EVENING STAR. | Largest Circulation in the Distriet CROSBY S. NOYES......,...Editers WASHINGTON OITY: MONDAY... +» MAY 17, 1869. S7 READING MATTER ON EVERY PAGE. FEB OUTSIDE FOR INTERESTING TELBE- ©EAPHIC AND OTHER MATTER. OUS EDUCA- ‘The school authorities of Washington, by a judicious course for a series of years, carefally excluding anything Ike sectarianism from the Public Schools, have won for our school sys- iem the confidence of all denominations. results of this course have beem so beneficent here that we trust the hented efforts that are now beirg made elsewhere by religious parti- a8 to turn the public schools of the country ato proselyting institutions on this side or that, vw itl have no echoes from this quarter. In some ot the Nortnern 5 Protestant religionists are strennously de- yanding that State Governments shall provids Zor the reading of the Bible in the Pablic Schools. On the other hand, the Catholic Yashop Spalding, of Baltimore, seems disposed io Make & crusade against the secular education ©f our school system. and to desire that Uatholic children shall zo oaly to schools where the denets of Catholicism are taught. It is easy to see that if either side carry their point, the unity and usefulness of our uational system of public schools will be destroyed. That system ‘bas & great and peculiar mission of its own to perform im maintaining our free institutions. ‘The youth of the country must he instructed ‘f our torm of government is to be sus- tained. its only foundation is the intelli- ence of the mass of the people. The sys- tem of education needed 1s one that shall be so free and tolerant as to bring all the Dildren of the country under its influences. The duty of religious instruction to every | Bat this hild is conceded by all. struction + properly the work of the parent, of the Si i day School, and of the Church. The day- school is not the proper place for instruction of this responsible and delicate nature. It must necessarily be slurred over for waut of time, even were the teacher otherwise competent for the work; and both the reading of the scriptures and the religio teaching must necessarily be degraded into a monotonous and irksome task, well calculated io give the pupil a distaste for religious mat- | ters that be may not be able to overcome for the remainder of his life. The Rev. Wm. Adams.of New York, ins | “ f organi: sermon recently preached on this subject, a r urges with clearness this point, that it is not properly the business of a public school to zeach any form of religious belief. It may, in- deed, teach the existence of God, and our gene- ral obligations to Him, as the foundation of all Jaw and all morality, and as that which gives sanction to an osth; but as to a specific creed, he bolds that it is not the business of such a school to teach religion any more than it 1s the business of & bank oF railroad corporation. ‘The public schools are established at public expense. Fortheir support all are taxed alike, and their doors are open to the children of all—Epi-copalians and Presbyterians, Catho- Hes and Protestant and Jew. Receiving chil- dren from such different sources, what is the business of the common school! To teach them the Catechism, or any form of faith? By mo Means, but to teach them to read, write, and spell, and those rudiments of knowledge which jtis meceesaty for them to possess in order to Ait them to he intelligent eitizens—fit to exercise ihe rignts of freemen.
