Two-thirds ot this sum was due on cable telegrams concerning the Alaska purchase Mrs. De. Waiker, to the totzl excinusion of every other woman, however gitted or pretty.” THE Republican after literatiy making up its news for eo many months from the Star, is naturally surprised that it has been able to furnish a five line local item worth our bagging. Now it the Republican would do the fair thing it Would furnish a news item occasionally in its columns for the benefit of its contempo- aries. But it is too sour and unhappy over its discomfitments to do the genteel in that way. BRILLIANT MARRIAGE AT FORTRESS Mon- RBOR.—A brilliant and fashionable wedding took place Wednesday afternoor in the Epis- copal Church inside Fortress Monroe, Va. Captain Albion Howe, of the Fourth United States artillery being united in marriage to Mits Sallie Barry, daughter of Major General W. F. Barry, commanding the artillery school- The attendance of distinguished visitors was very large, among them being General Sherman and staff. accompanied by Mrs. Hamilton Fish, Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Field aad des ghter, and & number of others who arrived there the day previous on tne Tallapoosa in order to be pres- entattheceremony. The navy was well rep- rerented; Commodore Kilty and the officers of the Norfolk Navy Yard, Commander Uhand_ ler, of the Tallapcoza, ang a number cf officer, from the monitor Saugus being present, all in fulldress, Bishop Johns, of Richmond, as- sisted by the Rev. Dr. Cheevers, Post @naplain, performed the marrirge service, after which the bride and groom repaired to the mansion oceupied by the Generel, where they received their friends. The bride was attired ina white silk dress, trimmed with point lace, and orm.- Mented with pearls, anda rich lace veil fasten- ed with a large dimond pin. The bridesmaids were four in number: Miss Libbey anc Miss Kate Barry, sisters of the bride; Miss McKaight, of Buffalo, and a young isdy from Exrope. They were atiired in white and looked very Bandsome. The groomsmen were Major J. P. Sanger, M-jor J. B. Campbell, Lientenant A. S. Adams and Lieutenant W. W. Topkins, and Were all in fall dress uniforms. DESTRUCTION oF CURRENCY PRINTING PLATEs—THESTERL PLATES MELTED Dows. An INTERESTING SCENE.—The Secretary of the ‘Treasury having ordered the destruction of the plates, dies, &c., frem which the currency bas heretofore been printed in the Treasury build- ing, the work was commenced about ten days ago, when all the electrotype end stereotype and copper plates were melted down in the Treasury building. The steel pilates, however ‘were too much (to use the phrase,) for the Treasury furnaces, so the committee appointed by the Secretary of Treasury to superintend the affair, concluded te remove them to the Navy Yard, there to be melted dowa. The Plates thus destroyed have printed over eight billions of dollars. The committee having the matter in charge ‘were as follows: Senator Thayer, of Nebraska, and ex-Congressman G. A. Halsey, of New Jersey, on the part of Congress; Mr. S. Guth- Tie of the Treasurer’s office, Mr. L. D. Moore of the Registe's office, and Mr. Parley Hame mond of the Secretary’s office, on the part of te Treasury Department; and Mr. A.S, Pratts of this city, formerly a ¢lerk im the Treasury Department, on the part of the people of the United States. The committee have been at work since Monday morning last, examining: Tecording, and packing the plates, rolls, dies, and bed pieces, numbering im al) 2,900, packed in forty boxes, weighing altogether about 16,000 pounds. Each box was securely tastened with iron bands,and bore three seals, each respect- ively of the Treasurer and Register of the ‘Treasury, and Jay Uooke & Co., bankers. The committee naving in charge the boxes, which were contained in four wagons, arrived atthe Navy Yard at 11 o’clock, and proceeded direct to the iron foundry, wnere the master mechanicin eburge, Mr. Wm. Bland, had the large furnace already prepafed for the pur- pose. The boxes were them, 1m presence of the committee and some of the officers of the yard, who afforded every facility, unloaded, on Qeelevator, dnd thrown into the fu unbroken, & strict tally being kept all the while by a2 member of the committees. Tne forty boxes were all put into the farnace by half-past twelve o’clock, when the doors were cloned and the draft.turned on. While the melting process was gomg on, ample Preparations were made in ease of act cident, when the fiery stream was let forth. Hose and pipes were connected with ‘water-plugs near by aud brought to the doors of the shop for ure at@ momemt’s notice. A few minutes after | o’clock there were indica- tions that the mass was being melted and about balf past one the plates, dies, &c., which had prigted so many milliops of dollars came out of the farnace a biazing, bat sluggish stream, and were soon cold lumps.of steel. Just before reaching @ly- mont we passed the steamer Wawaset with an excursion party, the band of which struck up Hail to the Chief” as the Tallapoosa passed, the President's flag being displayed from the masthead. Atdusk we were. few miles below Glymont, and shortly thereafter supper was announced, when the guests proceeded te the dining saloon, where a bounteous table was spread. Captain Chandler ocenpied the tead of the table, with the President at the ether end. After supper the deck was cleared and a brilliant hop took place, Col. Audenrerd lead- ing off with Mrs. Grant, and Gen. Micbler with Miss Nellie Grant. The officers of the ‘Tallapoosa were invited, and greatly centrib- uted to the pleasure of the evening. After the hop, the party promenaded the decks until near midnight. when toey retired— Mrs. Grant and Mise Nellie occupying one of the large state rooms, the President and Master Jesse another. The ladies were ail assigned to state rooms in the lower cabin, and the gentle- men to hammocks and cots in the upper saloon About one o’clock we reached Biackistone’s Island, and shortly after passed Piney Point. At three o'clock we reached Point Lookou ena turned up the Chesapeake Bay. The Guests rose about eeven o'clock, and breakfast ‘was served at eight. Upon nearing the wharf at Annapolis the President was received with a salute from the ships Savanrab. Macedonian and Santee. At eleven o'clock a dress pa- rade of midshipmen took place, after which Judge Humphreys, of Alabama, of the Board of Visitors, delivered the address to the gradu- ating class. The diplomas were then deliy- ered to the graduates by President Grant, each midshipman stepping to the front as his name was called by Admiral Porter. The gradu- ating class for this year numbers seventy-eight members, and the five who carry off the honors are—Charles P. Perkins, Mass ; Henry M. M. Richards, Penn.; Louis E. Bixler, Penn.; Clin- ton K. Curtis, West Va.; and William P, Pot- ter, N.Y. Alter dress parade the middies were dis. missed. The distribution of diplomas aad parade took plage immediately in tront of the Academy buildings. There were two hundred And fitty in the battalion formed, with Spencer carbines, and dressed in white pants, dark Diue jacket, and white caps. The companies Were under command of Captains Briggs, Wiley, Birney and Buckmgham, and were exercised in the manual of arms by Lieut. Commander S. P. Gillette, to the delight of all visitors, Two steamers will be down from Baltimore this evening with visitors. Preparations are now being .made for the Doat race, whieh takes place at 4 p.m. The race is over @ three mile course. The boats ‘Will start from the sea-wall on the Severn, im. mediately in the rear of the recitation hall. The President and Mrs. Grant, and the Board of Visitors, will go ont in the steam launen to Witness therace. Boats are ready atthe wharves totake ont the guests. The practice ships are gaily dressed, and the Academy grounds are beautifully decorated. To-night they will be brilliantly illuminated by thousands of Ian- terns suspended from the trees. A promenade concert by the Academy band is now in pro- gress, The graduating class will appear in their uniforms at the ball to-night. Annapolis is crowded with visitors, and Many are unable to obtain accommodations.
