Everybody, nearly, of note and fashion in Washington may be said to have been Present. The hew concert room—Lincoln Hall— is a great improvement upon anything we have had, for concert purposes; the main defect, to our mind, being the narrow exits. There are enough of them, but they are too narrow to af- ford prompt egress tor a large audience. The public convenience would also be advanced by dividing the auditorium into sections, thereby afording easier access to the seats. In acoustic qualities the hall is very good. Carlotta Patti has improved greatly Since she last appeared here. She is filled out; has that much prized acquisition for the cantatrice, a tine bust, and her powers of voice have been cultivated closely. Her execution is ¥ery fine, and is displayed conspicuously in her trills, and in staceate, creseendo and diminuendo avcages. Asin the case of Adelina Patti, her Yoick is not powerful, but is ample for her uses. Her rendering of the parts upon her programme was certainly very delightful, and the audience Was rather over-demonstrative im asking her for more than the three pieees set down. Quite certainly she lacks in warmth, but the pieces in }-: repertoire of last night did not require great scr vor. and the quality was not so much missed. It will not do to say, however, that an artiste has ne inspiration for lyric passion, in concert, Parepa has shown that it does not need stage ac- ccssories to give the inspiration for such fervor As an encore, Patti gave with effect the Laugh- ing Seng, from Auber’s opera of Merron Lescault, asongshe sang here some six years ago, when much less celebrated in the musical world than now. Prume, the viollnist—a nephew, by the way, of the composer Prame—made a good im- Trescion. His bowing is not of a good school, and his effects are calculated rather for a popu- lar audience than otherwise, but melodious strains from the cat-gut are rather pleasing after ihe ear-fatiguing efforts of the current artists of the bow. Ritter disptayed superb execution upon the piano, especially in running passages. Her- manus, basso, is rather robust for the concert room, and his thunderous shakes last night were decidedly out of place. Squires, tenor, shows no jate improvement upon a barely tolerable voice. ‘Two fine Steinway pianos were in use at the con- cert last night, and as they seemed to be of equal excellence and as but one was used at a time, some portion of the audience were a little puz- zled to guess why, in each successive piece, one Viano was trundied up the stage and another trundied dowa, for curreut use. The explanation is that Mr. Kitter as pianist has his instru- ment pitched half a note higher than the pitch Patti uses in singing. In other words, the con- cert singer is accompanied by an instrument on the Freneh pitch, or Diapason Normal, while the yiano performer for brilliancy of execution has Lis instrument pitched a little more than half a note higher, playing upon what is called the English Philharmonic pitch. We are glad to hear that there is a probability that Patti may appear in concert in Washington again ere long. Tue Next Exsctioxs—The next elections ceur on the 30th instant, in Texas and Missis- *ppi.on adopting the new State constitutions and for Officers under them. The total regis- tration in Mississippi is 139,997, of whom 59,176 are white and 80,761 colored. There were 76.01% votes cast at the convention election, of which 3.522 were colored and 69,737 were for ution. In Texas the vote for the con- last year was 54,388, giving 30,806 ma- sits favor, but several counties are not decluded im the return. —2ee-—__ e never to have done with. won- Gee= ins the great interior basin of the continent. ‘Ibe latest discovery im this ine is a boiling ito have beem found on the banks of io river, im the neighborhood of Big which throws ap a stream of water ton diameter one hundred feet high.
