EVENING STAR. Largest Circulation in the District | CROSBY 8, NOYES... ...0+.Bdlters WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY........-.SEPTEMBER 21, 1969, SF READING MATTER ON BVERY PAGE. SER OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELB- @BAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. ee NEW BUILDING MATERIALS. ‘The growing cost of building with the present materials used hes caused a pretty active ex- ercise of inventive genius to discover some mode of making artificial stone possessing the Properties of durable stone. Many or most of | these inventions have proved worthless on Detng tested. The artificial stone used at the Howard University, made from sand on the ground, seems, bo’ Probiem affirmauvely, sud it is, moreover, of an agreeabie color, waking it @ great improve. ment esthetically over the dreary red-brick, or the glaring white marble of stereotype use. Some of the stone blocks, hurriedly made and used im & green condition, proved defective in the hespital building connected with the Unt- Yersity, bat the material used in the main building seems to stand well, and to harden by exposu: ‘We see that an artficial stone made by a French inventor, M. Woignet, has come into extensive use in France. Though the discoy- ery was looted upon with distra: t first, its strength has been established in a way to satisfy the scruples of the French Govern. ment engineers, an¢ several important public Works have been constructed of the ne stone, which Bas received the name of beton- Cognet. Its asserted that it Bas a strength Superior to amy stratified rock, and equal to Sny of the harder rocks, except the very best | quality of granite. The difficulty im the way of marufactaring artefieial stone from sand pas been from the tact that sand camnot be compressed by ordi- nary means, and in a confined mass of sand Pressure cannot be transmitted. For example, if an ordinary gas or water Pipe be filled with sand, and a piston applied atone end, no amount of pressare can drive the sand through it, though the pipe may burst from the lateral pressure. Here, then, ‘Was the secret of failare. Materials of various Proportions had been tried, but they bad been poured into moulds, or frames, in masses; Pressure bad only affected them, as it were, on the surface, and the whole interior had been Jett with a honeycomb of interstices between the grains of sand, imperfectly filled with bydrate of lime, which, as the water evaporat. | ed, became larger. and finally so large as to jeave @ mere heap of dry sand and lime, in fact, 8 mortar ready to cramble. from its own weight, under the influence of the atmosphere. The problem now became this: Given the chem- ical constituents of any particalar stone, to combine there so that all air should be expelled from between the particles, and they should form a homozeneous muss. The easiest, cheapest. and quickest way to accomplish the desired end was found to be, by introdacing smaller quantities of the tare into the mould, and then to expel the air by pounding, Snd not by at equal pressure, as in the latter case the confined air would act as an elastic, Tesisting cushion, which would neutralize the | effect of the opera: ‘The process of manufacture is simply to mix the comstitutent parts in a cylinder with only enough water to make them cohere. Whea | thoroughly mixed, the material is placed small quantities im the moulds and pounded ‘With light rammers, additional quantities being constantly introduced until the monid is filled. wer, likely to solve the | ‘The plan for a World’s Fair. to be held im | this city im 1871, took such definite shape at | the meeting last night, and was upield by men of such financial weight, intelligesce, and | Dusinesa acuteness, as to impress ail present | with the belief that it was an achievement pos- sible to be done, and thatit must be done. The Ideas and suggestions thrown out wege all | | practical and to the point, and tbe entire action | of the meeting meant business. Mr. Metgerott | potnted out that the building, modeled upon that at Paris, need not be &n expensive one. Dr. Stansbury, who represented the United States at the London World’s Fair, ex- | pisined how the work was blocked out to | carry that enterpriese saccessfully through and to what extent the same plan cou'd be fol. lowed here.
