DEATH OF SENATOR FESSENDEN. | ‘The painful intelligence reaches us by the telegraph of the death of Senator Fessenden, of Maine. it bad been hoped that he had pass- | €d the crisis of his illness and would recover to | ‘ad and lead in the cils of the nation for comstitation, never vig- | been unable to carry him | through. Though his independent course upon the impeachment question and other matters bad | called upon him the denunciations of the ex. | treme men of bis party, mone probably doubted that he was governed by comsci tous convictions of duty in every act of bis Ifife, and all will admit that im Bis death we lose the most statesman-like | mind ofthe country. Mr. Fessenden was bora | ip Boscawen, New Hampshire, October 16th, 1806, and is consequently about 63 years of age He graduated at Bowdoin College in 1523: studied Iaw and was admitted to practise in Portland im 1827; was « member of the Maine Legisiature im 152 and re-elected | in 18%; was a representative in Congress from 1°41 to 1543, declining farther | Service; was again in the State Legislature in | 1815 and 1816, and re-elected in 1853 and 195i: and was elected a Senaior in Congress for six | years from March, 1253, serving as a member | of the Committee on Finance; and in 1259 was Te-elected for the term of six years, serving as chairman of the Committee on Pinance, on the | Library Committee, and also asa Regent of the ‘Smuthsonian Institution. He was also chair- man of the Special Joint Committee on Re. | MS%t construction. He was a member in 1832 | Of the Convention which nominated Heury Clsy tor President, and also of the Con- | ventions that nominated Generals Taylor And Scott. During the summer of 1358, the degree of L. L. D., was conferred upon him by | Bowdotm College. He was also s 8 member of | the Peace Congressof 161. In July,1834, he was appointed by President Lincoln Secretary of the Treasury, in place of S. P. Chase resigned: and soon afterwards received from Harvard | University the degree of L. LD. In 1361, he | Was re-elected a Senator in Uongress for the yerm commencing in 1865 and ending in 18: ‘He resigned bis seat in the Cabinet, March 4. | 1895, and entering upon his new Senatorial | term was again placed at the head of the Finance Committee, which arduous and re- sponsible position he filled with great ability, entil bis failing health compelied his with: drawal from it. ma WAKING UP. The Boi of Virginia seem to thinks it is about time to give up political abstractions and enter upon the work of business recon. Struction. 1t really looks now as if a proper railroad system will be put in operation in that State, by means of which Richmoud and Norfotk will assume the business proportions they are fairly entitled to; and the rich but Undeveloped portions of the State now having no access to markets will be opened up. The Norfolk and Great Western Railroad Com. pany and the Virginia Internationai Land Company have lately entered into a con- tract by which the iatter company engages to find purchasers and settlers for all the sur- | plus lands lying along the projected railroad that may be conveyed to its company in sub- seription for stock.
