion by experienced publishers, and in expensive sty! as in the case of this book, which, with its cream-tinted paper and hand_ some print, is a delight to the eve. The “Notes” are very good notes of their kind, which is of the gushing. “Mrs. Hawthorne coins adjectives after @ style that would have ee that fluent ward-inventor, the late N. P. Willis; and she misuses word “nice” most provokingly; but for all that, and perhaps because of it, her book is quite attractive. From J. Shillington we have: Linda; or, The Young Pilot of the Belle Creole. By Mrs. Caroline Lee Hentz. Philadelphia: T. Peterson & Co. We have no idea how many litions of this story have been published, but certainly enough to show an enormous sale and preportionate popularity. Petersons now bring it out in less ephemeral form than hereto- fore, with handsome print and binding. From John C. Parker, 7th street, opposite Post Office, we have: ‘The Physical Life of Woman. By George H. Napheys, M. D. Philadelphia: Geo. Maclean. This is a physiological treatise, intended more particularly for women, and giving intelligent advice of service through all the stages of maid- and maternity. It strikes us as the best that has appeared upon'this subject. The treatment of the topics is scientific, and the in- formation given is presented in language that cannot offend. We sce that the book is heartily endorsed by men of the highest professional emi- nenee.
