G., on duty in the office of the Secretary of War for some years past, having ben relieved will retire about the first of June, and be suc- ceeded by Brevet Colonel O. A. Mack. REORGANIZATION OF THE SPECIAL Mart SuRvicw.—The Postmaster General has com- pletely reorganized this important branch of the postal service. The country has ry Givided into six divisions, and these are sub. divided into districts. The first divisien bas two distriets, the third, fourth, and fifth three each, and the sixth six. Each division has a chief officer styled Assistant Superintendents Railway Mail Service, whose salary is about $3,400, and also a Special Agent to investigate mail depredations. Each districthas an agen; called Post Office Inspector, There are also several “agents at large.” The Superinten- dents are responsible for postal ‘airs over the whole of thetr divisions. The orginization of the divisions, and the appointments in them are as follows: First Division —The New England states. Superinterdent Railway Service, Thomas P. Cheney, New Ham pehire; Post Office Inspec- tors, ist dis.rnt, W. Hammeti:, Maine; 2d, B. H. Camp, Connecticut: Mail Depredations, R. R. Wade, Massachusatts. Secon Diviston.— New York, Peansylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, and the Eastern Shore of Virginie. Third D:vi.ion—Virginia (excluding Eastern Shore,) Nortt Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Superintendent Railway C. L. French, Virginia. Inspectors: ist districi, poe) BaE Rsk wher In PURSUIT oF Orric’ Uxves Dirriccc- T1ne.—Mrs. Dr. Major M ry E Walker is oa way and another a perfect wind-fall for report- ers She used tobe strong on woman's rights and ‘Woman's wrongs, dress reforms, and that sort of sensational thing, and i1 tha: way supplied the raw material tor a good many spicy pata- graphs. Latterly, however, ste bas given her mind to office hunting; and in her new role she bids fair to be as useful to the guild as in the old. Im faci, in the way of furnishing items she bas so far been more successfai than in office An that line she basn’t been a sucer ss to say, in a financial point of yew. Sue usuatly bas pretty good luck in getting audi- ence with the dignitaries, and in securing a sort of half-abstract: 4 attention and a ind of half way promise that something shal! be done when the right time comes i oamd; bait sone how her name does’. ze! oa the pay roll, and she deesn’t get the long-coveted chaace to cross her pantaleoned extremities urder the Government mahogany. Her first e.or: wr3 made a coaple of weeks ago, when she threw out ber skirmishers aca made a httle raid on the Internal Keveane o- fice. Commissioner Delano received Ber a little more pleasantly than he would bave greeted a represrntativeof the whisky r.ng; da! she didn’t “quarter on the enemy” to any gteat extent in that case. In his effort to get rid of the irrepressible bloomer, he asked her why she didn’t get married? She bravely responded that “she would accept noold man, and that no young man would have her.” After a little more ineffectual firing, Mr. Delano turned her over to Deputy Commissioner Dougiass, who negotiated an armistice. Out of this came the tollowing correspondence : N Treascry Dei erm - Office Interoal Revenue, Washington, Blay 6, 1839.— William P. Shecrwan, Ene» Supervisor of Ofice—Sir: 1 am informed by Mrs. Dr. Walker, an applicant for a clerkship in this Bureau, that she has been promised @ position as first class clerk in the event ofa discharge of acierk upon the ground of his being the poorest in theservice. Can you designate such a person! Respectfally, - Doueiass, Deputy Commissioner. J. certatmty who is the poorest clerk 1 vice would be almost as troublesome and time- consumirg as would be the attempt to find out who is the “wickedest man in New York.” I am notable to designate the person in either case. W. P. Sumaeman, General Supervisor, &c. Nothing daunted by the strategy which de- feated her efforts at the Internal Revenue office, the gallant Major drew up her forces in tront of the Post Uffice Department, and, after trying the range of her guns on General Banks, a manded the surrender of that citadel. Com- mander Creswell being & fail “General,” (in the Post Office serviee,) had heard that sum- mons before, and declined to haul down his fiag. He was willing, however, to receive a deputation from the invading forces. The Mayor accordingly hung out her cambric hand. kerchief as a flag of truce, and was escort ito the headquarters of the beieged army. Here the little grey-eyed woman of destiny sought to secure by negotiation what sbe had .ailed to carry by force of arms. First she coaxed, and then she argued, and next she plead, and after- wards she begged, and finally she insisted that she should have at lerst comfortable quar ors in that stronghold, if not command of one of its battalions. She even scoldr4, we hear. All for nix, however. The P.G. M.'s blue eyes looked sympathetic, but bis heart was stony. The interview, which opened plersantly enough, closed in a storm; and the invading forces (somewhat scattered and disordered.and & good deal disgusted.) were withdrawn for a vigorous campaign in some other and more promising quarter. On Tuesday morning last, the guns of the bes*zing army were once more placrd in po- sition before the Treasury, with ths view ot capturing a little forage from the Internal Rev- enue office, im case it couldn't secure a perma- ment lodgment within the solid walls of that fortress. A somewhat angry summons from the herald’s bugle brought to the rampar’s So- licitor Smith, who ceemed to be in command of the upper sections of the northeast tower, in the absence of Commissioner Delano. After some parleying, the leaders of the opposing forces concluded that they would edopt the ola Ho- ratii-Currti: plan to @yoid the unan >¢ssary spilling of blood, and decide the tate of the day by @ single-banded comtit. This suited the Major, and (toadoptanr val figure) she «sailed in.” New Smith, being square of -build, swartby of complexion, and imperturbabie of countenance, is a tolerably difficult pesition to capture. He can stand @ good deal of bitter- ing without wasting much ammanition in re- turn. In other words, he listens well, but r+ is depressingly non-commitial in the way of Promises, or even of indications. If the Doc- tor impressed him at once she didn’t know it. It was clearly a case for sieze operations. There was no chance for storm or assault, so siege was laid accordingly. Notwithstanding her manly attire and martial bearing, she coulén’t, for want of liberaland apprec‘ative legislation in that direction, bring her fistdown on the table and demand an office, for that she bad voted the straight Republican ticket for years, had carried torches, and been a ‘boy in blue” in good standing, hed converted the wavering, and bad hauled the sick and lame to the polls for many an election. All this tne law and foolish custom forbade. Despit> her outward semblance, she was obliged. after «ll, to rely in her extremity on the usual exp-di- ents and ammanition of her original sex. Ohief of these, and particularly in a case of forlorn hope, are Tears When everything else fail: 4. tears came; sparingly at first, jus: suffaci the eye in the old captivating w: an urresistible trickle down the cheek: finally, an uncontrolisble stream, calling for vigorous mopping; but w.thout avail.
