THE CASE OF THE HORNET. ‘The facts as to the action of foreign govern- ments in regard to the alleged Qubsn pri weer, the Hornet, are, as we learn, as follaws On Friday last, the Spanish Minister here Presented bis complaints to the Siate Depart. | meat in reference to the Hornet, asking that the steamer be seized under the neutrality Isws. At this time he also notified the lush and French legations of the position of | affairs. A consultation of the English, Freach amd other Ministers was at once held, which Tesulted in the ordering of the seizure of the Hornet by the ships of the several nations, ard thus as stated by us vesterday, that vessel, in being ured by the collector at Smithville, escaped a worse tate at other hands. Both the English and French governments Tegard this vessel as a piratical craft—not asa PTivateet—for they do not recognize any au- thority in Cespedes to give a national authority | to the vessel, nor do they recognize the exist- euce of any government in Cuba but that of Spain. Tinas been understood in official circles here for some time that Eagland and France in- tended to treat the matter in this way as soon as the Cuban msurgents attempted to place an armed vessel on the high seas, and the sailing of the Gaba or Hornet, under so-called letters of marjue, has afforded the looked-for oppor- tunity. PLUMBAGO AND ITS USES. Specimens of graphite plumbago, or black Jead, trom various parts of the country, are reaching the (jeneral Land Office almost daily, the uses of which have assumed a great im- portance within the past few years. This mineral is more or less pure carbon, and is met with im the oldest geological formations. According to recent investigations it is the remnant of the first vegetable organism of our globe, and is found in beds or imbedded masses in gneiss, granite and mica schists. The first mention of it, as used for pencils, was made by & Swiss naturatist of the sixteenth century. Scheele, in 1779, ascertained its chemical na- ture. The purest variety occurs in Turkinsk, im the Government ef Irkutsk, in Siberia, and formerly the purest variety was obtained from the Borowdale mines in Cumberland, England. ‘However, the value of graphite does not so much depend upon its purity as upon its grain and texture. For, pencils, only dense, fine-grained speci- mens ean be employed, while fer crucibies which are extensively used in the manufacture | Of steel, the loose mulmous and scaly-like kind is preferred. The former is only rarely met with. Graphite crueibies are, besides, employed in mmts for melting precious metals, for which Purpose they are considered greatly superior to the so-called Hessian crucible. The craci. bles of Passau in Bavaria have been celebrated trom the time of Agricola, the father of Metal- | Jurgy; they are made, however, of a more infe- | rior quality than formerly. The graphite of | Passau is imbedded im gneiss in proportions | | from 535 to 43 per cent. For the manufacture ot crucibles the mineral is reduced to a fine powder, mixed thoroughly ‘With one third or one half of its weight of clay | and stamped in forms and moderately heated until perfectlydry. This industry is largely carried on by the Patent Plambago Crucibie | Company in Battersea, near London, by which | st is imported from Ceylon. The consumption as so large that the price of the crude product as more than doubled within a few years. The largest crucible works in the United | Gallery. States belong to the suceessors of the well known inventor—Mr. Dixon, m New Jersey— specimens ef which may now be seen on exhi- Ditgu at the American Institute Fair in New ‘York, and in the mineral cabinet of the General Land Office. ‘With regard to the uses of graphite for pen- «ils, it is stated by Mr. Brodie, a French chemist, that its chemical nature will cease to | have the importance it used to bave. Mr. | Brodie has succeeded tn obtaiving, at a trifling | cust, chemically pure black lead from the most | umpure graphite. By bis method the plampago 2s obtained im such purity as to be formed into light flakes, wDich are capable of being blowa away by the slightest current of air Besides the above-mentioned uses, plumbago 3 employed for portadie chemical furnaces. mufiles, retorts, and tubes for chemists. Large | blocks of pure graphite are sold as bigh as 36) if per pound. Mixed with soft soap and lard. | oul, Or even of itself, when in a finely powdered state, it forms & valuable Inbricating material. | In galvanoplastics, graphite powder is em- ployed to cover the casts of plaster of paris in order to obtain metallic deposits. Recently the idea has been started by a French Chemist, that graphite cannot be considered merely as an alotropic state of carbon, but it must be re- gardedass new element. Pauli observed tne formation of this element during the prepara- ion of certain cyamogen compounds.
