CROSBY 8. NOYES..........-Editere WASHINGTON OITY: SATURDAY...........---+ JUNE 19, 1969. S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGS. SEB OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELE- @RAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. Fem TSE AccOMMODATION OF PERSOXS leaving the city during the summer months «bey cam Baye Tu# Stak mailed to their Sddress, by ordering the same at the office, for ivy cents per week, for one week or more. Tax PRietess’ DirriccttTy.—To-night the Colambia Typographical Union will take up the question of the colored printer Douglass, and & lively contest is anticipated. The meet- ing Will be beid at Oad Fellows’ Hall, 7b street, the old headquarters of the society, at | the Council chamber. not being capacious enough for this mustering of the claus on this exciting occasion. The committee having the | matter in charge will report upon the que-tion of the eligibility of Douglass for mempbersh:p, | 4nd rumor has it that the majority of the committee will report im bis favor. Then Will come the tug of war. It needs a two- thirds yote to admit to membership, but a majority can grant permission for a printer to work. and should Douglass not be ad mitted to membership it is possible that a majority may be obtained to give him a Fermit to work at the Goverament office outside of membership. done the difficulty may possibly be tided over ‘Without an cpen collision between the Society snd the Government office, but should the down-town hands, with those who side with them at the Government office, succeed in getting control of the matier, reject Douglass and refuse him a permit, then there will pe “lively times im the Jersies.” As Superinten- dent Clapp will not dismiss Dougiass in any event, a course of action,by the Union such as isst indicated would seem to certainly involve 3 trial of strength between the Printer’s Unions and the Government office. ‘Tas Deata or Hexry J. RAYMoND.—We find in the New York papers the following additions! particulars of the death of Mr. Ray- mond. Thursday afternoon he went to Green. ‘wood with bis daughter to select alot for his son, whe died in April. He arrived at the Times office about six p. m., stayed about fif- | teem minutes, and went home with bis daughter. At dinner he complained of being very tired, but otherwise was as well as usual. Later in the evening he attended a meeting ofa Repat- licam clup of which be was member. At Il o'clock be returned home, in company with | Several friends, who left him at his door abour midnight. He entered the house aed locked the door, and nothing further was known of him until three o'clock next morning, when he was found lying insemsible im the hall. He was immediately carried to bis room and placed om a bed, where he remained con scious for two hours, and then died. His health bad not been strong for many months; but no one bad expected this sudden close of his career. The New York papers have very full obiturary notices ot Mr. Raymond. The N mania for new railroads raging extensively at present all over the country, estimates that there are now building, and in various stages of completion, one thousand miles ot new road New York State, im addition to the thirty. five hundred miies already in operation. About nine Bundred miles of new road are in Progress im the New England States. It noticeable, also, that the manner of building railroads has very much changed in the las; | few years. Private capital is draw to & very limited extent, and states furnish the funds. Recent legislation in New Yor very much facilttates the bonding of towns im sid of railroad enterprises, and in Maine the same factlities are affored for town- sbip and cotnty guarantees to ald in the cou- struction of railroads. i Ax English parliamentary commission is now taking evidence about elections. and near. ly every witness assures the members that the ballot is the best check on corruption and ua- due imftuence at the polls. The, commission tmeliue to the same opinion, and purpose to bave evidence of the mode pursued im the United States and in various European coun- tries. One or two Englishmen of politicai ex- perience were allowed special opportanities St the late Paris elections to see all the details by which the votes were taken, and these will be described to the commutte. The methods in upon Italy, Belgium, &c., will also be explained, and | out of it all is expected to come in course of hve years an mmproved method of managing elecuets for Parliament, of which the ballot will be one feature. ple of Georgetown should bear in n fact that the wanin toa Star, “by authority,” publishes the | the Corpora. eorgetow, althou, the con-ideration generous” Councils by refusing te take cog- pizsice of the death of Samuel Cropl« tor nearly fifty vears bas been identi the town. Why is this! — Why lieso stupidly when the Star, which visits nearly every family in Georgetown, con- timed extended notices of the death and fumeral of Mr. Cropley in three successive ssues,on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Tnars- day. of ther late ‘The srrest of the Cuban Junta, is the occasion of not a little indignation in some of the eensa- on journals against Uncle San.
