Remem- bering bis jon mot on the Impeachment trial the Government perhaps send him on this (to his friends) much regretted mission, so that he may not altogether lose the taculty of «pay- ing” through misuse. IMPORTANT PATENT DgcIsion.—In the case of Jason Crane, recently betore the Commis- sioner of Patents, on application for a patent for design for boxes for ladies’ furs, the Com- missioner decided that such things could be patented and allowed the claim of the appli- cant. There area large number of various trifling articles in the market, for which here- tofore patents could not be granted, as it was ‘held that there was no mechanical invention in them and not enough novelty to entitle the inventor to @ patent, but under this decision, Bo doubt, a large number of such articles will be patented. TgeRRitt, of Indiana, was yes- terday appointed Third Assistant Postmaster General, in lieu of Colonel A, H. Markland, nominated to the Senate some time azo, to take the place of A.N. Zevely, the present incum- bent. The capabie manner im which General Terril! discharged the responsible and trying duties of Adjutant General of the State of Inai- ana, under Governor Morton, during the war, is an earnest of what he can do in his new jon, aud we look forward with confidence to @ most successful admiuisiration of the office. —Nothwithstandinz these encouraging pros. pects, it must be a matter of general regret that the exigencies of politics wouid seem to re- quire the displacement of so estimable a gen- Ueman and so competent an officer as Mr. Zevely. Having given the best years of his life tothe public service, and having grown up so &8 to be almost am integral part of the Post Office Department, that gentleman now retires from it older in years, feebler in health. and no richer in pocket than when he entered it. He takes with bim, however, that which 1s of more real worth thaa riches, though possibly not so readily turned to merchantable account— the respect and good wishes of all who know him personally or who have bad to do with bam officially.
