WOMAN SUFFRAGE. Singularly enough the movement for ‘Women’s rights which in this couatry is seldom spoken er written of by persons not actively engaged in the crusade, except in terms of de- Preciation, ridicule or sarcasm, or worse still, Im & sort of bantering aif tolerant, half patronizing way, receives in Eagiaad most esruest and serious consideration by the press And all classes of the psople, and many of the | most powerful and brilliant minds in the United Kimgdom are enlisted in the cause. That the English “girl of the period” will beallowed 20 vote, before her American sister 1s eafraa. tle aoubt, Bat way is it? Are we English women more in earnest thaa ours; is there @ greater necessity for reform there than here; js it the general indifference ot the male or the female Americaa that is the bane of the movement here; or are our gentle Norosisters overdoing it by mixing up with the pure and simple question of the right of suff. Tage such side issues as the right to wear breeches, the right to carry pistols, the right to «see life” from the masculine standpoint, the Tight to write naughty things if they want to, and various other rights not pertinent to the asin issue? That the advocates of the ovement here are as much in earnest as those on the other side of the Atlantic we may take for granted, although we believe that women have been id are treated better im this country than they are there. It cannot be denied that a large major- ity of Americans of both sexes take bat little Interest in the subject as yet, and that the cause is not making the progress which might be ex- Pected, but this, we think, is owiag in a great measure to the reason we have suggested, that the main question is too much hampered with side issues, whic lay it open to ridicule. The organs of the movement here are ably con- Gucted, but the best of them all, Tie Revolution, ts open to this objection, By its boldness in grappling with the social evil and other sub- Jects tabooed in most families, it frightens off many timid sisters who might otherwise be persuaded to take their stand for the ballot, it that was all; while by advocating dress reform And trotting out other pet hobbies, it ieadsa great many careless readers to have very con- tused ideas of «what these women’s rights folks are driving at.” Thus it is that the picture presented to the mind's eye of most people is not that ofa lady in her ordinary attire walk- ing quietly to the polling place and perform- ing the simple duty of depositing her ballot, ‘With as little inconvenience as she would en- dure from contact with the unwashed in a crowded market house or street car. On the contrary, they seem to see mothers, wives, and sisters im Bloomer continuations, swag- gering to the oils, pistol, im hand, pre Pared te do or die. Hence the covert seers and open ridicule which the ad- Yoeates of reform at every step, and deter public men from injuring their chances for po- Aitical preterment, by espousing a cause, which although based on principles of justice, is joaded down with so much thgt 1s extraneous ‘Sud irrelevant, As we have intimated, they manage it beter in England. While the late convention at Saratoga was attended by just ‘the same set of enthusiasts that have figured before the public all along, and while it did uot attract much attention among outsiders, except that it was the occasion of imnamerable Bewspaper squibs, the contemporaneous con- Yertion of the “London Society for Woman's Suffrage” was one of the most imposing politi- cal demonstrations of the times. Among those ‘who participated in the proceedings were Mrs. P. A. Taylor, (who presided,) Mrs. Faw- cett, (wife of the member from Brighton,) J.S. Mill, Lord Houghton, Mr. James Stans- feld, M. P.; Sir. W. Dilke, M. P.; Mr. M’La- ren, M. P.; Mr. P. A. Taylor, M. P ; Professor Fawcett, M. P.; Rev. Charles and Mrs. Kings- ley, Mr. John Morley, Professor Masson, Mr. Boyd Kinnear, Mr. Thomas Hare, Sir W. Law- son, M.P.; Mr. Price, M. P.; Sir D. Wedder- burn, M.P.; Mr. Winterbotham, M. P.; Mr. James Haywood, the Hon. Auberon Herbert, MM. Arles Dufour, M. Louis Blanc, Herr Karl Blind, and other distinguished people. Mr. Jobn Stuart Mull was the principal speaker He said that the higher education of ‘women, And their political emancipation, were sure te go forward together. The great practical distinction between those who could pro- tect themselves and those who were at the mercy of others was the political franchise. ‘The suffrage was the turning point in women’s cause—that alone would imsure them an equal bearing and fair play. With it they could not be denied any just right, or excluded from any iair advantage. He concluded by moving, “That this society declares its strong convic- teu that itisin the bighest degree unjust and impolitic to make sex the ground of exclusion from the exercise of political rights.” This resolu‘ion was adopted, as was another sec- ended by Lord Houghten, “That this society pledges itself to use every lawful means to obtain the extension of the franchise to women, Sind it therefore considers that a bill for that Purpose should be introduced into Parliament as early @s possible in the ensaing session.” That Parliament will give due consideration to tae recommendations of such an assembiage cf representative men and women there is no doubt. ————____. The Baltimore Gazette (Democratic) referring to the statement last published of the condition of the Treasury ‘and the reduction of the public debt, says, with great frankness :—«We must Bot blind ourselves to the important fact tha: the extraordinary resources of this nation have Rot only carried it successfully through a mos; critical period, but have uleo enabled it to fund an immense debt, and eyen to reduce its out. standing liabilities, at a period when, in the eyes of many, it was believed to be staggering ender a load which would eventually crush it? ——____ Tax National Lason Untow.—Notice has been given that the third anaual session of the ational Labor Union will be neld in Phijs- deiphia on the 16th of August. « All trades Unions, all lsbor erganizations of every xd, 1 every part of the country—whether com.
