The fif- teen millions dollars required for pensions, to- gether with the necessary expenditures, will consume about all of the receipts for the month, leaving the debt about the same. ACTING SECRETARY RICHARDSON, desirous of reducing the expenses of collecting the reve- nue, and believing that the oilice of Assistant Collector of Customs at Jersey City is not actually necessary for the interests of the public service, will noufy the incumbent of that po- sition that his resignation will be accepted. THE REDUCTION of the clerical force in th» Treasury Department and various bureaps thereof since Secretary Boutwell took charge of the Department, bas resulted in a saving of about $50,000 per month in salaries alone. It is expected that by the time the work of re- duction in that Department shall be completed, at least $1,000,000 per annum will be saved from salaries.
